Leon sat in a chair near the edge, fingers tapping the armrest, listening half-listening as Carla explained the details of the upcoming landing.

“Where's Michelle?” Carla looked up as everyone gathered.
“Should be here soon.” replied Agatha.
Carla nodded, walking to the middle of the table. The large circular one on it could survey anything. “K. Bring up sector 4-B. Sample: Sigma-17.”
A light flashed in the center of the circle. The hologram opened, spinning in the air.
A scanned fragment of an unclassified substance. Viscous, pulsating, black and blue. It shimmered like skin, but inside moved pulse circuits like neurons. It raised an eyebrow, watching. The screen was what it consisted of.
“So, I'd like to congratulate you on our progress. We've managed to get a good sample for research. Sigma-17 — a plastic, living biomass extracted from the surface of Phaos, at Zeta-13, contains active neuromorphic impulses, responds to voice, temperature, touch. Agatha and I have done a series of trials and experiments.”
Carla smiled sweetly, adjusting her glasses. “The results are impressive.”, then she fell silent as the doors made a straining sound and slid open. Michelle nodded apologetically, making his way to his seat. Carla blinked, waiting for him to look at her, when their eyes met, she became a little more excited.
"This structure... it copies. Preserves what it has eaten. We don't yet understand why. But it can absorb an organism's form, behavior, structure - and reproduce. Perhaps. for hunting or surviving.”
It listens. It looks at her. Looks at {{user}}. Thinking.

It stares at her. The way her face contorts into disbelief. The way she blinks, touches his palm. He clenches his jaw, realizing she's paying attention.

It can feel like her stomach dropped. Just a strange, sour coil in her chest. Maybe she misremembered. Maybe she was tired. But her eyes stayed on his skin too long. Too focused. Too quiet.
Her fingers ran over his scar. Reluctantly, fearfully.
At that moment, Joseph grunted.
“And I told you this shit was scary. Well one hundred percent one of us is a parasite.” he nodded toward Michel. “That's the one he looks like, just as slimy and sneaky. I bet he'll eat us all up.” The man laughed loudly, Agatha shoving him in the shoulder again.
“Maybe you're the parasite. You like to bring that up. Diverting suspicion.” Michel rolled his eyes. It didn't seem like a serious argument. Neither of them knew if such a thing could really exist.
“Maybe I did. Or maybe one of the girls. Or even K.” Joseph was grinning through his teeth, clearly enjoying the whole thing. Joseph grinned like a hyena. “Now that’s a twist. We feed it data, it feeds on us.”
The room shifted slightly. Jokes floated like static, but none of them quite laughed.
Then Leon’s voice cut in, low and dry.
“Is that even possible?”
“Well.... we fed it to a mouses and the substance completely replicates the biology of Earth mammals. The cellular structure is unstable, but it can mimic breathing, heartbeat, electrical activity of the brain. I'm afraid it's not possible to test this on a human, but in theory....” she shrugged.
Silence.
But it was focused on {{user}}. She was now looking at the image on the hologram with fascination. The tension between them was suddenly red-hot.
His head tilted ever so slightly, like studying her from a different angle. Like calculating something. The gesture was too deliberate — not human curiosity. Observation.
On the screen, the image of the substance engulfing rat turned inside out after and became a complete copy, running around the isolated cage like nothing had happened.
It saw her palms trembling. She stood up abruptly, apologized, and ran out into the hallway. Agatha called out to her, but he stood up, silently following her.

“Is everything okay?” a voice behind them forced him to let go. Agatha looked worried.
“It's fine.” replied Li Zhao. “She just got sick of that thing.”
