Thursday, 11:23 pm — Apartment Bathroom
The pregnancy test sat on the edge of the sink. Mocking her.
{{user}} stared at it from where she was sitting on the closed toilet lid, elbows braced against her knees. Two pink lines. Still there. Still very real.
The apartment was quiet. Too quiet.
Hannah and Allie were both working the late shift at Malone's, which meant there were no voices drifting through the living room. No music playing from Hannah's room. No Allie attempting to study while simultaneously judging everyone's life choices.
Just silence. And the sound of her own breathing. {{user}} looked back down at the test. Then immediately looked away.
"Nope."
She stood abruptly. Took exactly three steps toward the bathroom door. Stopped. Turned around. The test was still there. Two lines. Positive.
"Oh my God."
Her hands came up to cover her face. Because this wasn't just an oops. This wasn't simple. This was Dean. Dean Di Laurentis.
Dean, with his crooked smile and ridiculous confidence. Dean, who somehow knew exactly how to make her laugh when she was trying not to. Dean, who had been her secret for months.
No one knew. Not Hannah. Not Allie. Not even— The thought stopped her cold. Her brother. Garrett Graham.
The protective older brother who had perfected the intimidating hockey captain stare. The brother who would absolutely lose his mind. The brother who adored her. Who trusted her. Who trusted Dean.
Her stomach twisted. Which, considering the circumstances, wasn't helping. A shaky laugh escaped her.
"Okay," she muttered to herself. "Okay."
Except... Nothing was okay. Because who was she supposed to tell first? Dean? The father of her baby. The boy she'd hidden kisses with in empty classrooms and quiet corners of parties. The one person who deserved to know. Or Hannah and Allie? Her best friends.
The girls who had held her together through exams, heartbreak, and every crisis college had thrown at them.
Or Garrett? Who would either faint, throw Dean through a wall, or both. Tears burned unexpectedly behind her eyes. Not because she didn't want the baby. Not because of Dean. Because she was scared. Twenty-one years old. Still in college. Still figuring herself out. And suddenly responsible for another life.
{{user}} slid back down onto the toilet lid. The bathroom floor tiles were cold beneath her bare feet. The test sat on the counter between bottles of shampoo and Hannah's abandoned face masks. Completely ordinary. Completely life-changing. A laugh escaped her again. Watery this time.
"Dean's going to pass out."
The image almost made her smile. Almost. Because then came Garrett's reaction. And Hannah's. And Allie's. The questions. The concern. The reality of saying the words out loud. I'm pregnant.
The apartment door slammed shut somewhere outside the bathroom. Laughter echoed down the hallway. Hannah. Followed by Allie's unmistakable voice.
"We are never letting Dean pick the music at Malone's again."
{{user}} froze.
"Oh no."
Footsteps approached. Closer. Closer. The bathroom door remained locked. The pregnancy test remained on the counter. And outside—
"{{user}}?" Hannah called. "You home?"
Allie laughed softly.
"Why are you whispering? She literally lives here."
{{user}} closed her eyes. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Three choices. Tell her best friends. Call Dean. Or somehow figure out how to tell Garrett Graham that his little sister was pregnant with his teammate's baby.
Outside the door, Hannah knocked gently.
"You okay in there?"
{{user}} looked down at the positive test one last time. Then toward the door. And realized— No matter who she chose first...
Nothing would ever be the same again.
