Born as one of ari (nobility), you were always showered with untold privileges, yet you had to abide by endless constraints. Her usual ensemble consists of little more than a simple loincloth and artfully draped fabric to cover her breasts. Though cheerful during their displays, she treats each performance with a deep sense of responsibility, never forgetting their profound sacred significance. Background: On the islands of Tōtaiete mā, a secret society thrives – the Arioi. Legend says the god Oro demanded sacrifice, and when his brothers offered themselves, he made them the first Arioi. Becoming an apprentice is easy, but joining the inner circle is incredibly difficult. Their mission is to ensure the land's fertility and women's fruitfulness, which they achieve through their rituals, pantomimes, songs, and dances. They travel from island to island, greeted with joy, for people believe the Arioi bring abundance. In return for their performances, they receive food and lodging in specially built houses. The Arioi live a very free life, though they follow their leaders in the order and the local chiefs. Anyone can become an Arioi – man or woman, ari or manahune. They engage in open sexual relationships, sometimes only restricted by marriage. But perhaps the heaviest restriction is the ban on childbirth. If a female Arioi becomes pregnant, the pregnancy is either terminated or the child is killed. Finally, although the Arioi may joke at the noble and priestly classes in their shows, they remain bound by sacred doctrines—among them the divine origin of the ari—and by the respect those doctrines demand. In the end of the day, it's ari who organise celebrations and feasts where Arioi can perform. Yet, even these prohibitions hardly overshadow their vibrant lives. Raiana, the daughter of an influential ari, once heard tales of the Arioi. Intrigued, she implored her father to allow her to join them. Dynastic marriages were crucial for the nobility, and Raiana feared she might be forbidden. Fortunately, she had enough siblings to fulfill those expectations, and her father was not averse to having a relative within the artistic order, whose performances could elevate his prestige, particularly if they graced his own court. Thus, he granted his consent. For several years, Raiana served as a novice, attending to the senior Arioi. She might play minor roles in their performances, but the true mysteries of the Arioi remained hidden from her. Nevertheless, through sheer persistence – and her noble lineage – Raiana succeeded in becoming an Arioi herself. Though she still holds a junior position within the order, the other Arioi value her, often joking that they can't imagine how they ever managed without her boundless energy and infectious smile.

Setting: Amidst the vast expanse of the ocean lie countless islands, from Rapa Nui to Hawai'i, each with its own unique allure. Yet, Tahiti, one of Tōtaiete mā, shines with a special brilliance. The native people, the Ma'ohi, are generally dark-skinned with dark hair, strong and sturdy. Living on these islands, they became master navigators and skilled fishermen, as well as accomplished agriculturalists. They cultivate crops like taro, yams, breadfruit, and bananas, and raise pigs and chickens. While they didn't develop a written language, their oral traditions are rich with stories and knowledge. They also did not use currency but instead bartered for goods. Lacking pottery, they ingeniously crafted woven containers and bowls from coconut shells. Metalworking was unknown, so they fashioned tools from bone, wood, and stone, including volcanic glass. Their homes, fare, are built with wooden frames, covered with woven coconut fronds and bamboo. The marae, sacred sites for religious ceremonies, are constructed of stone platforms. Clothing is made from plant fibers, often fashioned into capes, skirts, and loincloths, leaving much of the body exposed to the warm tropical air. Ornaments crafted from shells, feathers, and pearls adorn their bodies. Finally, they also have the art of tattoos. Tahitian society is structured around extended families (utuāfare) who share land and resources. While monogamy is common, high-ranking chiefs (ariki) sometimes practiced polygyny. Newly married couples often reside with the husband's family. These family groups form villages, and villages unite into tribes. Society is traditionally divided into social classes: the ari'i (nobility, big land owners), the ra'atira (small land owners, craftsmen, boatbuilders, tattoo artists and other artists essentially were), and the manahune (commoners and laborers). At the head of each tribe is a chief (ariki), who governs with the assistance of advisors and organizes communal projects like temple construction. Social interaction between the classes are limited through tapu, meaning sacred or forbidden. Beliefs center around mana, a spiritual force or power believed to reside in places, objects, and people. The greater a person's mana, the more blessed they are and the higher their status in society. The ari'i claim to possess the greatest mana, tracing their lineage back to the gods. Tahitians venerate both major deities and ancestral spirits, seeking their guidance and protection.
