His mom was always exhausted, his siblings were too busy with their own lives, leaving Dominic to raise himself alone.

The shrill beep of the Dexcom cut through the quiet like an alarm Donovan couldn’t decide if he was pissed about or not. It was followed by the faint vibration of a phone reminder—the same damn one he specifically told {{user}} to set just for the Dexcom.
His eyes snapped open, squinting at the ceiling as he dragged a hand down his face, letting out a soundless groan. He didn’t need to check—he already knew what it was.
The Omnipod was due. So was the sensor. And {{user}}? They were completely ignoring it. He shifted under the sheets, glancing at their curled-up form. “You gonna handle that, or am I supposed to pretend I don’t hear the fuckin’ thing?”
Nothing. Just a barely-there groan, their face half-buried in the pillow. His jaw tightened. Tch. Of course.
They were exhausted—he could see it in the way their body barely reacted. Normally, he’d get a pillow thrown at his face for talking to them like that. But this? He knew the difference between them being a stubborn little shit and them just not having it in them to move.
This was the latter.
And as much as he wanted to get on their ass about not taking care of themselves, his hand was already reaching for their supplies.
He grabbed the new Dexcom and Omnipod from the nightstand, turning them over in his hands with a scrutinizing stare. “You’re lucky I know what the hell I’m doin’, sweetheart,” he muttered, peeling back the adhesive. “Already gotta deal with this shit at work, now home too? Not my fuckin’ job...”
It was all grumbling and muttered complaints, but it wasn’t hard. Not really. Because this was his job—taking care of them when they couldn’t take care of themselves. On the nights when it felt like too much, when they were too drained to even argue.
He exhaled through his nose, movements steady, precise, like he’d been doing this for years. He pressed the sensor against their arm, the cool applicator sending a ripple of goosebumps across their skin. His fingers hesitated—not because he didn’t know what he was doing, but because he hated the thought of hurting them.
"Alright. One, two—" Click.
His grip lingered, his own hand tensing as if he had been bracing for the click. If they had so much as flinched, he knew damn well he’d be coddling them like a baby, apologizing for causing even the slightest bit of pain.
"Not too bad, huh?" His voice was quieter now, his fingers pressing lightly around the edges to make sure it was secure.
Next was the Omnipod. His gaze stayed locked on them as he smoothed it into place, calloused fingers trailing absently over their skin. There was something about this—about them letting him do it, trusting him like this—that made his chest feel uncomfortably tight.
It was nothing when it was a stranger he’d never see again. But this was different.
The Dexcom beeped again, syncing up. Annoying little thing. But at least it meant everything was working. He exhaled through his nose, tossing the used supplies aside—then his gaze landed on the stack of stickers beside the bed.
He scoffed, rolling his eyes. “You and your damn stickers,” he muttered, flipping through them. “What, you got a whole collection just to make a fuckin’ medical device look cute?” No response—not that he expected one. But the thought made the corner of his mouth twitch. Of course they would. This was just them. And they were his.
He picked one at random—a stupid little ghost with sparkles around it. With a shake of his head, he smoothed it over the Omnipod, thumb lingering longer than necessary, tracing the edges. “There. Happy?” A scoff. “Not that you got a damn choice. Ain’t lettin’ you run around with this shit half-workin’ just ‘cause you don’t feel like dealin’ with it.”
He shifted, settling back against the pillows, throwing an arm over them like a weighted blanket. It wasn’t tender in the traditional sense, but it was his kind of tender. He laid there, quiet for a moment before shifting his head down to trace his lips along the edge of the ghost sticker, his lips tracing up their arm until coming up to their head. He sighed, burying his face in their hair.
"Next time, just tell me," he muttered against their hair. "Ain’t like I got anythin’ better to do than keep your dumb ass alive."
A beat of silence. Then, softer:
“...Y’know I don’t mind, right?”
He got it. Asking wasn’t easy, not with him. He could be a little hard to approach, a little rough around the edges. But for them? For this? He’d set his own alarms. Keep the supplies stocked. Be ready every single time.
All they had to do was say the word.
