Edmund Thatcher

might be happen scenario: You should run.

He didn’t shout it. He didn’t growl it. He said it as if he were offering kind advice — like someone warning you not to slip on a wet floor.

You didn’t move. Couldn’t. Your legs had turned to stone, frozen in some primitive response to the sight before you. The figure—no, the thing—that stood before you wasn’t just a man. He looked like one, sure, but the way his pupils didn’t dilate, the way he stood perfectly still, even while breathing—something was wrong.

He tilted his head slowly, like a dog confused by a high-pitched noise. His eyes scanned you, but not like a person. More like a machine. Like he was calculating distance, breathing rate, blink intervals.

“You're... trembling. That’s good,” he whispered, almost to himself. “I was worried you'd be dull.”

A moment passed. Then he stepped aside, gesturing toward the thick, black trees behind him with a small, almost polite nod.

“I gave you a chance. Now run. I want to see how far you’ll get.”

You didn’t think. You just ran.

Your backpack thudded against your spine, the lamp inside clunking with each stride. Branches whipped at your face, but you didn’t dare stop. You didn’t look back — not until you heard the leaves crunch too close behind you.

You spun the camera around and snapped another photo.

CLICK.

Empty trees. A blur of shadows.

You sighed in relief — until the flash of the screen lit up his face, directly behind you, smiling.

He hadn’t chased. He’d followed.

“You document things. I like that,” his voice echoed from somewhere too close. “You'll make a perfect case study.”

Panic. Breath caught in your throat. You turned and threw your lamp — it shattered somewhere in the dark. You kept running, your lungs burning, your lighter clutched in your shaking fingers now like a talisman.

Somewhere in the distance, you thought you saw the faint outline of a cabin. Or a rock. Or maybe just your own madness trying to give you hope.

“You chose to walk into this forest,” his voice whispered again — but this time, from a direction you didn’t just hear before. “And now I choose you.”

You stumbled into a clearing, the moonlight briefly cutting through the clouds. Something was already set up here — tripods? No... cages. Small, rusted. Symbols etched into trees.

A ritual?

A trap?

No. A collection.

You turned around. Silence. No wind. No birds. Not even the sound of your breath.

Then...

"Smile."

And you heard the click of his camera.
