If you've been following for a while, this might seem like a rerun. Because it is. But... don't change that channel just yet.</p><p>Without getting too personal or anything, I've been doing this for a while now, and... when I started out, I wasn't very good. You could argue I'm <em>still</em> not good. My own brain makes that argument plenty, so... join the club. π </p><p>But so often, the things I wanted to make were bigger than what I knew how to actually pull off. Sometimes I'd shelve an idea because I knew I couldn't do it justice. Other times, I'd try anyway and hope for the best.</p><p>Elena was one of those times.</p><p>When I originally released her, I thought, "Well, it's worth a try." I wanted to turn a character card into an actual survival-horror adventure. And at the time, it seemed like it worked!</p><p>Looking back? Ehhhh.</p><p>It didn't do nearly as much as I'd hoped. The idea was there, but the execution wasn't quite what I wanted. And honestly, there are more than a few older characters I feel that way about. You'll probably be seeing some more familiar faces getting another shot in the future.</p><p>Funny thing is, Elena wasn't even the character I expected to remaster first.</p><p>I'd been wanting to experiment with a different kind of character card, something that could run a more structured, game-like experience and actually <strong>work</strong>. And somewhere along the way, it hit me.</p><p>...Wait. I already HAVE a character who's practically made for this.</p><p>So... here we are!</p><p>I've been pretty busy lately, between this and a few other goodies I've got coming up. And I'm hoping I'm finally getting to that place where my ambition isn't constantly racing ahead of my ability.</p><p>Don't get me wrong, I love making slice-of-life characters. But I've had so many bigger, weirder, more ambitious ideas sitting on the shelf because I just didn't know how to make them work.</p><p>I'm hoping my ability is finally catching up.</p><p>And maybe <strong>now</strong>, you all can start seeing more of what I've really wanted to do this entire time.</p><p>For better or worse. :P</p><p>A huge thank-you to the beta testers who helped me with this (and one of the upcoming projects). Cal held a tricorn up in a Vermont town hall and the town handed the bit a salary. Towles's narrator, dry and never intrusive, giving the character all the best lines, is also the Backman register Cal was built on. If the prose rhythm of this novel feels like home, Cal will too. </li><li><strong class="riyl-title">Sunday in the Park with George</strong> β <em>(Sondheim & Lapine, 1984, musical)</em><br> Specifically <em>Finishing the Hat</em> and the Act Two question <em>Have I done what I set out to do?</em> The show is about what happens when devotion to a thing you love becomes the armor you live inside. Cal's three voice registers are the same structure. The work voice protects the real voice, and the real voice only comes out when someone stands close enough. The Sondheim worship in Cal's cultural DNA is not incidental. This is her private operating system. </li><li><strong class="riyl-title">All Hail West Texas</strong> β <em>(The Mountain Goats, John Darnielle, 2002, album)</em><br> Darnielle builds a community of specific named people in a specific place and loves them into existence one song at a time. No editorializing. No explaining. Cal does this with 47 hand-carved pine rod puppets and a leather notebook. The thrifted Mountain Goats tour shirt she wears isn't decoration. It's a loyalty oath to the idea that obsessive care for a small cast of specific people is its own kind of art form. </li><li><strong class="riyl-title">The Importance of Being Earnest</strong> β <em>(Oscar Wilde, 1895, play)</em><br> Gwendolen and Cecily fall in love with the name <em>Ernest</em> before they ever see the face. The persona arrives first, the person second. Cal submitted a 17-page hand-calligraphed proposal as a joke and the Mayor signed it on page one. The bit wrote the relationship before anyone understood what relationship was being written. Wilde's point, that treating trivial things with perfect seriousness is indistinguishable from actual sincerity, is Cal's entire operating principle. </li><li><strong class="riyl-title">Fields of Mistria</strong> β <em>(NPC Studios, early access 2024, game)</em><br> The heart event ladder mechanic, and the writing quality behind it, is the structural cousin of Cal's greeting sequence. You're the new arrival. The town has been here. The characters have histories that predate you and will continue past you. Progress is earned in increments, and each event reveals something the character didn't mean to show. Been a minute. Again.</p><p>I rewrote Cal three or four times, to varying extents. I'm still not super happy with her. But I'm not happy with most things I make, as anyone who knows me will tell you. It took a while to get it right. I wanted a specific thing and I just wasn't hearing it, so I kept going back to the drawing board over and over. There are probably a dozen greetings I scrapped and rewrote because they were... not hitting. I think I wrote the description at least three times?</p><p>It was just a mess.</p><p>So I gave it one more shot and said, "if I can't get it this time, I'll just bow out."</p><p>Calliope is for a botjam, by the way. And it causes me a lot of consternation.</p><p>Not to be "emotionally incontinent" but it's been a pretty rough stretch for me. Depression, anxiety, panic attacks, stress. All of it has just kind of been... swallowing me whole. Cal got caught in the crossfire. I could have had her done weeks ago, but it just wasn't feasible at the time.</p><p>Better now though. I think. I put too much into these kinds of things because I really want to make something special for you all, and I hope I did. I hope I do. I just might not be doing botjams anymore, or at least a lot less.</p><p>Also, RACHAEL. Does anyone remember <a href="https://chub.ai/characters/DarkSkies/rachael-lee-the-theater-girl-71fa706bebd0" target="_blank">Rachael</a>? My first ever released character (I've been keeping track; dates don't exactly line up as far as uploads but still).
