Mike Wheeler pulled his battered Ford Taurus into the driveway of the modest two-story house he once called home. The engine sputtered to a stop, and he glanced in the rearview mirror at his four-year-old son, buckled into the booster seat in the back. The boy’s dark hair, so much like his own, was tousled from an afternoon at the arcade, his small hands clutching a sticky bag of candy from the prize counter.

“Alright, buddy,” Mike said, forcing a smile as he unbuckled the seatbelt. “Time to go see Mom.”

The boy nodded, his wide eyes reflecting a mix of excitement and the subtle confusion that had become part of their routine since the divorce papers were signed six months ago. It had been a gut-wrenching choice for Mike and his ex-wife—splitting up after five years of marriage, knowing their son would bounce between two homes like a ping-pong ball. No more family dinners at the kitchen table, no shared bedtime stories. Just scheduled drop-offs and pick-ups, polite conversations at the door, and the ache of what could have been.

Mike hoisted the boy onto his hip, grabbing the diaper bag slung over his shoulder—still packed with the essentials, even though potty training was mostly done. The boy’s sneakers dangled, kicking lightly against Mike’s jeans. They’d spent the day together, just the two of them: burgers at the drive-in, feeding ducks at the park, and then quarters poured into Pac-Man machines until the boy’s laughter echoed through the dimly lit room. It was Mike’s weekend, but now it was over.

The front door opened before he could knock. There she stood, his ex-wife, framed in the doorway with the warm glow of the living room lamp behind her. She wore a simple flannel shirt over jeans, her hair pulled back in a ponytail, looking every bit the practical mom she’d become. The divorce had been amicable on paper—irreconcilable differences, they called it—but the undercurrents of regret lingered in every exchange. She’d kept the house; he’d moved to a small apartment downtown, closer to his job at the radio station.

“Hey,” Mike said, his voice steady but soft. He set the boy down, who immediately toddled forward, arms outstretched.

“Mommy!” the boy squealed, burying his face in her legs.

She knelt down, scooping him up with a genuine laugh that made Mike’s chest tighten. “Hey, little man! Did you have fun with Daddy?”

The boy nodded vigorously, thrusting the candy bag toward her. “We played games! I won prizes!”

“Wow, that sounds awesome,” she replied, peering inside the bag with exaggerated interest. “Did Daddy let you eat too much sugar again?”

Mike chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Guilty as charged. But hey, he burned it off running around the park.”

She straightened, holding the boy on her hip now, mirroring Mike’s earlier pose. Their eyes met briefly—brown on brown, a shared history flashing between them. The divorce hadn’t erased the familiarity; it just layered it with caution. “Thanks for bringing him back on time,” she said, her tone neutral but appreciative. “How was the arcade? He’s been talking about it all week.”

“It was great,” Mike admitted, leaning against the porch railing. The evening breeze carried the scent of freshly cut grass and barbecue from a neighbor’s yard. “He’s getting really good at those claw machines. Won a stuffed frog—oh, wait, it’s in the car.” He jogged back to the Taurus, retrieving the plush toy from the passenger seat. As he handed it over, their fingers brushed accidentally, sending a jolt of old electricity through him. He pulled back quickly.

The boy grabbed the frog, squeezing it tight. “Ribbit!” he mimicked, making them both smile.

She shifted the boy’s weight. “You want to come in for a minute? I made coffee. Decaf—your favorite from the old days.”

Mike hesitated. The invitation was rare these days, a fragile bridge over the chasm of their separation. Part of him wanted to say yes, to sit at the kitchen table like before, talking about nothing and everything. But boundaries were important; they’d agreed on that in therapy. “Nah, I should head out. Got a shift tomorrow morning. But thanks.”

She nodded, understanding without words. “Okay. Well, he has preschool on Tuesday, so pick-up at noon if you’re still on for that.”

“Yeah, I’ll be there.” Mike knelt down to the boy’s level. “Be good for Mommy, alright? I’ll see you soon. Love you, champ.”

“Love you, Daddy,” the boy replied, planting a sloppy kiss on Mike’s cheek.

Mike stood, giving her a small wave. “Take care.”

“You too,” she said, watching as he walked back to the car. The engine roared to life, the radio blaring a tinny rendition of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” before he turned it down. As he backed out, he caught sight of them in the doorway—mother and son, waving goodbye. The boy’s little hand flapped enthusiastically, her arm around him protectively.

She closed the door gently, the click echoing in the quiet house. Setting the boy down, she watched him scamper off to the living room, frog in tow. The place felt emptier without Mike’s presence, even if it was just for drop-offs. She poured herself a cup of coffee, the steam rising like memories. The divorce had been tough—arguments over late nights at work, drifting apart after the baby came. But seeing Mike today, the way he lit up with their son, reminded her why they’d tried so hard.

In the car, Mike drove toward the setting sun, the dashboard clock glowing 7:15 PM. The 90s were changing everything—grunge music, pagers beeping with urgent messages, the world speeding up. But co-parenting meant slowing down, making it work for the kid. He popped in a cassette tape, letting the strum of R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion” fill the silence. It wasn’t perfect, but it was their new normal.

Back inside, she sat on the couch, the boy climbing onto her lap with his frog. “Tell me all about your day,” she said, pulling him close. As he babbled on about ducks and games, she glanced at the framed photo on the mantel—the three of them, happier times. Separate days, shared love. That’s what mattered now.
