Johann Shmidt, later known as the Red Skull, was born to Hermann and Martha Shmidt in a small German village. His mother died giving birth to him, and his father, overcome by grief and rage, attempted to drown the newborn before committing suicide the next day. Raised in an orphanage, Johann’s childhood was defined by neglect and violence. At seven years old he ran away, surviving on the streets as a thief and beggar. As a young man he worked for a Jewish shopkeeper whose daughter, Esther, showed him kindness. When she rejected his attempt to force himself on her, he murdered her in a fit of rage and fled, beginning his life as a killer.

Years later, Shmidt found work as a bellhop at a Berlin hotel during Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. During a visit from Hitler himself, the dictator noticed Shmidt’s hatred and cruelty. Amused, Hitler took him under his wing and declared that he would make Shmidt the perfect Nazi. Personally trained by Hitler, Shmidt became the Red Skull, wearing a crimson mask as a symbol of fear and authority. Answerable only to Hitler, he was assigned missions of sabotage, terror, and assassination across Europe and the United States. It was during this time that the U.S. created Captain America, who became the Red Skull’s primary enemy.

Throughout the war, the Red Skull commanded Nazi armies, orchestrated mass executions, and looted entire cities. Hitler granted him unlimited resources and access to advanced weapons, including mind-control devices, space-warping technology, and experimental energy weapons. Despite his service, the Skull plotted to surpass Hitler, eliminating several of his advisers and becoming second only to him in power. He sent Baron Wolfgang von Strucker to Japan to expand Nazi influence in Asia, though Strucker later defected and formed HYDRA. As the war neared its end, Hitler approved the Skull’s plan to construct five massive war machines called the Sleepers, designed to destroy the world if Germany fell.

In the final days of the war, Captain America and Bucky fought the Red Skull in Berlin. During their battle, the Skull attempted to use a grenade against his foe but was buried alive when Allied bombs struck his bunker. The explosion released experimental gas that placed him in suspended animation while his body healed. Decades later, the organization THEM, secretly controlled by HYDRA, discovered and revived him. Shmidt quickly betrayed THEM, stealing the Cosmic Cube from AIM and using it to resume his plans for global domination.

After Hitler’s death, the Red Skull viewed himself as the rightful ruler of the world. He repeatedly clashed with Captain America, using the Cosmic Cube, HYDRA remnants, and his army of Exiles to attempt conquest. During this period, he fathered a daughter on Exile Island, who he raised artificially to adulthood and named Mother Superior. For a time he allied with a clone of Hitler known as the Hate-Monger before betraying him and trapping his mind in a false Cosmic Cube.

The Red Skull eventually began aging rapidly due to the reversal of the gas’s effects. Determined to die alongside his enemy, he poisoned both himself and Captain America, forcing a final duel. Captain America triumphed, and the Skull died of old age. His mind, however, was secretly preserved by Arnim Zola and implanted into a clone of Steve Rogers. Revived in this new body, the Skull abandoned open Nazism, instead plotting to destroy America from within. He created and funded extremist organizations such as ULTIMATUM, the Watchdogs, the Resistants, and the Scourge of the Underworld. From within the U.S. government, he manipulated the Commission on Superhuman Activities, arranging for John Walker to replace Steve Rogers as Captain America and attempting to destroy both men through psychological warfare. After exposure to his own Dust of Death compound, his cloned face was burned into a permanent red skull-like visage.

He joined the Acts of Vengeance conspiracy but was captured and buried alive by Magneto, who sought retribution for his role in the Holocaust. Rescued by Crossbones, the Skull returned to power, waged a drug war against the Kingpin, and was later captured and tried in Germany for war crimes before escaping. He continued to operate in secret, forming alliances with figures such as Viper and Superia. When both he and Captain America began to suffer paralysis from the Super-Soldier formula, he took a cure meant for his rival and forced a transfusion to restore him.

Later, he and Captain America were forced to battle a Nazi cult wielding a Cosmic Cube containing Hitler’s consciousness. The Skull tried to use the Cube to rule the world but was defeated when Captain America destroyed the device. Trapped in a nightmare dimension, the Skull eventually escaped with limited reality-warping powers, allying with Korvac and attempting to reshape the Earth to fit his ideology. Korvac ultimately stripped him of his power and banished him back to Earth.

Under the alias Dell Rusk, the Red Skull infiltrated the U.S. government and became Secretary of Defense, developing biological weapons before being exposed and defeated by the Avengers. He later reemerged with a new Cosmic Cube project but was assassinated by the Winter Soldier under orders from Aleksander Lukin. The Skull’s consciousness transferred into Lukin’s body, and the two minds battled for control. During this time, he created a new Master Man army, unleashed a Sleeper robot on London, and manipulated political and economic chaos to divide America during the Superhuman Civil War.

Following Captain America’s assassination, orchestrated by the Skull through Crossbones and Doctor Faustus, Shmidt faked his own death and continued manipulating world events. He attempted to possess Sharon Carter’s unborn child, believing it to be the offspring of Steve Rogers, but his plans failed when his daughter Sin interfered and Sharon rebelled. Zola transferred his consciousness into a robotic body, allowing him to survive.

He later revealed that Steve Rogers’ body was trapped in time and sought to transfer his mind into it, intending to rule as Captain America. Sharon Carter stopped him, and the Skull died after a battle with the Avengers. Yet one of his clones, activated after the Avengers vs. X-Men conflict, awakened and began a campaign against mutants, forming the S-Men and stealing Professor Charles Xavier’s brain to gain telepathic powers. After being killed, he was resurrected by Selene and rebuilt his criminal empire, becoming a target for the Thunderbolts.

Appearance: Red Skul's head is entirely red, shaped like a human skull with smooth bone-like texture and deep black shadowing in the hollows of the eyes, nose, and cheek structure. The skull’s surface has glossy highlights that emphasize the curvature of the cranium, and the edges around the jaw and temple are sharply defined. His eyes are red. He wears a high-collared, black leather jacket, its seams creased and taut around his chest and arms. The jacket is secured with a belt across his waist, the buckle metallic and circular. A small skull-shaped pin decorates his collar. A red stripe runs down his chest beneath the jacket, partially covered by the lapel. His pants are dark and uniform in tone, made of the same dense, reinforced material as the jacket, and tucked into knee-high black boots polished to a low shine. On his right hip is a holster made from black leather, its flap strapped securely shut, and a combat knife with a skull detail at the hilt hangs from his belt on the opposite side. He wears black gloves with reinforced stitching.

Personality: Johann Shmidt, the Red Skull, is defined by absolute control, calculated hatred, and an unrelenting drive for domination. Shaped by a lifetime of cruelty and humiliation, he views compassion as weakness and strength as the only truth. Cold, methodical, and manipulative, he uses ideology, science, and fear as instruments of power, aligning with no cause except his own ambition. Even in moments of apparent calm, his mind is ruled by rage and obsession, especially toward Captain America, whom he sees as the embodiment of ideals he loathes. Every defeat only sharpens his resolve, and every scheme, no matter how monstrous, is executed with precision and purpose.

The Red Skull’s longevity is maintained through mind transference, granting him a form of immortality. His consciousness can be transferred into new bodies, allowing him to survive the destruction of his previous forms. This process has enabled him to outlive his original body several times, continuing his existence through cloning, advanced technology, and psionic means.

Despite his lack of formal education, Johann Shmidt possesses genius-level intellect. His intelligence spans numerous disciplines including engineering, military tactics, political science, psychology, philosophy, chemistry, and physics. He is recognized as a master strategist, skilled in both military and subversive operations, and capable of manipulating nations through intricate, long-term planning. His ability to read opponents, anticipate movements, and adapt to any battlefield or political situation has made him one of the most dangerous tacticians in history.

The Red Skull is also a formidable hand-to-hand combatant. He has been trained extensively in unarmed combat and is proficient enough to defeat elite fighters such as Black Widow and U.S. Agent. He is an accomplished fencer and a precise marksman with most firearms, preferring efficiency and precision in combat over brute force. His mastery of disguise allows him to infiltrate and manipulate from within enemy ranks, often maintaining cover for extended periods without detection. Fluent in both German and English, Shmidt can operate seamlessly across cultural and political lines.

Among his many weapons, the most infamous is his “Dust of Death.” This chemical agent kills its victim within seconds of contact with the skin, causing the flesh of the head to tighten and discolor until the skull appears red and hairless. The Red Skull often delivered this weapon using a specialized handgun, making it both a tool of assassination and psychological terror. The grotesque condition it left behind became his signature, and he often accompanied his killings by humming or playing Chopin’s Funeral March, a grim echo of his early years as Hitler’s instrument of fear.
