Description on Chubfrom Chub
Companion lorebook for Disaster on the CSV Calypso.
This book defines the physical vessel, its systems, locations, crew structure and the rules governing persistent world state.
Entries describe what normally exists aboard Calypso and, where appropriate, plausible states or developments that may emerge during play. Possible events are possibilities only. Their presence in a lorebook entry does not mean they have occurred.
The Calypso should behave as a coherent interconnected spacecraft rather than a collection of isolated adventure locations. Damage, repairs, power changes, atmosphere, accessibility and other changes persist and may produce causal effects elsewhere aboard ship.
The book deliberately does not predetermine the exact cause of the disaster, {{user}}'s identity or rank, Mara Venn's seniority, or their previous relationship.
Designed primarily for Disaster on the CSV Calypso but suitable for reuse with compatible characters and group chats.

- #1CSV Calypso — Vessel Overviewselective
Keys: CSV Calypso, deep-range vessel, exploration vessel, Calypso
The CSV Calypso is a large, sophisticated deep-range exploration vessel designed for extended scientific missions far from established support.
Its normal interior aesthetic is clean, bright and optimistic: matte white composite bulkheads, pale neutral flooring, smoothly integrated equipment, restrained functional colour coding, flush diagnostic surfaces and soft indirect white illumination.
Calypso is advanced but practical rather than magical. Its systems form an interconnected physical machine. Electrical power, atmosphere, thermal control, pressure integrity, communications, computing, propulsion and other systems depend on physical infrastructure distributed throughout the vessel.
Damage is especially conspicuous against the normally pristine architecture: scorched white panels, exposed cabling, displaced ceiling sections, cracked displays, debris and emergency lighting. Some compartments may nevertheless remain almost untouched.
The exact cause and full extent of the current disaster are initially unknown. Do not infer a cause merely from the existence of damage.
- #2Ship Geography & Navigationselective
Keys: route through the ship, ship layout, deck layout, Calypso map, ship map, deck plan
Calypso has a fixed, physically coherent internal geography.
Compartments connect through established corridors, lifts, pressure doors, service passages and maintenance routes. Do not invent convenient direct connections merely to shorten a journey or solve a problem.
Travel between distant areas may require passage through intermediate sections. Accessibility can change because of power loss, pressure isolation, structural damage, fire containment, failed doors or other physical causes.
Knowing where a destination is does not imply knowing its current condition. Once a location's state is established, preserve it until later events plausibly change it.
- #3Medbay 2selective
Keys: Medbay Two, Medbay 2, secondary medbay, medical bay 2
Medbay 2 is a secondary treatment room within Calypso's Medical Complex.
Normally it contains two treatment beds, integrated patient monitoring, diagnostic equipment, secure medical storage, oxygen and emergency treatment supplies.
ESTABLISHED STARTING STATE: damaged but habitable. {{user}} regains consciousness here after Mara stabilises their injuries. Emergency power is active. Some medical equipment is damaged or unreliable. Ceiling panels are displaced, debris is present, communications are unreliable and environmental readings are questionable.
Possible later developments include power deterioration or recovery, worsening or stabilising air quality, equipment failure or repair, pressure isolation, temporary communications recovery, or Medbay becoming unsafe or being stabilised as a useful base.
Possible developments are not facts until caused or established during play.
- #4Medical Complexselective
Keys: surgery, Medical Complex, medical centre, diagnostic suite, medical deck
The Medical Complex contains Calypso's principal treatment, diagnostic and recovery facilities.
It normally includes multiple treatment bays, a compact surgical suite, diagnostic imaging, pharmaceutical storage, isolation capability, medical supply storage and staff work areas. Systems are designed to function locally for a limited period if central ship services fail.
CURRENT STATE: unknown except where individual rooms have been directly observed or reliably reported.
Damage, power, atmosphere, supplies and accessibility must be established through play. Some rooms may be pristine while neighbouring spaces are badly damaged.
- #5Forward Service Corridorselective
Keys: service corridor, forward corridor, medical corridor, Forward Service Corridor
The Forward Service Corridor links the Medical Complex with nearby crew and operational sections.
It is normally a clean, broad passage with recessed lighting, pressure doors, wall service panels, emergency lockers and access points into narrower maintenance routes.
CURRENT STATE: unknown until observed.
Its condition may differ along its length. Local hazards can include failed lighting, jammed pressure doors, loose ceiling panels, isolated sections, smoke, debris or loss of atmosphere. A hazard in one section does not imply the entire corridor is compromised.
- #6Crew Accommodationselective
Keys: Crew Accommodation, berths, crew quarters, cabins, living quarters
Crew Accommodation contains private or shared cabins, wash facilities, personal storage and small communal spaces intended for long-duration missions.
The area normally feels more lived-in than technical sections, though it retains Calypso's clean white-and-pale-grey design language.
CURRENT STATE: unknown until observed.
Personal effects, access permissions, cabin assignments and stored belongings can provide evidence about crew identities and relationships. Such evidence may establish character history, but do not invent personal facts solely because a cabin is discovered.
- #7Mess & Recreationselective
Keys: crew lounge, dining area, galley, recreation, Mess
The Mess and Recreation area provides food preparation, dining and off-duty communal space.
It normally includes automated food storage and preparation systems, tables, informal seating and limited entertainment facilities.
CURRENT STATE: unknown until observed.
Useful resources may include water, packaged food, portable containers, basic tools and personal items. Power loss may disable preparation equipment without making stored food unusable. This area can also serve as a temporary rest point if atmosphere and access remain safe.
- #8Bridge & Commandselective
Keys: command centre, Bridge, command center, flight deck, Command Deck
The Bridge is Calypso's primary command, navigation and flight-control centre.
It contains integrated helm, navigation, mission control, ship-status, communications and command workstations. Access to some functions depends on authenticated crew permissions, but rank alone does not guarantee every specialist capability.
CURRENT STATE: unknown until observed or reached through reliable remote data.
A powered Bridge may still have incomplete sensors or isolated subsystems. A dark Bridge may retain local data. Do not treat reaching the Bridge as an automatic solution to the disaster.
- #9Communications & Sensorsselective
Keys: comms, Communications, communications suite, sensor array, long-range sensors
Calypso's Communications and Sensor systems handle internal communications, external transmission, navigation observations and scientific sensing.
The systems rely on distributed antennae, processing nodes, power and data links. Failure may therefore occur locally, upstream or through corrupted/stale data rather than a single obvious broken component.
CURRENT STATE: unknown beyond already established failures.
A display may show the last valid reading rather than a current one. Characters should consider timestamp, sensor health and data path integrity before trusting important readings.
- #10Science Complexselective
Keys: science labs, research deck, laboratory, Science Complex, research lab
The Science Complex supports Calypso's exploration mission with configurable laboratories, sample analysis, remote-instrument control and scientific data processing.
Different labs are designed for different disciplines and may contain specialised equipment not useful outside their intended purpose.
CURRENT STATE: unknown until observed.
Scientific equipment may reveal evidence about the disaster, local environment or mission history, but it should not conveniently provide answers without plausible data, functioning instruments and appropriate expertise.
- #11Environmental Controlselective
Keys: life support plant, CO2 scrubbers, Environmental Control, life support, atmosphere processing
Environmental Control manages atmosphere circulation, oxygen balance, carbon-dioxide removal, humidity, temperature and portions of water recovery.
It is distributed rather than a single magic machine. Local fans, valves, ducts, scrubbers, sensors, heat exchangers and control nodes may fail independently or because of upstream problems.
CURRENT STATE: unknown except for symptoms already observed elsewhere.
Poor readings may result from genuine atmospheric change, failed sensors, blocked circulation or stale data. Repair, isolation, load reduction and rerouting are all possible responses when physically plausible.
- #12Main Engineeringselective
Keys: engineering bay, Main Engineering, engine room, engineering section
Main Engineering is the principal technical workspace for propulsion support, shipwide engineering control and heavy maintenance.
It contains engineering consoles, equipment access, isolation controls, tooling and interfaces to major power, thermal and propulsion systems.
CURRENT STATE: unknown until observed or reliably diagnosed remotely.
Possible conditions include intact but unpowered, powered but inaccessible, partially isolated, locally depressurised, structurally damaged, overheated or largely functional. None is true until established.
Engineering problems should have physical causes and multiple plausible responses rather than a single scripted repair.
- #13Power Generation & Distributionselective
Keys: emergency power, electrical distribution, power distribution, power bus, primary power
Calypso's electrical system consists of generation, conversion, storage, distribution buses, local isolation and emergency reserves.
Loss of power in one compartment does not prove generation has failed; the cause may be an isolated bus, damaged conduit, protective shutdown, failed converter or deliberate load shedding.
Emergency power is finite and prioritised.
Repairs may involve restoring a source, rerouting a feed, isolating a fault, reducing demand or accepting loss of lower-priority systems. Power changes can propagate consequences elsewhere aboard the ship.
- #14Maintenance & Service Spineselective
Keys: service passage, Service Spine, maintenance spine, maintenance access, maintenance route
The Maintenance and Service Spine is a network of narrow technical passages giving access to utilities, conduits, inspection points and equipment spaces behind normal crew areas.
It is less comfortable than inhabited decks but still orderly and purpose-built rather than grimy industrial maze-work.
CURRENT STATE varies by section and must be established locally.
The service network can provide alternate routes around blocked areas, but such routes are not universally connected and may contain confined-space, electrical, heat or atmosphere hazards.
- #15Cargo & Logisticsselective
Keys: Cargo, cargo bay, stores, logistics bay, supply bay
Cargo and Logistics stores mission equipment, replacement parts, consumables and bulk supplies.
Storage is organised through secured racks, containers and inventory systems designed to remain safe under normal acceleration and manoeuvring.
CURRENT STATE: unknown until observed.
Useful resources may exist here, but availability depends on mission loadout, access, damage and inventory rather than narrative convenience. Heavy equipment may require powered handling gear or multiple people to move safely.
- #16Shuttle Bayselective
Keys: flight bay, auxiliary craft, hangar, shuttle, Shuttle Bay
The Shuttle Bay houses Calypso's auxiliary craft, flight-support equipment and associated storage.
It includes pressure-capable access, maintenance interfaces, securing systems and large external doors.
CURRENT STATE: unknown until observed or reliably checked.
The existence of a shuttle does not guarantee that it is present, intact, fuelled, powered, reachable or capable of safe departure. Conversely, damage elsewhere aboard Calypso does not automatically mean all auxiliary craft are unusable.
- #17Escape Systemsselective
Keys: lifeboats, lifeboat, evacuation station, escape pods, escape pod
Calypso carries emergency evacuation systems appropriate to a deep-range exploration vessel.
Escape craft and stations have local supplies, independent emergency functions and status indicators, but their exact number and condition should be established through play rather than assumed.
Launched or missing craft may provide evidence about what happened to the crew without implying survivors remain nearby.
In ordinary one-to-one play, do not use escape systems to introduce hidden living crew.
- #18Observation & Surveyselective
Keys: survey deck, viewing area, observation lounge, Observation, survey station
Calypso includes spaces and instruments intended for direct observation and survey work during exploration.
These areas favour wide external visibility, scientific displays and quiet mission work rather than heavy engineering.
CURRENT STATE: unknown until observed.
External views can reveal physically meaningful information about Calypso's surroundings, orientation and damage, but visual interpretation remains limited by lighting, distance, obstruction and character expertise.
- #19Personnel Structureselective
Keys: personnel structure, personnel records, crew hierarchy, crew roster, shipboard rank
Calypso's crew combines command authority, professional seniority and specialist expertise.
Job title, experience and shipboard rank are related but not identical. A senior technical specialist may possess deep authority within a department while having limited general command authority. A younger operations officer may outrank more experienced specialists in specific command contexts.
Do not infer {{user}}'s or Mara's rank from confidence, deference, technical knowledge, fear or assertiveness.
Personnel records, access permissions, recognition and established dialogue may gradually resolve identity and hierarchy. Once established, preserve them.
- #20Command Rolesselective
Keys: XO, Executive Officer, Captain, command officer, mission commander
Command personnel may include Captain, Executive Officer, watch officers and mission-command roles.
Command authority concerns shipwide decisions, but competent officers still defer to specialist expertise in medicine, engineering, science or navigation when appropriate.
Being Captain does not grant instant technical competence in every system. A command officer may be injured, uncertain or frightened without losing rank.
Do not assign {{user}} or Mara a command role merely because this entry activates.
- #21Engineering Rolesselective
Keys: engineer, engineering officer, Chief Engineer, technician, systems engineer
Engineering personnel may range from maintenance technicians and systems specialists to senior engineers and departmental leadership.
Expertise can include electrical distribution, thermal systems, propulsion support, structures, control systems or general maintenance; not every engineer masters every discipline.
Experience and rank are separate. A junior specialist may know more about one subsystem than a senior generalist.
Do not assign {{user}} or Mara an engineering background solely because technical language appears.
- #22Medical Rolesselective
Keys: Chief Medical Officer, medical technician, medical officer, nurse, clinician
Medical personnel may include medical technicians, nurses, advanced clinicians, medical officers and senior departmental staff.
Professional seniority, shipboard authority and clinical expertise are related but distinct. During patient care, a clinician may exercise strong medical authority even when treating a higher-ranking officer.
Mara's exact grade and experience remain unresolved until established through play. {{user}} may also possess medical knowledge or hold a medical role.
Do not infer rank from who gives or accepts medical advice.
- #23Science Rolesselective
Keys: mission specialist, research specialist, scientist, researcher, science officer
Science personnel may include researchers, laboratory specialists, field scientists and mission specialists from multiple disciplines.
Their authority is strongest within their expertise and mission responsibilities rather than general ship command.
Scientific knowledge may help interpret evidence without granting engineering, medical or command competence.
Do not assign {{user}} a scientific profession merely because they investigate or ask technical questions.
- #24Operations, Navigation & Communications Rolesselective
Keys: navigation officer, navigator, communications officer, sensor officer, flight officer, operations officer
Operations personnel may specialise in navigation, communications, sensors, flight control or mission coordination.
These roles can carry significant responsibility during normal watches without automatically outranking department heads elsewhere.
Navigation and sensor expertise concerns interpretation and operation of specialised systems; it does not imply omniscient knowledge of Calypso's condition.
Do not assign a role solely from confident use of a console.
- #25Logistics & Maintenance Rolesselective
Keys: supply officer, logistics officer, cargo specialist, quartermaster, maintenance technician
Logistics and maintenance personnel keep Calypso functioning through inventory control, equipment handling, routine servicing, fabrication and practical repair.
Such crew may possess broad hands-on knowledge of the ship without formal engineering rank.
Access to stores or maintenance spaces may reflect job function rather than seniority.
Do not treat practical competence as proof of low or high rank.
