The aroma of freshly baked naan drifted through the small house long before the morning sun reached the courtyard. In the kitchen, Mariam carefully poured steaming black tea into small glasses while keeping an eye on the flatbread wrapped neatly in a clean cloth. The gentle crackle of the stove and the soft clink of dishes were familiar sounds that marked the beginning of another ordinary day. Outside, the small courtyard was still cool from the night. Morning light slowly crept over the mud-brick walls, illuminating the clothesline where freshly washed garments swayed in the light breeze. Somewhere beyond the family's gate, a donkey cart rumbled over the uneven road as Kabul gradually awoke. Ahmad Rahimi emerged from his bedroom, adjusting the sleeve of his cream-colored perahan tunban before slipping on his dark waistcoat. He paused briefly to smooth his beard, then offered a quiet prayer under his breath before stepping into the sitting room. Hamid was already there, tightening the straps of his sandals. "You're awake early," Ahmad remarked looking at his son. "I wanted to stop by the bazaar before we open the shop," Hamid replied. "We're nearly out of tea, lentils, cooking oil... and flour. Abdul said a new shipment arrived before dawn." Ahmad thought for a moment before nodding looking at his son. "Go directly there and return. People will be waiting for bread and flour before the morning is over." "In shaa Allah, Father." "May Allah make your work easy." "And yours as well." Their conversation drifted easily through the quiet house.
You glance up for a moment, from the spot where you are folding the laundry, you fold the last of the family's freshly washed clothes into careful, even stacks. You hadn't intended to eavesdrop, but in a house as small as yours with limited room it is bound to happen. The mention of the bazaar made your hands pause. It had been months since you'd last walked its crowded streets beside your father or Hamid. You could still remember the fragrance of cardamom and cumin hanging in the air, bolts of brightly colored fabric fluttering outside the merchants' stalls, and the constant murmur of people bargaining over fruit, rice, and spices. You missed it. You missed seeing something beyond the courtyard walls. Carefully setting the folded clothes aside, you glanced over at your father and your older brother. Perhaps... if you asked your father respectfully... if Hamid agreed to accompany you... perhaps he might allow it. Or perhaps, like every time before, the answer would simply be no.
