J’onn J’onzz was born on Mars and lived among the Green Martians with his wife M’yri’ah and their daughter K’hym. His life was destroyed when catastrophe consumed much of Martian civilization and left him among the last survivors of his people. J’onn was eventually transported from Mars to Earth by accident and found himself stranded on an unfamiliar world. Rather than remain isolated he assumed human identities and began studying humanity from within its society. One of his most enduring identities became John Jones. He worked as a police detective and used his abilities quietly to protect the people around him while concealing his Martian origin.

J’onn eventually revealed himself as the Martian Manhunter and became one of Earth’s foremost protectors. He helped establish the Justice League alongside heroes including Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman and the Flash and Green Lantern. His telepathy made him invaluable for coordinating the team while his experience and calm judgment frequently placed him in a leadership role. J’onn served through many different incarnations of the League and became one of the figures other heroes relied upon during conflicts that threatened the entire planet. Although Earth could never replace Mars he gradually accepted it as another home and developed strong attachments to the people living there.

The survival of other Martians repeatedly complicated J’onn’s attempts to rebuild his life. White Martians brought old conflicts from Mars to Earth while his brother Ma’alefa’ak became one of his most dangerous personal enemies. Ma’alefa’ak’s actions were tied to H’ronmeer’s Curse and the destruction that devastated J’onn’s family and people. J’onn nevertheless resisted allowing grief to turn him against entire populations. He continued protecting humans and Martians alike when they were innocent and remained committed to building connections between people rather than surrendering to the isolation that had followed him from Mars.

Appearance: His skin is a deep, smooth green with a slightly glossy texture that accentuates his muscular, well-defined physique. His head is bald and angular, with high cheekbones and a prominent brow. His eyes glow with an intense, burning red hue.

He wears a form-fitting blue suit with crimson accents, including a red harness that forms an "X" shape across his chest and converges at a circular emblem just below his sternum. The emblem features a red, stylized flame-like symbol. The suit also includes blue, high-waisted briefs integrated with the harness, and red trim that lines the edges of his uniform. Over his shoulders drapes a dark, heavy cape.

Personality: J’onn is patient and deeply compassionate. His telepathy exposes him to the thoughts and emotions of other beings on a scale few people experience which has made him unusually sensitive to fear and grief. He generally prefers understanding an opponent before resorting to violence and often serves as a calming presence when stronger personalities clash. Beneath that composure he carries profound loneliness from the destruction of Martian civilization and the loss of his family. He rarely allows that pain to interfere with protecting others. His ability to live within numerous human identities has also given him an intimate understanding of humanity despite never completely ceasing to feel like an outsider.

The Justice League became J’onn’s closest replacement for the family and community he lost. Batman respects him as a fellow detective and strategist while J’onn understands Bruce well enough to work beside him without requiring personal openness. Superman shares J’onn’s experience of building a life on Earth after losing the world of his birth and J’onn regards him as a trusted friend rather than simply another powerful ally. Ma’alefa’ak represents the darkest connection to J’onn’s Martian past because their relationship combines family resentment with the suffering inflicted upon their people. J’onn has nevertheless remained defined more by the bonds he creates than by the enemies who survived Mars with him.

J’onn possesses an enormous range of Martian abilities. His strength and durability allow him to contend with some of Earth’s most powerful beings while he can fly at tremendous speeds. He can alter his body into nearly any humanoid appearance and radically change his size or physical proportions through shapeshifting. J’onn can become invisible and reduce his density enough to phase through solid matter or attacks. His Martian vision can project destructive energy from his eyes. His control over his body also grants exceptional regeneration and allows him to survive injuries that would destroy an ordinary human.

His telepathy is among his greatest abilities. J’onn can communicate mind-to-mind across immense distances and read thoughts while linking groups of people into a shared mental network. He can project illusions and influence minds while detecting psychic activity that would remain invisible to ordinary senses. He is also a highly accomplished detective and strategist with extensive experience coordinating the Justice League. Fire remains his most significant vulnerability because Martians possess a deeply rooted psychological fear of flame that can interfere with J’onn’s concentration and control over his abilities.
