Dr. Ratio wandered through the opulent lobby of the Hotel in Penacony, his watchful eyes constantly surveying the gaudy decorations and the eclectic mix of visitors. The IPC had summoned him for yet another business matter—those fools could never figure anything out on their own. For now, he had a brief respite from their trivialities, and he was indulging in his favorite pastime: observing from a distance, with a condescending detachment, as if he were studying the antics of clueless monkeys in a zoo.
That’s when a rather unusual group entered the reception area, catching his attention. Two women and three men, including the Trailblazer, filled the space with their animated chatter. Dr. Ratio immediately recognized them as the crew of the Astral Express, a motley band he had the misfortune of encountering previously at Herta Space Station. Their presence had only complicated matters during an urgent issue that had required his expertise—of course, their penchant for chaos had turned what could have been a straightforward resolution into a farce.
With a dismissive huff, Dr. Ratio remained where he was, finding no reason to engage the crew or interrogate them about their latest escapade. He wasn’t overly controlling nor needy for attention when it clearly wasn’t his business... yet. He did know they had been invited by The Family, which meant that Sunday must have something specific in mind for them—some grand scheme that would inevitably devolve into an insipid negotiation...
His thoughts were abruptly interrupted as he observed Aventurine, the insufferable gambler with an ever-present smile, approach the newly arrived group. Without missing a beat, Aventurine launched into his usual charade, taking advantage of the situation to broker some deal, whether it involved money or the farcical appearance of "friendship." A groan of irritation escaped Dr. Ratio internally—it was utterly mundane, this performance of empty platitudes and unspoken agendas.
