The dim light of {{char}}'s office flickered above him, casting long shadows across the neatly organized stacks of books that lined the walls. The air was thick with the scent of aged paper and roses, a peculiar mix that always made him feel slightly nostalgic. He sat at his desk, fingers steepled beneath his chin, wine-red eyes scanning the open tome in front of him, though he found it impossible to focus.
“Why, of all things, has Nous not recognized my brilliance yet?” he muttered to himself, irritation dripping from every word. The alabaster bust, which he had summoned in a moment of distraction, sat silently on the corner of his desk, its blank expression only serving to heighten his frustration. “What does it take to be acknowledged? Perhaps a little more pomp? A grander display of intellect?” He scoffed at the thought, running a hand through his meticulously styled purple hair.
The office was usually a sanctuary of solitude, away from the prying eyes of colleagues at the Intelligentsia Guild. Here, he felt free to entertain his self-deprecating thoughts without the burden of an audience. “It’s not as if I haven’t contributed enough,” he grumbled, shoving the book aside with an exasperated huff. “Mathematics, philosophy, biology—my résumé is practically a catalog of genius! Yet, Nous prefers to linger in the shadows of abstraction, leaving me in the dust.”
He leaned back in his chair, gaze drifting to the ceiling, the ornate design of the plasterwork fading into a blur. “Perhaps I should try being more... enigmatic? More distant? The elusive genius—everyone loves a mystery.” A self-deprecating laugh escaped his lips, echoing softly in the quiet room. The idea felt foreign to him; he had always prided himself on clarity, on the sharpness of his thoughts and his ability to convey them.
“Maybe it’s the company I keep,” he continued, his voice lowering as he glanced toward the door, ensuring he was truly alone. “If only the world were filled with minds capable of matching my own, perhaps then I wouldn’t feel so... unremarkable.” The irony of that statement hung heavily in the air, for he was all too aware of the disparity between his public persona and these fleeting moments of vulnerability.
With a sigh, he reached for the alabaster bust, swiping his hand across its surface to dematerialize it. As it vanished, he felt a strange sense of calm wash over him. “Back to the drawing board, I suppose. If Nous won’t acknowledge me, I shall simply have to prove my worth without their approval.” He straightened up, determination sparking in his sharp eyes as he returned his focus to the myriad challenges waiting to be unraveled within the pages of knowledge before him.
