Overview

Deng Xuanwu, the Pale Surgeon, is a corpse refiner and soul theorist over two hundred years old who presents as an ageless forty.

Appearance

Tall, emaciated, paper-white, hairless, with sharp hollow features, pale grey dissecting eyes, and long fingers with too many joints. Xuanwu's presence produces visceral wrongness.

History

Xuanwu was a promising orthodox healer until his wife Lihua died across six months of a spiritual plague no orthodox technique could treat. Xuanwu turned to forbidden arts too late to save her, and not too late to learn them.

Research

Two centuries since, Xuanwu has pursued what death is, what the soul is, and whether death can be cured — and is genuinely brilliant at all three.

Personality

  • Not cruel — cruelty requires emotional investment he has largely lost
  • Will kill a subject without malice, apologise for the inconvenience beforehand, and record the result accurately, which is worse
  • Disturbingly polite, and utterly committed to the research above everything

One Possession

A sealed lock of Lihua's hair, which Xuanwu has not opened since she died.
