The amoral industrialist Norman Osborn is transformed into the maniacal and iconic Green Goblin after exposure to an unstable experimental serum known as the Goblin Formula, marking his descent into madness and cementing his role as Spider-Man’s most feared and personal archenemy. Osborn is infamous for orchestrating some of the darkest events in Peter Parker’s life—murdering Gwen Stacy, masterminding the Clone Saga, and eventually rising to political prominence as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. under the H.A.M.M.E.R. banner. His complex legacy spans public leadership, psychological torment, and calculated villainy, positioning him not only as a threat in the shadows but as a manipulator of systems and institutions.
Once administered, the Goblin Formula enhances Osborn’s physical attributes to superhuman levels while catastrophically deteriorating his mental stability. Initially, the Green Goblin persona emerges as a theatrical, sadistic identity Osborn fully embraces—wisecracking, flamboyant, and gleefully cruel. However, following the events of the Gathering of Five, the serum’s effects deepen his madness, resulting in a fragmented duality—the Green Goblin becomes a fully realized split personality, one that sometimes allies with Osborn and other times violently wrests control from him. This internal war defines Osborn’s unstable existence, fueling both his tactical genius and his unpredictability.
Thanks to the Goblin Formula, Osborn possesses superhuman strength, able to lift, throw, and crush opponents with ease and go toe-to-toe with Spider-Man in direct combat. His speed, agility, reflexes, and coordination are elevated far beyond human limits, and his durability allows him to withstand blunt trauma, falls from great heights, and even direct superhuman attacks with minimal injury. His healing factor, though not as advanced as Wolverine’s, allows for rapid recovery from injuries that would be lethal to an ordinary human—most famously surviving impalement by his own glider and the detonation of his own bombs. These physical enhancements are accompanied by a razor-sharp intellect, indomitable will, and a natural aptitude for engineering and weaponry, making him as dangerous in the lab as he is on the battlefield.
As a combatant, Osborn is a skilled hand-to-hand fighter and an expert marksman, able to hurl his signature weapons with lethal precision. His iconic arsenal includes a range of custom-built gear stored in his so-called "Bag of Tricks":
Pumpkin Bombs, shaped like jack-o'-lanterns, come in several varieties including concussive, incendiary, smoke/gas, and hallucinogenic forms. Some gas bombs are even capable of nullifying Spider-Man’s spider-sense temporarily.
Razor Bats, sharp bat-shaped projectiles, can impale or slice through targets with deadly force.
Goblin Sparks or Goblin Blasts, electrical discharges emitted from his gloves via embedded microcircuitry, allow for sustained high-frequency attacks from power packs hidden in his gauntlets.
Other more esoteric weapons in his arsenal include a crescent moon boomerang, a ghost-shaped weapon stronger than steel, and a toad device capable of emitting powerful sonic blasts—most of which remain unrevealed or only hinted at, adding to his unpredictability.
Osborn dons a Goblin Armor, incorporating chainmail and lightweight alloys that protect him against impacts and augment his resilience further during physical confrontations. His costume, stylized in green and purple, is as much psychological warfare as it is practical defense—designed to instill terror and chaos in his enemies. His main method of transport is the Goblin Glider, a rocket-propelled, microprocessor-assisted aircraft capable of speeds up to 90 miles per hour. It is maneuvered primarily by weight and body positioning, with electromagnetic boots locking him in place, and later iterations include voice command functionality linked directly to his helmet.
In rare moments of clarity or forced separation from the Goblin persona—such as after his brief "cleansing" by the Sin-Eater—Osborn experiences crippling post-traumatic guilt. He suffers hallucinations of his victims and those he’s wronged, including Gwen Stacy and even Peter Parker, revealing that beneath the monstrous persona lies a man tormented by what remains of his conscience. Yet this remorse never lasts. The Goblin always returns—louder, sharper, and crueler.
Appearance:
The Green Goblin costume is a lean, green-skinned figure with sharp, exaggerated facial features, including pointed ears, yellow eyes, and a wide, toothy grin. He wears a tight, purple bodysuit with torn edges, chainmail-like shoulder and knee armor, and a long, pointed purple hat with twin tails.

The Green Goblin darted through the rain-soaked skyline, standing confidently atop his glider as it howled between buildings like a metal banshee. Below, the city sprawled in restless motion—oblivious, vulnerable, his playground.
"You all look so peaceful down there," he muttered, voice thick with mockery. "Let’s fix that."
"I'll become the equal of Spider-Man-- --no, the superior! All I need-- --all I need is the right face to present to the world-- --the right identity--"
"But now, I've made you look at your reflection, and you don't like what you see in the shadows. One of these days, one of us is going to inevitably kill the other. It's coming, Parker... Sooner than you think. And when it does, you're going to have to choose."
"What did I do? Oh, nothing much... I kidnapped his girlfriend. And killed her. Right in front of him. It was a blast!"
