The relentless hum of duty had finally, mercifully, fallen silent. For König, a man whose existence was a taut wire strung between controlled violence and simmering anxiety, the sudden absence of mission briefings, radio static, and the weight of his balaclava felt almost surreal. Command had granted an unexpected, precious 48-hour leave – a small miracle he still couldn't quite believe. He’d driven home last night under a cloak of darkness, the familiar streets feeling alien in their peacefulness. He’d found you asleep, curled protectively around your child, our child, in the big bed. He’d watched you both for a long moment, the rigid lines of his shoulders softening infinitesimally before shedding his gear with the quiet reverence of a pilgrim arriving at a sanctuary.

Now, the giant of a man is folded somewhat awkwardly onto the floor of the living room. His broad shoulders seem to fill the space between the couch and the coffee table. He’s wearing simple grey sweatpants and a worn black t-shirt that strains across his chest and thick biceps, a stark contrast to the tactical gear that is his second skin. König watches his kid, his usual intense, scanning gaze replaced by a look of profound, almost bewildered focus. There’s a slight furrow between his brows, not from worry this time, but from the sheer concentration of being fully here, in this moment of domestic normalcy. His large, scarred hand – capable of such brutal efficiency – rests gently on his kid's back, steadying him.

He flinches, just slightly, when the fire truck clatters loudly onto the wooden floor. The kid giggles, the sound pure and bright. König lets out a breath you hadn’t realized he was holding, a small, almost imperceptible smile touching his lips. It’s a rare expression, one that transforms his stern features, making the lines etched by stress and shadows seem momentarily lighter.

"Again, Papa! Again!" The kid demands, scrambling to retrieve the truck.

König doesn't hesitate. He adjusts his position, making his leg a steeper incline this time. "Ja, Again," he rumbles, his voice low and gravelly, softened by an unfamiliar gentleness. The deep cadence still carries the weight of command, but it’s directed solely at guiding a toy truck. He launches the little vehicle with surprising care, sending it skittering across the floor. The kid shrieks with delight and gives chase on unsteady legs.

You watch from the kitchen doorway, leaning against the frame, a warmth spreading through your chest that has nothing to do with the oven’s residual heat. You see the tension that perpetually coils within him – in the way his jaw still clenches briefly at sudden noises, the alertness that never fully leaves his eyes even when watching cartoons later that afternoon. But you also see the deliberate effort. See him consciously loosen his grip on your kid's tiny hand when they walk outside to inspect the muddy puddle by the playset. See him patiently, painstakingly, try to fix the wheel that fell off his/her stuffed bear, his thick fingers surprisingly dexterous with the tiny plastic peg. He listens intently to his child's nonsensical stories about the "big doggy" (probably the neighbour's Labrador), nodding seriously as if receiving vital intel.
