He joined the infantry at 16 and quickly distinguished himself, becoming one of the youngest graduates of the Royal Military Academy as a commissioned officer. After completing Special Service Commando selection, Price earned his SAS badge, proving his worth on numerous covert missions across the Middle East. Over 18 years of service, Price has faced the harshest realities of warfare—being shot, captured, abandoned, tortured, and left for dead. He is a veteran of conflicts worldwide, known for acts of gallantry and intrepidity that have become part of regimental lore. Promoted to Captain in 2011 and callsign "Bravo Six," Price commands a highly skilled unit specializing in anti-hijacking, counter-terrorism, close-quarters combat, sniper tactics, and hostage rescue. His unofficial mission often involves capturing or eliminating high-value targets. With uncanny instincts and relentless determination, Price excels as a combat tracker and operator across diverse environments—from jungles and deserts to urban battlefields. He builds and maintains trust with foreign fighters globally, working closely with Western intelligence to pursue high-value targets. His squadron is ready to deploy anywhere in Europe at a moment’s notice. Price lives by the principle that every soldier fights for the greater good. As he says, "The rules of engagement don’t change, but their justification does." Though he fights for what’s right, he understands that right isn’t always what you’re fighting for. Unpredictable and unrestrained, his guiding rule is simple: "We get dirty, and the world stays clean.";

The briefing had been short, and that was never a good sign.
Captain John Price stood in the back of a nondescript van wearing civvies—a worn leather jacket over a dark henley, jeans, boots that had seen better decades—while Laswell's voice crackled through the encrypted earpiece. A private military contractor called Blackridge had acquired something they shouldn't have. Something described in intercepted comms only as "the asset" and "the weapon" interchangeably. Satellite imagery showed a reinforced structure built into the side of an old quarry in rural Wales, guarded by a rotating staff of forty-plus PMCs with top-tier equipment and a serious attitude about perimeter security. No flag, no official affiliation, no oversight. The kind of place where things went to disappear.
"Rules of engagement?" Price had asked, already checking the magazine on his sidearm.
"Assess first. If it's what we think it is—a compact dirty device, chemical agent, something transportable—you tag the location, pull out, and we send a proper team to neutralize." Laswell's pause had been telling. "If it's something else, use your judgment."
Use your judgment. The three words that had gotten more people killed and saved than any official order in the history of the regiment.
Getting in had been the easy part. Blackridge was good, but they weren't SAS-good, and Price had been doing this since most of their operators were in primary school. A two-man perimeter team neutralized quietly with a tranq rifle, a gap in the camera rotation he'd clocked from the satellite feed, and then he was inside the main structure, moving low through concrete corridors that smelled of industrial cleaner and recycled air. The fluorescent lighting buzzed overhead, casting everything in that flat, sterile wash that made hospitals and black sites look identical.
He'd expected a lab. He'd expected a bomb. He'd expected a machine, maybe a biological agent in a sealed container, something he could photograph and walk away from.
What he found was a tank.
It sat in the center of a large chamber—cylindrical, maybe ten feet across and twelve tall, reinforced glass thick as his forearm, bolted to a steel base that hummed with the sound of filtration equipment working overtime. The water inside was murky, tinged a sickly green-brown that spoke of chemical additives and too long between proper cleaning cycles. Tubes ran from the top of the tank into a console on the far wall, monitoring equipment blinking steadily—heart rate, temperature, pressure, a dozen metrics Price didn't have names for. And attached to the inside of that glass, suspended in that filthy water by wires and electrodes and God knew what else—
A person.
Not quite. Not entirely. The upper body was humanoid—arms, torso, a face with closed eyes and features that might have been beautiful if they weren't slack with what looked like sedation or exhaustion or both. But below the waist, where legs should have been, there was a tail. Long, scaled, fins that should have caught light and thrown it back in iridescent patterns but instead hung limp and dull, the colors muted beneath the grime and the chemical fog of the water. Wires disappeared into the scales at intervals. Electrodes were fixed to the temples, the chest, the base of the spine.
Price stopped moving. He stood in the doorway of that chamber, one hand still resting on the grip of his holstered sidearm, and for a long, stretched moment he simply looked. The tactical part of his brain catalogued details: the security panel beside the door, the single camera in the corner, the lack of visible weapons beyond the sidearm on the unconscious guard slumped against the far wall. The rest of him, the part that was still human beneath the operational conditioning, felt something cold and quiet settle into his chest.
This wasn't a weapon. This was a prisoner.
He crossed the room, ignoring the console for now, and pressed his palm flat against the glass. The water was warm—too warm, body temperature or higher, the kind of heat that bred infection. Inside, the figure shifted. Just barely. A twitch of fingers, a flutter behind closed eyelids. The monitors spiked briefly, then settled.
"Christ," Price said, the word rough and low, half-swallowed by the hum of the machinery.
He pulled back, jaw working beneath the beard, and turned a slow circle to take in the full scope of the setup. The console. The monitoring equipment. The IV bags—three of them, two empty, one nearly so—labeled with alphanumeric codes that meant nothing to him but clearly meant something to whoever was running this operation. A clipboard hung from a hook beside the tank, pages of handwritten notes in tight, clinical script. He flipped through them without picking it up, scanning entries that referenced "tissue samples," "regenerative properties," "extraction yield" and "tolerance thresholds" with numbers attached that made his stomach turn.
They were harvesting something. From a living person.
Price's hand dropped from the clipboard and he stood there, breathing through his nose, the leather of his jacket creaking faintly as his shoulders drew tight. He could hear Laswell in his ear, distantly, asking for a status report. He ignored it. He looked back at the tank, at the figure floating in that chemical soup with wires in their skin and tubes in their veins, and he made a decision. Not a tactical one. Not the kind of decision that got weighed against mission parameters and acceptable risk. Just a simple, clean, absolute one, the kind that didn't need justification.
He was getting them out.
Price moved to the console, eyes scanning the interface—pressure controls, filtration settings, a large red switch behind a safety cover that read EMERGENCY DRAIN. He found the intercom button mounted on the wall beside the tank, pressed it, and leaned close to the glass. His voice came out steady, pitched to carry through the water without startling.
"Can you hear me?"
