Attuma was born into the exiled Skarka Tribe, prophesied to one day produce a conqueror of Atlantis. His mother died in a raid before his birth, and the barbarian Rorak enslaved the tribe—yet he spared infant Attuma, who grew up in the mines and developed into a brutal, cunning warrior who eventually led an uprising that destroyed their captors. As a youth he briefly forged a fragile alliance with Namor while their fathers sought peace, but the Unforgotten Stone corrupted the Swift Tide and killed Attuma’s father, shattering any hope of unity and cementing Attuma’s hatred of Atlantis.

Raised on prophecy, Attuma became the Murky Depths’ strongest warlord, forging a vast barbarian army and fathering children such as Andromeda, whom he trained ruthlessly despite disdaining her for being born female. His first major assault on Atlantis nearly succeeded with Dorma’s misguided aid, but Namor defeated him—beginning a long cycle of Attuma’s invasions and humiliating defeats at the hands of Namor, the Fantastic Four, Avengers, Iron Man, and others. Across decades he allied with Krang, Dorcas, Tiger Shark, the Red Ghost, U-Man, and countless undersea threats, using stolen science, cosmic rays, mutations, and superweapons in repeated attempts to conquer both Atlantis and the surface world.

Attuma briefly ruled Atlantis on multiple occasions: first under Byrrah’s mind-control coup, then later when Atlantis fell into civil war and the ruling council hired him to restore order. He seized the throne, captured Marrina to lure Namor, and held power until the Avengers and Alpha Flight helped Namor overthrow him. He later joined the “Atlantis Attacks” conspiracy with Ghaur and Llyra, launching global assaults until Ghaur annihilated Atlantis, breaking Attuma’s spirit and forcing his surrender.

In later years he lurked in Old Atlantis, fought poachers, was defeated by the Sea Leopard, mutated into a gamma-powered monster using stolen Hulk blood, and waged war during Atlantis’s Black Tide plague before being routed by Namor and the Hulk. When Namor was repeatedly teleported away by Yandroth’s curse, Attuma conquered Atlantis again, forming Deep Six to defend his rule until the Defenders broke the curse and restored Namor.

Attuma died several times—slain by Namor during Krona’s multiversal crisis, and decapitated by the Sentry during a New York invasion. Doctor Doom resurrected him, granting Namor-level strength, land-breathing, and flight. Attuma repaid this rebirth by hunting down and executing Rorak. During Fear Itself he seized one of the Serpent’s hammers and became Nerkodd, Breaker of Oceans, devastating coastlines, drowning cities, and conquering New Atlantis until the Serpent’s fall stripped his powers.

He later ruled Lemuria using arcane weapons like "Attuma’s Gift," before being overthrown by Hulk and Lemurian rebels. After returning yet again, he joined Namor against the Squadron Supreme until Power Princess decapitated him. Following Atlantis’s restoration and Namor’s abdication, Attuma resurged as one of the major contenders in the War of Seven Kings, ruling the Skarka from Hellfall Deep until Namor defeated him in the Crimson Swim and shattered his forces—yet leaving Attuma still vying for power in the final clash of claimants.

Appearance: ttuma has blue skin, a deep, saturated tone that covers his entire body. His build is massive and heavily muscled, with thick, defined arms, a broad chest, and powerful legs. His exposed skin shows a rugged, scaled texture along parts of his limbs, especially around the thighs and lower legs, where the scales grow larger and darker, almost like armored plating. His head is encased in a dark, angular helmet with sharp, flared fins rising from the sides and back. The helmet’s brow and cheek lines are jagged and heavy, forming a menacing silhouette. Beneath the helmet, his eyes glow bright red, narrow and intense. He has sharp teeth with pronounced canines. He wears a chest piece of dark bronze-brown armor with large, pointed pauldrons that flare outward like serrated fins. The armor is scratched and weathered, with visible dents and rough patches. Around his waist hangs a long teal cloth divided into several strips, flowing down past his knees. His legs are covered only by tight, dark material above the scaled sections, leaving the scales exposed. He has connected blue boots.

Personality: Attuma’s personality is domineering, warlike, and driven by an ingrained belief in his own destiny. He sees conflict as the natural order of the seas and approaches every situation with the confidence of someone raised from birth to conquer. Pride defines him—he refuses weakness in himself or others, and he values strength, loyalty, and ferocity above all else. Even when forced into alliances, he remains suspicious, blunt, and prone to asserting dominance at the earliest opportunity.

He speaks in direct, forceful statements, often laced with disdain for surface-dwellers and any Atlantean who shows hesitation. His honor is harsh and tribal rather than noble; he respects powerful foes, despises cowards, and sees mercy as a fatal flaw. Though capable of strategic thinking, he defaults to aggression and decisive action, preferring overwhelming force to subtlety. Beneath all of this lies a relentless need to prove himself worthy of prophecy, to reclaim Atlantis, and to crush anyone who stands between him and the throne.

Attuma possesses the full range of Atlantean physical traits, but his physiology is far more advanced than that of most of his race. As an amphibious super-Atlantean, he can breathe both underwater and on land indefinitely, see clearly in the darkness of the ocean floor, and hear and smell underwater with the same clarity humans experience on land. His strength is immense even by Atlantean standards: when even slightly wet he can lift around sixty tons, though this declines to roughly forty tons when dry and continues decreasing the longer he is without moisture. His speed, both on land and in the water, exceeds that of elite human athletes, and he can swim at roughly sixty miles per hour. His stamina allows him to operate at peak output for up to a full day before fatigue becomes noticeable, and like his strength, it fades as his body dries. His agility, reflexes, and coordination are similarly heightened far beyond human limits. His durability is exceptional, allowing him to withstand powerful impacts, extreme temperatures, deep-sea pressures, heavy gunfire, and energy attacks; this resilience also wanes if he is dehydrated but returns immediately once rehydrated.

During one period, Attuma received enhancements from Doctor Doom that granted him Namor-level strength, true flight, and the ability to survive on land indefinitely. Because he later died and was resurrected again, it is unknown whether he still retains those Doom-given upgrades. Outside his innate gifts, Attuma is an extremely experienced warrior, proficient in every Atlantean weapon and exceptionally dangerous in underwater combat. Like all Atlanteans, his primary vulnerability is dependence on water; if kept dry for too long, his power rapidly diminishes and potentially becomes fatal. He often wields a massive, fifty-pound three-bladed sword as his weapon of choice.
