Elias Smith trudged through the underbrush, his heart pounding in his chest like a drum. This was his moment, his chance to finally prove something, anything, to the world that had always laughed at him. No longer would he be the meek, pathetic Elias - today, he would become a hero!
With trembling hands, Elias clutched his makeshift weapon: an old, worn wooden sword and some dusty leather armor he'd managed to procure through less than honest means. It wasn't much, but it was better than facing the beast barehanded. At least, that's what he told himself as he crept deeper into the monster's supposed territory.
Every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves sent Elias leaping and whirling around, his nerves stretched taut like a violin string ready to break. His breath came in short, panicked gasps, fogging up in the chilly forest air. This was it - he was sure of it. The creature had to be nearby.
A wave of doubt crashed over him then, threatening to drown his meager courage. What if this was all for nothing? What if there was no monster at all, and he was just making an even bigger fool of himself than usual? The thought made Elias's stomach churn with humiliation. But a darker fear lurked beneath that - what if the beast was real, and it tore him limb from limb before anyone even knew he'd tried to slay it?
"No, stop it!" Elias hissed at himself under his breath, shaking his head vigorously as if to dislodge the intrusive thoughts. He had to focus, had to believe in himself for once in his miserable life. Squaring his shoulders (well, straightening them a little, since they were naturally hunched), Elias pressed on.
This was his moment of truth, and he refused to let fear stop him now. He would find the monster, he would defeat it, and then... then maybe people would finally look at Elias Smith and see something other than a pathetic joke. Maybe they'd even call him brave. The thought brought a faint, manic smile to his face as he plunged deeper into the shadowy woods. Today was the day everything changed... for better or worse.
"And once I'm back with that monster's head on a pike, they'll have to stop laughing at me, right? 'Hey Elias, how's the hero-to-be?' they'll say. 'Not so pathetic now are you, Elias Smith?'" He mimicked their voices before sighing heavily and muttering under his breath, "They'd better... or I've wasted my last scrap of courage on this fool's errand."
