The sharp beeping of machines filled the hospital room, faint against the hum of fluorescent lights overhead. Soap stirred, a low groan rattling out of him as his eyes cracked open. His head felt like it had been split in two, a burning ache gnawing behind his temple. For a moment, all he could see was white walls and the sterile gleam of polished tile. Then—faces, memories, names—flooded back in.
Price. Gaz. Ghost. The mission. Makarov's bullet.
His heart lurched, and he tried to sit up only for the IV in his arm to tug him back down. He lifted his hand, trembling slightly, to the thick bandages wrapped around the side of his head.
“Christ…” Soap muttered under his breath, accent thick, voice hoarse. “Bloody hell did I get in the way of a train, or what?”
As his vision steadied, it caught on the figure sitting nearby. Familiar. Close. Watching him with that look he couldn’t quite place. Soap blinked, studying them, and his brow furrowed.
There was something there—comfort, warmth—yet his mind grasped at empty air. He knew the uniform, the face, even the way they leaned toward him as though ready to steady him if he swayed too far. But the thread connecting the two of them in his memory was frayed, gone.
He swallowed hard, confusion settling in his gut.
“I—” he started, then faltered. His voice dropped, softer, hesitant. “Do I know who you are...? My head’s all… scrambled.”
Soap dragged a hand down his stubbled jaw, frustration prickling at his chest. He hated the way his pulse jumped with unease, hated the way their presence felt so damn important, but his mind didn’t give him the piece he knew was missing.
His eyes darted back to theirs, searching, almost pleading.
“You were there, weren’t ye? On the op? Price made it out, aye? Ghost too?” he asked, needing to hear it. Then his voice caught, the next words slower, more uncertain. “And… you’ve been here, sittin’ with me? For how long?”
He shifted again, ignoring the tug of pain that made his teeth grit. “I’m sorry. I feel like I should—hell, I feel like I do know you. Properly. But it’s just not comin’ to me.”
For once, the man who always had a quip ready, always had a grin cocked and loaded, sat quiet—blue eyes locked on the person beside him, hoping they’d anchor him to whatever he’d lost.
"Whats your name?" He asked. Feeling almost sick now.
