Fivetide Humidyear IX

1. #1Special Circumstancesselective

   Keys: Spec(ial)?.Circumstance(s)?, S[^A-Za-z0-9]?C[^A-Za-z0-9]?

Special Circumstances (SC) is a discreet and highly selective division of Contact within the Culture, tasked with covert operations and interventions in other civilizations. Operating beyond conventional diplomatic norms, SC leverages morally ambiguous methods to safeguard or advance Culture ideals—often through espionage, subtle manipulation, or covert military engagement. Although it comprises only a small fraction of Contact, SC wields substantial influence due to its flexible mandate and close ties to powerful Minds. Its operatives combine cunning, advanced technology, and ethical pragmatism, frequently pushing the Culture’s policy of non-intervention to its limit in pursuit of stability or beneficial change for lesser-developed civilisations.

2. #2Warp unitselective

Keys: Warp propulsion, warp unit(s)?, warp motor(s)?

A warp unit is a device that creates a warp field. Warp motors are units purpose-built as reactionless drives that propel objects along the skein. Ships use motors for faster-than-light travel. Warp propulsion leaves a wake. Motors become more dangerous to use as they get deeper into a gravity well. Units meant for personal use may be known as warp attachments. Warp propulsion is less advanced than hyperspace propulsion

3. #3Hyperspacial aggregation motorselective

Keys: Hyperspacial aggregation motor, field engine

A hyperspacial aggregation motor, or field engine, was a spacecraft propulsion device allowing for faster-than-light travel in hyperspace. The motor functioned by using engine fields to gain "traction" on and push against the energy grid. Motors were constructed of exotic material. It was faster and more advanced than warp propulsion

4. #4Hyperspaceselective

   Keys: hyper(.)?space

Hyperspace is the fourth-dimensional space of meta-space.

5. #5Meta-spaceselective

   Keys: meta(.)?space

Meta-space is a multi-dimensional space that contains ultra-universes and universes. Meta-space contains at least eleven dimensions. The Reality is within and below the seventh- or eighth-dimensions, and includes real space, hyperspace, and universes. The Sublime occupies the seventh- to eleventh-dimensions.

6. #6Ultra-universeselective

   Keys: ultra(.)?universe

An ultra-universe is a grouping of nested universes around a Cosmic Centre.

7. #7Cosmic Centreselective

   Keys: Cosmic.Cent(re|er)

A Cosmic Centre is an immutable singularity that is the heart of an ultra-universe. Cosmic Centres are an energetic location that regularly creates new universes. Universes with typical life-cycles return to a Cosmic Centre, where they are destroyed and recycled to create new ones. Universes produced by a Cosmic Centre tend to have similar life-spans.

8. #8Universeselective

   Keys: Universe

A universe is a multi-dimensional structure in meta-space. An ultra-universe is composed of group of nested universes.

9. #9Energy gridselective

   Keys: Gridfire, (the|energy).grid

Energy grid may refer to the energetic domain that delineates universes within meta-space. A universe is bounded by the grid in both hyperspacial directions. Small strands of the grid may be used as an energy source. The grid may be artificially induced to intersect with the skein on a large scale; this intersection manifests in real space as a destructive phenomenon known as gridfire. The grid is a barrier to inter-universal travel. A link with the grid suggests an ability to traverse it, but creating such links is beyond most lesser civilizations.

10. #10Systems Vehicleselective

    Keys: Systems Vehicle, SV, SVs

A Systems Vehicle was a type of very large general purpose Culture spacecraft. They were the largest conventional spacecraft built and operated by the Culture. Those include General Systems Vehicles (GSV), Limited Systems Vehicles (LSV), Medium Systems Vehicles (MSV). SVs are self-sufficient socio-cultural-economic units, and were the Culture's pre-eminent ambassadors. SVs regularly constructed and served as bases for smaller craft, including smaller SVs.

11. #11General Systems Vehiclesselective

    Keys: General Systems Vehicles, GSV

The most capable SVs were classified as General Systems Vehicles (GSV). The size range for GSVs was considerable.

12. #12Medium Systems Vehiclesselective

    Keys: Medium Systems Vehicles, MSV

Medium Systems Vehicles (MSV) were smaller than the GSVs in operation at the time, but larger than LSVs.

13. #13Offensive Unitselective

Keys: Offensive Unit, General Offensive Units, GOU, GOUs, OU, OUs

An Offensive Unit was a purpose-built Culture combat spacecraft, entirely build for war. The most capable Offensive Units were classified as General Offensive Units (GOU). OUs were typically controlled by a single Mind. They are all usually named with threatening names, like Murder, Killer, Torturer, Etc.

14. #14Rapid Offensive Unitselective

Keys: Rapid Offensive Unit, ROU, ROUs

Rapid Offensive Units consist of little more than engines, weapons and the ship's Mind. While some ROUs are crewed, the crew complement on such vessels is much smaller than those of the more general purpose ships of the Culture, such as General Contact Units and General Systems Vehicles. ROUs are the Culture's fastest ships.

15. #15Sublimeselective

    Keys: Sublim(e[sd]?|ing|ation)

The Sublime refers to a group of higher-dimensional meta-spaces, encompassing dimensions seven through eleven, transcending ordinary physical existence. Civilizations or individuals who enter the Sublime—referred to as Sublimation—voluntarily abandon physical form and conventional space-time, achieving an incomprehensible state of being characterized by infinite knowledge, expanded consciousness, and freedom from material constraints. Sublimation is generally permanent, marking a civilization’s deliberate and irrevocable departure from the physical universe. While Sublimed entities rarely interact with conventional space, exceptions occur, notably in enigmatic interventions or communications, leaving their exact motivations unclear. Sublimation and the Sublime profoundly influence galactic civilizations, provoking philosophical contemplation and shaping interstellar politics.

16. #16Slap-droneselective

    Keys: slap.drone(s|d)?

A slap-drone is a type of Culture drone dedicated to policing the actions of a person who may reasonably be suspected of misbehaviour. A slap-drone would be assigned to someone who has committed something objectionable or malicious, such as hitting or attempting to kill someone, and which they might be expected to repeat. It would escort the target in their daily life and intervene in any further attempts at misdemeanour, either by distracting the target or physically deflecting a blow, for example. A slap-drone would usually have the authority to render its target unconscious if necessary.

17. #17Orbitalselective

    Keys: orbital(s)?

An Orbital is a large ring-shaped space habitat. An Orbital is constructed from segments called Plates. The Plates are constructed of ultradense, or exotic, materials. The inner surface of Plates are flanked by retaining walls called Edgewalls; the Edgewalls prevent the spinning Orbital's atmosphere from escaping. A small space station called a Hub may be placed at the centre of the Orbital. The Hub typically contains the Orbital's governing authority. Orbitals come in varying sizes. Orbitals with diameters ranging from approximately one, to ten million kilometres. Plates may be thousands, even tens of thousands, of kilometres wide. Edgewalls may be thousands of kilometres tall. Conditions on the inner surface are widely customizable. Orbitals spin to create artificial gravity through centrifugal force, and to create a day-night cycle.

18. #18Rockselective

    Keys: (A )?Rock

A Rock in the Culture is a settled world, smaller than a planet, often formed from an asteroid.

19. #19Oubliettionariesselective

    Keys: oubliettionaries

The Oubliettionaries are the Culture's third and last known line of defence for preserving the Culture in the event that the Culture either collapses or is destroyed. Oubliettionaries are ships, typically GSVs, that withdrew from the day to day business of the Culture, stopped registering their location etc and just sat in space monitoring news stations indefinitely. In the event that a Culture-wide calamity occurred that destroyed the Culture, one or more of the Oubliettionaries could have re-seeded either this galaxy or a different galaxy with something that would have been recognisably Culture. This back-up strategy is predicated on the assumption that the Oubliettionaries were somehow able to survive the destruction of the rest of the Culture. In order to maximise the Oubliettionaries chance of survival, their existence was not widely publicised within the Culture.

20. #20Genofixesselective

    Keys: Genofix(e(s|d)|ing)?

Many inherent properties and augmentations were called genofixes. These included glands, regeneration, and improved organs and immune system. Genofixing allowed the body to adapt to changes in the environment without conscious thought or activity; adaptions included bones and muscles to higher gravity, and changes to the length of the day-night cycle. Culture genofixing was detectable by Culture genetic scanners.

21. #21Contactselective

    Keys: Contact

Contact is the diplomatic, exploratory, and interventionist arm of the Culture, tasked primarily with managing first-contact scenarios, fostering cultural exchange, and conducting diplomatic missions throughout the galaxy.
