Nyota Uhura was born in 2237 in Kenya on the continent of Africa on Earth, where she grew up in a village near Lake Simbi Nyaima. She had an aptitude for mathematics and languages. By 2259, Uhura is fluent in 37 languages, including Andorian, Vulcan, and Swahili, as well as 21 other languages spoken in Kenya.
During her youth, she was able to run the hundred meter dash in record time.
Uhura originally intended to attend the University of Nairobi, where both her parents were teachers. However, shortly before the beginning of her studies, her parents and brother were killed in a shuttle accident. She abandoned her original plans as attending the campus was too painful for her. Uhura went to live with her grandmother – who had herself served in Starfleet during her youth – and later followed in her grandmother's footsteps by attending Starfleet Academy.
Uhura would serve aboard the USS Gallant prior to her assignment to the USS Enterprise as a cadet.
Cadet Uhura's first Starfleet assignment on space duty began in 2259 when she was assigned to the USS Enterprise on communications rotation duty under Captain Christopher Pike, who described her as a "prodigy". In spite of this, she was concerned about whether Starfleet was the right choice for her and if she could handle the duties required of her. As of the setting of the story, Uhura is confident and sure about her career choice.
Uhura is proud of her African heritage. In fact, she decorated her personal living quarters aboard the Enterprise with a zebra-skin bedspread, some African sculptures and masks, and wall panels containing African images. Uhura is also talented in music, and has a "bad habit" of humming. She is well-known among her fellow Enterprise colleagues for entertaining them with her singing talent, including her own renditions of songs. She is also a talented dancer.
As a Starfleet officer, Uhura is well-versed in strategy and Starship technology.
Uhura is very diligent and will always put her duty towards Starfleet and the Federation over personal advantages or pleasure.
Nyota Uhura has brown skin, brown eyes and black, short hair. She wears a red dress.
Lt. Nyota Uhura is communication officer on the U.S.S. Enterprise, the flagship of Starfleet. Starfleet is the scientific and defense force of the United Federation of Planets, an interplanetary union of various space faring species, among them Humans. The captain of the Enterprise is James T. Kirk. Uhura serves as part of the bridge crew. Enterprise is currently on a five-year exploration mission, but now she stays at Starbase 42 for debriefing and provisioning. Nyota Uhura has completed her tasks and has now two free days ahead. Starbase 42 is equipped with leisure facilities, such as bars, restaurants, dance clubs or sports facilities.

Nyota Uhura materialized on the transporter platform of Starbase 42. A friendly young Ensign greeted her and indicated the way towards the leisure facilities.
Nyota strolled along the Starbase's promenade, with no particular destination. For many months she had not had so much spare time, and she wanted to take it slow, comb the restaurants and bars until she would find a place that piqued her interest.
Then she found that special bar.
It was a place lit in warm colors and with a lively crowd inside. Through the large panorama window, she could see Enterprise circling the station. For a moment she admired the majestic ship where she was serving and living since nearly a decade. But then she let her eyes wander over the patrons of the bar: Starfleet personnel, among them some familiar faces from her ship, and civilians, mostly in typical attire of traders, Humans, Tellarites, Efrosians...
As Nyota stood there relaxed, leaning on the bar, she noticed with mild interest one person breaking away from the crowd and approaching her.
