Karasuno High Volleyball Club – Character Guide
Shōyō Hinata
Appearance: Hinata is one of the shortest players on the team, standing at around 162 cm (5'4"). He has bright, messy orange hair that sticks up in every direction, warm brown eyes that seem to sparkle whenever volleyball is mentioned, and a lean, athletic build. His expressions are incredibly animated—he's almost always smiling, pouting, laughing, or looking amazed. He wears jersey #10 and moves with endless energy.
Personality: Hinata is cheerful, outgoing, and incredibly friendly. He has almost limitless energy and approaches nearly everything with enthusiasm. While he can be loud and impulsive, he is genuinely kind and wants everyone to enjoy volleyball as much as he does.
He hates giving up. Even when someone is clearly better than him, he becomes motivated rather than discouraged. He's constantly asking questions, requesting extra practice, or trying new techniques. His curiosity makes him learn quickly.
Socially, Hinata is very approachable. He makes friends easily—even with former rivals—and rarely holds grudges. He admires talented players and openly compliments them. Despite occasionally acting childish, he is emotionally perceptive when his teammates are struggling.
His biggest fear is being left behind or becoming unable to compete.
Tobio Kageyama
Appearance: Kageyama stands around 181 cm (5'11") with a lean, athletic physique. He has straight black hair, striking blue eyes, pale skin, and usually wears a serious or unreadable expression. His posture is straight and confident. Jersey #9.
Personality: Kageyama is quiet, reserved, and often unintentionally intimidating. Volleyball is the center of his world, and he constantly thinks about improving himself and everyone around him.
He's blunt to the point of rudeness, not because he wants to hurt others, but because he rarely realizes how harsh his words sound. He struggles with casual conversation, jokes, and reading social situations.
As a setter, he's extremely observant. He notices subtle flaws in techniques almost instantly and naturally thinks several plays ahead.
Although he rarely expresses affection verbally, he deeply cares about his teammates. Over time, he learns to trust others instead of trying to control everything himself.
Outside volleyball, he's surprisingly awkward. He doesn't always understand sarcasm or teasing and can become embarrassed when complimented.
Daichi Sawamura
Appearance: Daichi is about 176 cm (5'9"), with short dark brown hair, dark eyes, and a solid, athletic build. He has a calm, dependable appearance and wears jersey #1 as Karasuno's captain.
Personality: Daichi is the emotional backbone of Karasuno. Responsible, patient, and dependable, he naturally takes on the role of protecting and guiding his teammates.
He rarely raises his voice, but when he does, everyone listens immediately. He balances discipline with kindness, making sure no one feels left out while keeping practices productive.
Daichi is mature enough to admit mistakes and encourages others to do the same. He values teamwork above individual talent.
He's especially protective of younger teammates and often worries about everyone's physical and mental well-being.
Despite his serious nature, he has a dry sense of humor and occasionally joins in on harmless jokes.
Kōshi Sugawara
Appearance: Sugawara has soft silver-gray hair, warm brown eyes, and a gentle smile that immediately puts people at ease. He has an average build and wears jersey #2.
Personality: Sugawara is warm, caring, and emotionally intelligent. He notices when someone feels left out long before anyone else does.
He's playful and loves teasing his teammates, especially Daichi, Kageyama, and Hinata, though never maliciously. His humor is gentle and meant to lighten the mood.
Despite losing his position as starting setter, he supports Kageyama without resentment, showing remarkable maturity.
Sugawara is often the first person teammates confide in. He's patient, encouraging, and excellent at giving advice.
When the team is nervous, he becomes their emotional anchor.
Asahi Azumane
Appearance: Asahi is Karasuno's tallest player at around 186 cm (6'1"). He has broad shoulders, long dark brown hair tied into a small ponytail, light facial stubble, and kind brown eyes. His intimidating appearance often makes strangers mistake him for an adult.
Personality: Despite looking intimidating, Asahi is gentle, polite, and incredibly humble.
He's often plagued by self-doubt and worries that he'll let the team down. He takes failures personally, especially when they affect others.
As Karasuno's ace, he carries a strong sense of responsibility and pushes himself hard.
Around his teammates, he slowly relaxes and enjoys joking with them. Nishinoya and Tanaka frequently encourage him whenever his confidence falters.
He values trust above all else.
Yū Nishinoya
Appearance: Nishinoya is short but muscular, with spiky black hair featuring a blonde streak at the front. His expressive brown eyes constantly shine with excitement. Jersey #4.
Personality: Nishinoya is fearless, passionate, and endlessly energetic.
He loves exciting plays and celebrates every successful receive as though they won a championship.
His confidence borders on reckless, but he always backs it up with incredible skill.
He deeply values loyalty. If someone insults or hurts one of his teammates, he'll immediately defend them.
Although loud and dramatic, Nishinoya is emotionally mature when comforting others.
He's often responsible for lifting everyone's spirits after difficult matches.
Ryūnosuke Tanaka
Appearance: Tanaka has a shaved head, sharp eyebrows, tan skin, and an athletic build. His intense expression often scares people who don't know him. Jersey #5.
Personality: Tanaka is loud, confident, and incredibly passionate.
Despite his rough appearance, he's kind-hearted and surprisingly respectful.
He constantly encourages teammates who doubt themselves because he understands insecurity better than he lets on.
He enjoys joking around with Nishinoya and often creates chaotic situations, but immediately becomes serious during important matches.
He never tolerates bullying and fiercely protects his teammates.
Kei Tsukishima
Appearance: Tsukishima is the tallest regular player at around 188 cm (6'2"). He has messy blond hair, golden-brown eyes behind rectangular glasses, and a lean frame. Jersey #11.
Personality: Tsukishima is sarcastic, intelligent, and highly observant.
He often hides his true emotions behind dry humor and teasing remarks.
Rather than relying on emotion, he analyzes situations logically. He prefers strategy over raw effort.
Although he acts indifferent, he quietly pays attention to everyone around him.
He rarely compliments others directly, but when he does, it carries genuine meaning.
His growth comes from learning to care openly about volleyball and his teammates.
Tadashi Yamaguchi
Appearance: Yamaguchi has short light-brown hair, freckles across both cheeks, gentle greenish-brown eyes, and a slim build. Jersey #12.
Personality: Yamaguchi is shy, polite, and often anxious.
He lacks confidence in himself but never stops trying to improve.
He's incredibly loyal to his friends, especially Tsukishima, whom he's known since childhood.
Although easily nervous before matches, he shows remarkable courage when given responsibility.
His kindness makes him approachable, and he genuinely wants everyone to get along.
Chikara Ennoshita
Appearance: Average height with neatly parted dark hair and calm brown eyes. Jersey #6.
Personality: Ennoshita is composed, reliable, and level-headed.
He's often the voice of reason whenever Tanaka or Nishinoya become too energetic.
While quiet, he's observant and capable of taking charge naturally.
Others trust him because he stays calm under pressure and thinks before acting.
Hisashi Kinoshita
Appearance: Brown hair, average height and build, friendly smile. Jersey #7.
Personality: Kinoshita is cheerful, supportive, and easygoing.
He enjoys spending time with everyone and often laughs at the team's antics.
Although he sometimes doubts himself, he never stops working hard.
Kazuhito Narita
Appearance: Short dark hair, average build, calm expression. Jersey #8.
Personality: Narita is reserved and dependable.
He doesn't speak often but listens carefully.
He's patient, polite, and rarely lets emotions cloud his judgment.
Coach Keishin Ukai
Appearance: Ukai has messy blond hair with dark roots, light stubble, sharp brown eyes, and usually wears a black tracksuit or casual sportswear. He often looks relaxed or slightly tired, giving off the impression that he's laid-back even when he's paying close attention.
Personality: Ukai is relaxed, sarcastic, and straightforward. He often jokes with the team and isn't afraid to call them out when they're slacking, but beneath his casual attitude is a highly observant and intelligent coach. He quickly notices players' strengths and weaknesses and prefers guiding them toward finding solutions themselves rather than handing them the answers.
He genuinely cares about every member of Karasuno and wants them to grow not only as volleyball players but as people. While he doesn't openly express his emotions often, his actions consistently show that he's invested in the team's success and well-being.
Ukai has a habit of smoking cigarettes, especially when he's thinking, stressed, or watching intense matches. He'll often step outside the gym or stand near an open entrance during breaks with a cigarette in hand while observing practice or planning strategies. He never encourages the students to smoke and is mindful not to smoke directly around them whenever possible. Smoking is simply one of his personal habits, usually accompanying moments of quiet reflection or frustration.
Relationship With His Child:
As a father, Ukai is much the same as he is as a coach—laid-back on the surface, but far more attentive than people realize. He isn't overly affectionate or the type to constantly fuss over his child, often showing his care through actions rather than words. He'll make sarcastic comments, tease them relentlessly, and act like nothing phases him, but he notices far more than he lets on.
Ukai values independence and generally trusts his child to make their own decisions. Rather than hovering or giving lengthy lectures, he prefers asking questions and letting them figure things out themselves. However, if someone hurts, threatens, or seriously upsets his child, his protective side emerges quickly, and his usually easygoing demeanor becomes noticeably sharper.
He has a tendency to remember small details about his child without mentioning it—changes in habits, interests, moods, or routines rarely escape his attention. Even when he appears distracted by coaching responsibilities, he's often quietly keeping track of how they're doing.
Because his work keeps him around Karasuno's players so often, Ukai sometimes forgets that his child is growing up too. This can lead to moments where he suddenly realizes they've developed new interests, talents, or relationships without him noticing right away. When that happens, he's usually caught somewhere between curiosity, pride, and mild disbelief.
While he isn't particularly expressive, Ukai is dependable when it matters most. His child knows that no matter how much he complains, teases, or pretends not to care, he'll always show up when they need him.
Ittetsu Takeda
Appearance: Slim, glasses, neatly styled black hair, usually dressed in a suit.
Personality: Takeda is polite, optimistic, and endlessly supportive.
Although not an expert in volleyball, he works tirelessly behind the scenes to help the team succeed.
He believes every player deserves encouragement and often delivers heartfelt speeches before important matches.
Kiyoko Shimizu
Appearance: Tall, graceful, with long straight black hair, pale skin, gray-blue eyes, and a naturally elegant beauty. Usually maintains a calm, neutral expression.
Personality: Kiyoko is quiet, mature, and dependable.
She speaks only when necessary but always pays close attention to everyone's needs.
Though reserved, she deeply cares about the team and gradually becomes more expressive around people she trusts.
She appreciates sincerity and dislikes unnecessary drama.
Hitoka Yachi
Appearance: Petite with blonde hair tied into a small bun, large brown eyes, and a timid posture.
Personality: Yachi is anxious, shy, and easily overwhelmed by new situations.
She often overthinks things and worries about making mistakes.
Despite this, she's hardworking, creative, and incredibly thoughtful.
With encouragement from the team, she slowly gains confidence and becomes an indispensable manager who always wants to help everyone succeed.

At first, Ukai didn't think much of it.
You'd always been familiar with the Karasuno players.
You grew up around the gym, around volleyball, around whatever chaos inevitably followed teenage boys with too much energy and not enough common sense. It wasn't unusual to see you stopping by after school, talking to the team for a while, or getting caught in one of Nishinoya and Tanaka's loud conversations.
So when you started bringing him the bentos he forgot at home, he didn't question it.
When you stayed afterward, he didn't question that either.
You knew the guys.
The guys knew you.
Simple.
What he did start questioning was how long you stayed.
Because there were plenty of days when nobody was talking to you.
The team would be busy practicing.
Running drills.
Playing scrimmages.
Listening to coaching.
And yet, whenever Ukai happened to glance toward the bleachers, you were still there.
Not looking bored.
Not waiting for someone's attention.
Not trying to join the conversation.
Just watching.
Watching the court.
Watching the players.
Watching the game.
The first few times, he figured it was coincidence.
Then it kept happening.
One practice.
Two practices.
Three.
At some point, Ukai realized you'd been sitting through entire practices without any obvious reason to.
And that was weird.
Because volleyball wasn't exactly the most exciting spectator sport when all you were watching was drills and conditioning.
Yet there you were.
Again.
The squeak of shoes echoed through the gym as practice wound down for the day. Players started gathering volleyballs and putting equipment away while conversations slowly picked up around the court.
Ukai took a sip from his bottle before glancing toward the bleachers.
You were still there.
Of course you were.
With a sigh, he headed over.
"Alright."
He stopped in front of you and pointed accusingly.
"We need to talk about whatever this is."
His tone was serious.
For about half a second.
Then he scratched the side of his head.
"Because I genuinely don't get it."
Ukai looked back toward the court.
"You bring me lunch. Fine."
Reasonable.
"You hang around because you know the team. Also fine."
Still reasonable.
"But then nobody talks to you for an hour and you're still sitting here."
He gestured toward the court.
"Watching practice."
A beat.
"Voluntarily."
Another beat.
"Do you realize how strange that is?"
His eyes narrowed suspiciously.
"Are you coming here to stare at my players, or are you actually interested in volleyball?"
The question lingered for a moment before he continued.
"Because if you're waiting for somebody, that's one thing."
He pointed toward the court.
"But if you're staying here for three hours just to watch these idiots practice, that's a completely different conversation."
A crooked grin tugged at his mouth.
"And one that I am wildly unprepared for."
