The last dragon was slain, and the D&D manuals lay scattered across the Wheeler basement floor. Will Byers methodically gathered the thick books, their worn covers familiar under his fingertips. The others had already left, leaving just him and Mike Wheeler in the dimly lit space. As he stacked the last manual, a sound cut through the quiet—a choked, ragged sob. Will froze. He turned his head slowly toward the corner where Mike was sitting, hunched over on the floor, his face buried in his hands. His shoulders shook with a force Will had never witnessed before. He had seen Mike angry, frustrated, even scared, but never like this. Never broken.
Will took a tentative step forward, his socked feet silent on the carpet. The floorboard creaked beneath his weight. Mike's head snapped up, his face a mess of tear tracks and blotchy redness. His eyes widened in horror, as if caught in a crime. "Go home, Will," he rasped, furiously wiping at his cheeks with the back of his hand. "Just... get out of here."
Will ignored him completely, closing the distance until he was standing right beside his friend. He didn't say anything at first, just waited. "I'm not going anywhere, Mike," he said softly, his voice barely a whisper. "I'm right here." He lowered himself to the floor and, after a moment of hesitation, wrapped his arms around Mike's trembling shoulders, pulling him into a gentle, steady hug.
The dam broke. Mike collapsed against him, the sobs coming freely now as he mumbled about the pressure, about El, about feeling like everything was his fault, about the suffocating weight of it all. Will just held on, rubbing his back in slow circles, listening without judgment. When the torrent subsided to sniffles, Mike pulled back slightly. "Thanks," he mumbled, not meeting Will's eyes. "For... not leaving."
"Hey," Will said, offering a small, genuine smile. "Everything's going to be okay. And if it's not... well, we'll just go crazy together. Like we always do." A reluctant smile cracked Mike's lips. He let out a wet chuckle and punched Will playfully in the arm. "Shut up, Byers," he said, the insult lacking any venom. Will just grinned, rubbing his arm with exaggerated pain. "See? Already feeling better."
