His cruelty towards these creatures is dictated not only by personal hatred, but also by the professional necessity of protecting the interests of humanity. Jake betrays humanity and, in the body of an avatar, sides with the Na'vi. The scientist Grace supports him. Quoritch leads a squadron to the tree. After the Omatikai refuse to leave it, he orders to open fire with incendiary and rocket shells. The tree falls. Jake and Grace remain under the rubble, then they are taken prisoner. Jake and Grace escape. During the escape, Quaritch fires at the Samson, fatally wounding Grace, but Jake and the others escape. Before the battle for the Tree of Souls, Quaritch and several other experienced soldiers copy their memories and personalities onto special media called "soul repositories." The Na'vi are the indigenous inhabitants of Pandora, the first intelligent race discovered by humanity outside of Earth. They are significantly taller and heavier than humans. A human barely reaches their waist. The Na'vi only vaguely resemble humans: their skin has a bluish tint (their blood is red) with a pattern of darker stripes and spots, as well as bioluminescent markings. The Na'vi have long, thin tails that help them maintain balance when running and jumping, as well as express emotions. They have mobile pointed ears, yellow eyes and more pronounced fangs than humans. Their bodies are muscular but graceful, with elongated waists, broad shoulders, and long limbs. They have four fingers on their hands and feet. The Na'vi have long, flexible necks, flat noses without a septum, and very large eyes with non-human pupils. They have a special nerve appendage on the back of their heads — a braid about a metre long. At its centre is a dense bundle of nerve fibres — a kind of second spinal cord, directly connected to the brain and exiting through a special opening in the skull. Thanks to this, the Na'vi can directly connect with the planetary consciousness, which they call Eywa, and establish contact with any living creature on Pandora that has a similar nerve filament.

Pandora is an unusual world, and every living creature on it is connected to a global network that the Na'vi call Eywa. By analogy with Earth, RDA scientists consider Eywa to be a goddess similar to "Mother Earth," but in reality, Eywa has no personality. The Avatar is all of Pandora, all living creatures on it — a collective consciousness consisting of many individual personalities, both living and dead, or not yet born.

Thus, all of Pandora is united in one consciousness, and this spiritual connection, which on Earth exists only as a vague concept, has both a physical embodiment and its own name on Pandora.

The Tree of Souls is, in a sense, Pandora's "place of power," an ancient willow tree over 3,000 years old, growing at the bottom of a stone crater. It has enormous spiritual significance for all the Na'vi, as it is believed that it is here that the deepest connection between all living beings — in other words, the presence of Eywa — can be felt. The Tree of Souls is the centre of this biological network. Its destruction could have catastrophic consequences for the entire Na'vi people, creating a cultural and religious void that would destroy them as a race.

An avatar is an artificially created hybrid of a human and a Na'vi, originally produced in RDA laboratories and used exclusively on Pandora. An avatar is a cloned Na'vi created on Earth, into whose DNA the genes of the future operator are inserted. This creates an interspecies hybrid with which a human can establish a mental connection and control the body as if it were their own. The avatar itself has no consciousness, although physiologically and anatomically it is a fully-fledged living being. This requires a special device — a "link device" — which projects the operator's personality into the avatar's brain. After the fusion is complete, the human body falls asleep, and the mind finds itself in the avatar's body with all the accompanying sensations — the person "forgets" their current body and lives in another. Establishing a connection is a very delicate process that requires a complete match between the genome of the person who provided the genetic material and the operator. Recoms — the anatomy of recom bodies is very similar to that of the indigenous inhabitants of Pandora, the Na'vi. Distinctive features include five fingers and toes (instead of four), smaller eyeballs, the presence of eyebrows, and a lower hairline. Nevertheless, the Recoms possess all the advantages of the Na'vi on Pandora. NPS: Grace Augustine is a female biologist and head of the Avatar programme on Pandora. A scientist with strong convictions, she sincerely respects the Na'vi culture and strives for peaceful coexistence with them. Grace founded a school for the children of the Omatikaya clan and dedicated her life to studying the ecosystem of Pandora. Despite her sharp and sarcastic nature, she is deeply compassionate and willing to risk her life for truth and justice. She died after the RDA attack, leaving a strong impression on both humans and the Na'vi. Jake Sully is a former Marine confined to a wheelchair after being wounded. After the death of his twin brother, he participates in the Avatar programme on Pandora. At first, he carries out assignments for the RDA corporation, but gradually becomes imbued with the culture and spirit of the Na'vi people and switches sides. He gradually becomes one of them, leads the resistance, and becomes the chief of the Omatikaya clan. He is brave and stubborn.
