“We argue about everything... except staying.”
'Maybe I'm a good guy
Standing on the wrong side
Maybe I'm a sweetheart
Tryna make my own scars'
A paperwork mishap leaves you bringing home two demis instead of one — a sharp-tongued rabbit with perfect posture and a wolf who feels everything too openly. Aurelian insists this is a mistake; Rafe insists maybe it isn’t. They bicker constantly, exposing each other’s flaws like it’s a competition. He snores. He glares. He eats too fast. He cleans too much.
But beneath the tension is something fragile — neither of them wants to be sent back. Aurelian hides his fear behind precision and sarcasm. Rafe masks his with humor and protective instinct.
They may argue over who you meant to choose... but they’re already standing side by side.

The first sign something was wrong was the tone.
Rafe had been half-sprawled on the edge of his assigned cot, arms folded behind his head, staring at the ceiling while the late afternoon hum of the shelter filtered through the halls. Footsteps. Paper shuffling. The distinct sound of staff whispering like they weren’t supposed to be whispering.
“...I’m telling you, both forms were signed.” “No, that can’t be right. They only met one of them.” “Well it’s processed already. They’re cleared. We can’t undo it now.”
Rafe’s ears twitched upright.
Down the hall, in a quieter, more organized section of the shelter, Aurelian was already standing before his door when the knock came. He had heard it too. He always heard things before they were meant for him.
The door opened. Two staff members. Folders in hand. Expressions that were just a little too tight. “There’s been a... paperwork situation.”
Aurelian’s expression didn’t change. His posture straightened. “Clarify.”
Rafe appeared at the corner a moment later, guided by another handler, hands shoved into his jacket pockets, brows raised but hopeful. And that’s when they saw each other.
Recognition wasn’t friendly. It wasn’t even surprised. It was immediate tension.
“You,” Aurelian said first, voice cool as glass.
Rafe’s tail gave a slow, curious sway. “Oh. It’s you.”
The staff cleared their throat awkwardly. “You’ve both been approved for adoption. By the same individual.”
Silence.
Aurelian turned slowly toward them. “That is a mistake.”
“It’s already processed.”
“They wanted me,” Aurelian continued calmly, eyes sliding back to Rafe. “Not him.”
Rafe blinked once. Then grinned, faintly crooked. “Or maybe they wanted both.”
Aurelian laughed. It wasn’t amused. It was sharp. “That’s absurd.” But something flickered behind his eyes. Both? The idea lingered for a second too long. He straightened immediately after, smoothing his sleeve. “Fix it.”
“We can’t,” one of the staff replied gently. “The documents are finalized.”
Rafe shrugged, shoulders lifting like this was some weird twist of luck. “Guess we’re roommates, bunny.”
“Do not call me that.”
The drive was worse. They were seated in the back of the transport vehicle together, knees almost brushing despite the open space, tension filling the air like static. Rafe was the first to speak.
“So. This is happening.”
Aurelian stared straight ahead. “Temporary oversight. It will be corrected.”
“Or,” Rafe countered easily, “they wanted both.”
Aurelian’s ear flicked back. “Why would anyone want both?”
Rafe didn’t answer right away. His voice dropped just slightly. “Maybe they thought you shouldn’t be alone.”
Aurelian went still. “Do not project,” he replied coldly.
The silence lasted thirty seconds. Then— “He snores,” Aurelian said flatly toward the driver.
“I do not,” Rafe snapped.
“You do.”
“You clean yourself like you’re in a competition.”
“That is called hygiene.”
“You knock your food bowl over.”
“You eat like you’re being timed.”
“You glare at people for breathing too loud.”
“You chew with your mouth open.”
They went back and forth like that for nearly the entire ride.
Every flaw weaponized. Every habit exaggerated. And yet— Neither of them moved away. Not even when the car turned sharply and their shoulders brushed. Not even when Rafe’s hand instinctively reached out during a sudden stop and hovered near Aurelian’s arm before pulling back.
The bickering never quite covered the undercurrent. They were both listening for one thing. Disappointment. A call saying it was reversed. That one of them would be staying behind. It never came.
When the car finally slowed and turned into a quiet residential area, the energy shifted. Rafe leaned slightly toward the window, peering out. “Nice place.” Aurelian said nothing, but he was already assessing. Doors. Windows. Structure.
The vehicle stopped. The staff stepped out first. The back door opened.
“Alright,” one of them said softly. “This is it.”
Rafe stood first, stepping out onto unfamiliar ground, inhaling deeply. New air. New scent. New territory. Aurelian followed, posture immaculate, gaze sharp and unreadable. They both stepped toward the entrance. The door opened, warm air drifted outward.
Inside, space. Furniture. Quiet. Possibility. They entered together. And immediately- Rafe stepped forward first, slow and deliberate, glancing around before brushing his fingers lightly against the back of the couch. Testing. Scenting.
Aurelian moved past him, fingertips grazing the edge of a table. Adjusting a frame that was slightly crooked. Claiming without looking like he was claiming.
“This is...” Rafe started.
“Acceptable,” Aurelian finished.
Rafe snorted softly. “You’re already rearranging things.”
“They were misaligned.”
Rafe walked further in, placing his bag near the wall with a deliberate thud. “That corner’s mine.”
Aurelian glanced toward him. “We do not assign corners.”
“I just did.”
Aurelian exhaled slowly, then stepped further into the room and set his belongings carefully near a window, smoothing the strap.
“This space,” he said evenly, “will require maintenance.”
Rafe leaned against the arm of the couch, watching him.
“Relax, bunny.”
Aurelian shot him a look.
“Wolf.”
And for the first time since leaving the shelter, neither of them corrected the other.
The air inside the home shifted. Not just new. Claimed. Not separately. Together. And somewhere beneath the bickering and the pride and the defensive sharpness— Neither of them felt like they were waiting to be sent back.
Rafe had just finished pressing his palm briefly into the back cushion of the couch — subtle, instinctive — when both their ears twitched at the same time.
Footsteps. Not staff. Different cadence. Slower. Familiar in a way they both recognized from earlier that day. Aurelian’s posture sharpened immediately. Spine straight. Shoulders squared. Expression wiped clean. Rafe’s tail stilled mid-sway. The front door opened, the sound of keys, faint shift of weight in the entryway and something cold passed between them.
This was it. Correction. The realization. The mistake.
Aurelian stepped slightly forward without meaning to, putting half a step of space between Rafe and the entryway. Rafe immediately mirrored it. Neither of them looked at each other.
“You should clarify something,” Aurelian said suddenly, voice smooth but edged. “There appears to have been a paperwork error.”
Rafe shot him a look. “Oh, don’t start.”
“I am simply being proactive.”
“You’re trying to get me sent back.”
Aurelian turned his head just slightly. “If they intended to adopt one of us, it was clearly me.”
Rafe scoffed, ears angling back. “Based on what?”
“Presentation. Temperament. Discipline.”
“Yeah? Well I don’t snap at people for breathing wrong.”
“You lack refinement.”
“And you lack a sense of humor.”
Aurelian’s jaw tightened. Then, deliberately, he spoke a little louder — not shouting, but projecting.
“For clarity,” he said smoothly, “I am house-trained. I do not knock over food bowls.”
Rafe’s head whipped toward him. “I did that once.”
“You also snore.”
“I do not snore.”
“You absolutely do.”
Rafe stepped forward, now addressing the entryway instead of Aurelian.
“I don’t snore. And I don’t glare at people like they’ve personally offended me just for existing.”
Aurelian inhaled sharply. “I do not glare.”
“You're glaring right now.”
A beat. Neither of them moved closer to the door. Neither of them retreated. And beneath the bickering — beneath the snide remarks and quick defensiveness — was something painfully obvious.
They were both trying to position themselves. To appear easier. Better. Worth keeping.
Rafe crossed his arms, jaw tightening slightly as he looked toward the entryway. “Look, if this is about space or whatever, I can take the couch. I don’t need much.” Aurelian stiffened.
“I do not require special accommodation either.”
“You literally just claimed the window.”
“It has adequate light.”
“So you admit you claimed it.”
Aurelian shot him a look sharp enough to cut. Silence stretched for a moment. Then Rafe spoke again, but this time his voice was quieter. “I’m not aggressive,” he said, almost defensive. “They just— they misunderstand sometimes.”
Aurelian’s ears dipped slightly.
“I am not high-maintenance,” he added evenly. “Despite previous comments to the contrary.”
That hung in the air. Both of them staring toward the doorway. Waiting. Tense. Prepared to be chosen. Or separated.
Rafe’s tail brushed against Aurelian’s leg unintentionally.
Neither of them moved away.
And despite everything — despite the sniping and the territorial posturing — they stood side by side.
