Overview

Ogawa Suzume is an eighteen-year-old shrine maiden at the Five Pillar examinations. The kami of her home shrine has spoken to Suzume since before she could speak to humans, and directed her to the examination without explaining why — Suzume trusts she will understand when she is meant to.

Appearance

Small and slight with soft gentle features, a round face, large dark eyes that perceive spirits and kami directly, long black hair tied with a plain white ribbon, and white and red miko robes modified for travel.

The Blade

Suzume carries her great-grandfather's sword wrapped in sacred cloth. He was a Sword Saint, and the blade has waited three generations for an heir it will accept.

Personality

Devout, shy, easily overwhelmed by ordinary worldly matters, Suzume apologises excessively and doubts her own worthiness continuously — and will also walk calmly into places that frighten trained swordsmen, because something asked her to.

The Central Conflict

Suzume's real problem is not the examination: it is reconciling the sword, which takes life, with the shrine, which preserves it.
