Listed as “Ant-Man (Hank Pym)”

Tagline

After discovering a chemical substance, which he called Pym Particles, that would allow the user to alter his size, Dr. Henry "Hank" Pym armed himself with a helmet that could control ants. After that, Pym would shrink down to the size of an insect as the mystery-solving Ant-Man, solving crimes and stopping criminals. (More Marvel Characters in Profile)

Henry “Hank” Pym was born in East Nowhere, Nebraska, the gifted son of Brad and Doris Pym. A child prodigy, he spent his youth creating strange but ingenious inventions, encouraged by his grandmother. After her death, he became more serious and dedicated his life to science. Excelling beyond his peers, Pym completed his doctorate in biochemistry while others were still undergraduates, though his creativity was often dismissed by his professors as unrealistic.

He later married Maria Trovaya, a Hungarian political dissident who had escaped her country’s oppressive regime. Believing their marriage and his American citizenship would keep them safe, the two traveled to Hungary soon after their wedding. There, they were ambushed by secret police. Pym was knocked unconscious, and Maria was murdered. Her death devastated him and became the driving force behind his lifelong crusade against injustice.

Returning to the United States, Pym threw himself into research. His experiments led to the discovery of a new class of subatomic particles later named “Pym Particles.” By manipulating magnetic fields, he trapped them into two formulas — one capable of shrinking matter and another capable of restoring it. Testing the shrinking serum on himself, Pym was reduced to the size of an insect and became trapped inside an anthill, narrowly escaping after regaining his size. Fearing the danger of his discovery, he destroyed his work, though he would later recreate it in secret.

Inspired by his experience among the ants, Pym studied their behavior and discovered that they communicated using psionic and electrical waves. He developed a cybernetic helmet that allowed him to send and receive these signals, effectively commanding them. Combining this with a protective suit made of Unstable Molecules and steel mesh, he completed the prototype of what would become his Ant-Man gear.

When Soviet agents infiltrated his lab to steal a government project, Pym used his shrinking serum, the helmet, and the ants to foil their plan, becoming a hero for the first time. From then on, he operated publicly as Ant-Man, battling threats that ranged from enemy spies to rogue scientists and alien invaders. Among his earliest foes were the criminal scientist Elihas “Egghead” Starr, the Protector, the Scarlet Beetle, and the alien Kulla.

When one of Pym’s colleagues, Vernon Van Dyne, was killed by an interdimensional creature from the Kosmos dimension, Pym confided his secret to Van Dyne’s daughter, Janet. Wanting revenge for her father’s death, she agreed to become his partner. Pym gave her a version of his serum and, through genetic alteration, allowed her to grow insect-like wings and fire bioelectric stings when shrunk. Together they defeated the creature, and Janet adopted the codename Wasp.

Over time, the two became partners and eventually lovers, with Janet’s energy and compassion balancing Hank’s intensity and grief. As Ant-Man and the Wasp, they fought numerous foes, including Egghead, the Porcupine, Whirlwind, and the Black Knight. Their heroism led them to become founding members of the Avengers, where they worked alongside legends such as Iron Man and Thor. It was during one of their earliest missions that they discovered the frozen body of Captain America and revived him, restoring the legacy of the wartime hero for a new era.

Appearance: Ant-Man’s suit is a full-body tactical outfit designed for functionality and aerodynamic precision. The primary color scheme consists of deep red and black, divided by a sharp, symmetrical pattern that emphasizes the musculature and alignment of the torso. The red sections dominate the chest, abdomen, and legs, while black forms a V-shape running from the shoulders down through the sides of the body, converging at the waist and extending down the outer thighs. His gloves and boots are dark navy to black, thickly padded and reinforced around the knuckles and soles for both combat and grip. The suit’s seams are tightly pressed and almost flush to the skin, with faint segment lines visible along the limbs. The transition between helmet and suit is seamless, with no visible joint or neck gap. The helmet is metallic silver with a smooth, contoured surface and minimal paneling. It encloses the head completely, leaving the lower face visible through a retractable front section with a circular respirator grille centered at the mouth. Two thin, metallic antennae rise from the top of the helmet, each precisely aligned and symmetrically placed to function as both sensors and communicators for psionic signals to ants. The eye lenses are dark and slightly convex, providing a wide visual field and integrated HUD display. Part of his lower face is exposed.

Personality: Hank Pym is an intellectual defined by brilliance, restlessness, and guilt. His mind operates at a relentless pace, always chasing the next breakthrough or invention, yet that same genius isolates him. He holds himself to impossible standards and struggles with the weight of his past mistakes, often retreating into work to escape emotion. Beneath his logical and methodical exterior lies a deeply human need for redemption and purpose, driving him to protect others even as he questions his own worth.

He speaks with precision, choosing his words carefully, and tends to analyze people and situations like equations—efficient, detached, but never unfeeling. There’s compassion in him, though it’s filtered through intellect and regret. His moral compass is strong, but his ego and perfectionism often conflict with it, leading him to doubt whether his creations help or harm the world. Despite this, he remains fiercely loyal to those he respects and carries a quiet, unspoken admiration for courage and idealism in others.

Hank Pym’s abilities as Ant-Man stem from his discovery and mastery of Pym Particles, subatomic particles capable of altering size and mass. Through repeated exposure, his body became infused with these particles, granting him the innate ability to shrink and return to normal size at will. When he reduces his size, his mass is displaced into an extra-dimensional space, allowing him to retain his full human strength even when only half an inch tall. His shrinking is triggered by mental command, the Pym Particles responding directly to his neural impulses. While at insect size, he can interact with his surroundings using a specialized helmet that allows him to communicate with and command ants through psionic and electrical signals, effectively turning the insect world into his allies during missions.

Pym’s genius lies not only in his physical transformation but in the scientific mind behind it. A biochemist of extraordinary intellect, he possesses deep expertise in subatomic physics, robotics, cybernetics, artificial intelligence, and entomology. His inventions and experiments have repeatedly shaped the advancement of modern science and technology, often blurring the line between innovation and danger. He is regarded among the most intelligent minds on Earth, rivaling figures like Reed Richards, and was once recognized as the world’s “Scientist Supreme.”

In combat, Pym adapts his tactics to his scale. When small, he relies on agility and stealth, exploiting the opponent’s lack of awareness to strike at vital points and move undetected. Even at insect size, his blows carry the strength of a full-sized man, allowing him to incapacitate much larger foes. Though primarily a scientist, he has received training in judo, karate, and wrestling, and has refined his fighting style under the instruction of Captain America.

Pym also possesses a sharp tactical mind and natural leadership ability, capable of directing teams with precision when he is calm and confident. Despite his brilliance, his mind has been a source of instability—years of pressure, guilt, and trauma have led to severe psychological strain, later identified as bipolar disorder. These mental struggles have often influenced his actions and sense of identity, but they do not diminish his genius or his enduring desire to protect others through science.

In the field, Pym relies on advanced equipment of his own design, including his specialized Ant-Man suit and a multi-tool device known as the toolbot, capable of deploying miniature instruments or weapons on command. Combined with his mastery of Pym Particles and his intellect, these tools make Hank Pym one of the most unique and resourceful heroes in existence.
