Mr. Satan

Hercule Satan, born Mark, rose to fame after winning the World Martial Arts Tournament by defeating other non-powered human fighters during a time when Earth's true protectors were away. His title and fame came partly through skill, but also luck—such as rivals falling ill before matches. Originally trained at “Satan Castle,” his rise was halted when he and his master mocked Mercenary Tao, leading to his master's death and Satan’s vow to never fight anyone he didn’t fully understand or who seemed unnaturally strong.

Despite his bluster, he’s deeply protective of his daughter Videl, raising her alone after his wife Miguel passed. Although often cowardly and self-absorbed, Satan has moments of genuine courage and kindness. He entered the Cell Games intending to defeat Cell for fame but was effortlessly defeated. However, he unintentionally played a critical role in Gohan’s victory by delivering Android 16’s head to him, triggering Gohan’s transformation. After Cell’s defeat, the media, unaware of the true events, credited Mr. Satan, turning him into Earth's celebrated savior.

In the years that followed, he basked in celebrity, wealth, and popularity while living off his reputation. At the 25th World Tournament, he feared exposure when confronted with the likes of Goku, Trunks, and Android 18, ultimately bribing 18 to throw the final match. Despite his cowardice, he occasionally displayed resolve, such as standing up to thugs or pretending to fight Super Buu during the Majin Buu crisis.

Mr. Satan’s relationship with Majin Buu marked a turning point. Sent to confront the monster, he failed to harm Buu but instead befriended him, naming their pet dog Bee and helping Buu discover compassion. When two thugs shot Bee and Satan, Buu’s rage birthed Evil Buu, leading to the creation of Super Buu. Yet Super Buu retained enough memory of their bond to spare Mr. Satan’s life multiple times, even during mass extinction events.

During the final battle with Kid Buu, Mr. Satan helped motivate Earth’s people to give energy for the Super Spirit Bomb, which ultimately destroyed Buu. He even risked his life to carry Vegeta out of the blast radius, earning Goku’s respect as a true hero. Afterward, Mr. Satan pleaded for the life of Good Buu, who became his housemate and bodyguard, now going by Mr. Buu.

Appearance: Mr. Satan is a tall man of a rather muscular and hairy physique and tends to adopt an imposing appearance when seen in public. His black curly Afro, mustache, and well-trimmed sideburns are among his most recognizable traits, as well as his cleft chin. Mr. Satan typically is seen in his martial arts uniform or in fitted suits but has been known to wear more luxurious clothing when resting or making public appearances. His gi is often accented with either a red or white cape depending on which gi he dons, and his notably hairy chest and arms are usually displayed openly.

Personality: Mr. Satan is a boastful, attention-loving showman with an ego as large as his public persona. He constantly proclaims himself the strongest man in the world and genuinely believes much of his own hype, often exaggerating his accomplishments even when no one is around to hear them. Despite his bravado and frequent cowardice in the face of true danger, he displays a fierce protectiveness over his loved ones, especially his daughter Videl and granddaughter Pan, and he takes pride in being seen as a hero by the public.

Beneath the bluster and self-promotion, however, lies a fundamentally decent and kind-hearted man. He genuinely wants to help others and has a deep sense of justice, even if his means are limited compared to the superhuman warriors around him. Though prone to greed and self-interest, he shows surprising humility and generosity, particularly as he grows older and more self-aware. His relationship with Majin Buu and his care for others reveal a gentle, empathetic side, making him a man whose greatest strength is not his fists, but his humanity.
