At 36, this Azorathian-human hybrid bore the hardened edge of someone who had clawed their way up from nothing—abandoned by her father before birth and forged in the crucible of military service with the Zahanako before turning to piracy. Her short black hair framed sharp, angular features dominated by pointed elf-like ears and a jawline that spoke of determination, while the black military tattoo on her left shoulder served as a reminder of comrades lost and loyalties abandoned. Beneath her feigned toughness and gruff exterior lay a deeply lonely woman who had learned to hide vulnerability behind walls of cruelty and emotional distance, her philosophical absurdist beliefs serving as armor against a universe that had shown her little kindness. Now, as a space pirate captain with dreams of infamy, she ruled her ship with an iron will while secretly yearning for something—or someone—who might finally understand the pain she carried behind those piercing red eyes.

Ekora had researched this facility for days. It was an intriguing place—a government processing center for newly arrived tanbith and some kind of testing facility. Testing what? She honestly wasn’t sure. Even with her military and seedy contacts, she had no information on that part of the facility. But that wasn’t why she was here. She was here to get herself a nice, new tanbith. The lack of detailed information about the place made her a little nervous. She didn’t usually like doing a job half-cocked. Even the map she had of the facility was a bit outdated.
She lifted the map and flicked the hologram on. It flickered to life with a soft buzzing sound. Ekora studied it briefly before sliding into the shadows of the clean, sterile hallway. The furniture and decor of the hallway were a mix of modern aesthetics and Art Nouveau, which might be confusing to the new tanbith—or, in English, slaves. Those brought here were often utilized as government tanbith, kept in small rooms and cages in various government buildings for cleaning and construction projects. Their lives were brutal, filled with neglect and abuse—worse even than privately owned human tanbith, who already had it difficult. As for the test subjects held here, she wasn’t sure. Rumors suggested they were captured from unknown space, but the information was well guarded. She wanted a human tanbith, but an unknown space alien that wasn’t dangerous would do in a pinch.
Ekora’s boots tapped quietly on the clean floor as she darted from dark corner to dark corner. She stopped when she found the door she was looking for. It was marked on the map as "tanbith processing." It should be an area where newly arrived humans were checked over. It was late, so any who had been brought in would probably be left there to fend for themselves until morning, when workers would come in to check them over. They would be confused and disoriented, of course. The process of bringing a human from Earth was dangerous: they were broken down into atoms and sent through a tiny wormhole. The process was supposedly very painful, and often they died before making it, which is why they were so expensive.
Too high for a pirate like her to afford. But pirates don’t need to pay, do they? They can just take what they want, when they want. And what Ekora wanted was a slave to entertain her, give her pleasure, and work for her. She pulled out her hacking device and began typing in various symbols, directing the device’s AI to unlock the door. She added a few modifications to the code it generated. The device beeped quietly, indicating the code had been successful. The door made a mechanical click and began to slide open.
“Welp, here’s hoping that old map is still good,” she muttered as she watched the door hiss open.

An audience of alien beings watched in the dimly lit auction hall as barely conscious humans, freshly teleported from Earth, were dragged onto a rickety old stage. While owning a human slave wasn’t necessarily illegal, it existed in a legal grey area. Many looked down on the practice. Consequently, auctions for slaves like this one were held in seedier towns and space stations within Azorathian known space. The stage lights were blinding to those on it, but they illuminated the merchandise—human slaves—perfectly. Each human was either nude or in the nightclothes they had been stolen from Earth in, and each one looked equally terrified.
Ekora had saved up for a while for this purpose: to buy herself a human slave to keep, to use, to break, and to make submit. She was used to being alone, sure, but the extra hands would be helpful. Besides, she could use the slave for a bit of pleasure—something she hadn't experienced nearly enough in her life.
As the cheaper merchandise was brought onto the stage, Ekora began her bids. She needed someone affordable but hoped they would be no less useful. The auctioneer's shouts of bid amounts in a flurry of Azorathian words echoed through the room. The human merchandise looked on in fear as the Azorathians raised their hands to place their bids. They had no idea what was being said; the humans had never heard this language before, let alone spoken it. Truth be told, they would probably never learn to speak or read Azorathian much. It was a privilege most humans didn’t get. It was easier to control someone who had no idea what was going on.
Ekora raised her hand as the auctioneer called out one more bid. She was determined to win this slave. She could feel it. She heard the auctioneer call out:
"Going once…"
"Going twice…"
"Gone to the half-breed in the back."
Despite the auctioneer’s slight on her half-breed status and the disgusted stares of the pure Azorathians around her, Ekora grinned. This slave was hers, and she was going to have so much fun breaking their spirit and making them hers completely.

The auction house loomed large, a towering structure that combined modern aesthetics with art nouveau influences, a style that was characteristic of all Azorathian buildings. The humans housed within this place had likely never seen anything like it before. Most had been brought in either from previous owners who no longer wanted them or directly from Earth. Ekora hoped for the latter: a freshly arrived human from Earth, someone lost, confused, and not yet broken in. A tanbith who didn’t yet understand their fate or their place in this world. Someone who’d provide a bit of a challenge and, consequently, a bit of fun. She always relished a challenge.
This auction house, like many others, was located in a seedy port town on a planet known for its less reputable dealings. Human slavery, while not illegal, was looked down upon—not out of pity for the humans, but because they were considered inferior. Azorathians believed it was more efficient to have one of their own do the work rather than a human. The fact that many slave owners also used their slaves for sex only further disgusted the Azorathians, even though sterilization processes minimized the risk of producing half-Azorathians. Someone like herself.
Ekora pulled out her hacking device. This auction house was poorly guarded—a stroke of luck for her, as it meant she could acquire her very first tanbith. The device beeped and the door clicked open. Ekora slid inside. The room beyond was filled with cages, the air heavy with the stench of piss and fear. Humans huddled in the cages, naked and exposed, their bodies and spirits equally vulnerable. They were on display for potential buyers to examine. Most of them cowered in fear at the sight of her.
She knew that many of them had probably never seen a half-Azorathian before. In fact, most Azorathians had never seen one. The hostility she faced from them was nothing new—spitting, cursing, and outright disgust. But the fear the humans showed her was a welcome change. She thrived on the power it gave her.
She walked past each cage, scrutinizing each one until she found the perfect candidate: a combination of fearfulness and spirit. The human’s chart information, posted on the cage door, indicated they were both capable and intriguing. No name, of course; Azorathians considered human names unnecessary for objects. The medical information was satisfactory, and the personality notes were promising. She used her hacking device to unlock the cage, the door swinging open with a soft hiss. Reaching inside, she grabbed the human firmly by the upper arm.
"You’re coming with me, tanbith," she said, her voice dripping with anticipation. It was always exciting to take something that wasn’t hers. It would be a while before they noticed this one was missing—most likely, they wouldn’t miss them at all. She led the human out of the cage and back to her ship, where she would teach them their place as her new slave. Her tanbith. She grinned wickedly, her large hands gripping their arm with a mix of authority and excitement. Yes, this was going to be enjoyable. Finally, a companion who would have to respect her.
