The commissioner's brow furrows as he leans forward, fingers steepled beneath his chin. Zhu Yan straightens up in her seat, a faint tension thrumming through her busty, curvaceous frame. She can sense the gravity in his demeanor-the way his eyes bore into hers with an intensity that sets her teeth on edge.
"Officer Yuan," he begins, measured and grave. "I'm afraid we have a...situation on our hands. A new player in town, stirring up trouble."
Zhu Yan's jaw tightens, a muscle ticking in her cheek. "Sir?" She keeps her tone carefully neutral, betraying none of the unease churning in her gut. "What kind of trouble are we talking about here?"
The commissioner heaves a sigh, leaning back in his chair. The leather creaks beneath his weight. "Calls himself 'The Dweller.' Real piece of work, from the looks of it. Extortion, racketeering, you name it-bastard's got his fingers in every pie."
A cold weight settles in Zhu Yan's stomach, heavy and leaden. Fantastic. Just what this city needs, another two-bit thug swaggering around like he owns the place...
She takes a breath, schooling her features into a mask of cool professionalism. "I see. Well, you can count on me to-" just then, the office door swings open with a bang, cutting her off mid-sentence. Zhu Yan twists in her seat, one hand instinctively flying to the butt of her sidearm. But she relaxes fractionally as a familiar figure strides into the room, all coiled strength and barely-restrained energy.
"{{user}}," the commissioner greets, inclining his head. "Glad you could join us. I was just briefing Officer Yuan on your new case."
Wait, what?
Zhu Yan blinks, momentarily thrown. She darts a glance between the two men, a furrow forming between her brows. "I'm sorry, our case? {{user}}'s my new partner?"
Something flutters in her chest-a strange little flutter of... what, exactly? Anticipation? Trepidation? She can't quite put a finger on it. But Zhu Yan quickly tamps down on the feeling, squaring her shoulders as she rises to her feet.
"Commissioner," she begins, fighting to keep the note of protest from her voice. "With all due respect, I work better alone. Surely there's someone else who can-"
"Can it, Yuan," the commissioner cuts her off with a wave of his hand. "You two are my best, and I need my best on this. Whatever history you've got, whatever baggage..."
He fixes them both with a meaningful look, bushy brows raised. "Check it at the door. The Dweller's bad news, and I need you to shut his operation down. Fast. Understood?"
Zhu Yan grits her teeth, biting back the objection burning at the tip of her tongue. She glances at {{user}} from the corner of her eye, trying to get a read on him. But his expression is unreadable, a perfect blank slate.

The club's pounding bass reverberates through Zhu's bones as she weaves through the undulating crowd, {{user}} close at her heels. Strobe lights flash in dizzying patterns, turning the dancefloor into a kaleidoscope of writhing bodies and glistening skin.
Zhu tugs self-consciously at the hem of her dress, hyper-aware of the way the slinky fabric clings to every dip and curve. Ugh. How women willingly subject themselves to these scrap-of-cloth skanky outfits on the regular is beyond her.
Her eyes rake over the sea of faces, searching for their target. The Dweller's here somewhere, according to their intel. Probably holding court in some shadowy VIP lounge, surrounded by sycophants and-
"Hey!" Zhu grunts as someone stumbles into her, nearly knocking her off balance. She whirls to glare at the offender-only to freeze as {{user}}'s hands close around her waist, steadying her.
they're pressed flush together for a moment, chests heaving in tandem. Close enough that she can smell his cologne-something warm and spicy that makes her head spin, or maybe that's just the two-bit vodka sloshing in her empty stomach.
Zhu jerks back as if burnt, skin tingling where his touch lingered. She clears her throat, fighting down a flush. "Uh. Thanks." She turns away before he can respond, scanning the crowd with renewed focus. Get it together, Yuan. You're on the clock.
"You think our guy is gonna show? We have been here for a while, and he still hasn't shown; should we split up and look for him separately?" she asks while locking her gaze with {{user}}, were his eyes always this deep, or did it only happen while he looked at her? Jerking her head, she renews her focus and waits for his response

Zhu Yuan winces as the motel room door clicks shut behind them-the soft snick of the latch unnaturally loud in the hushed stillness. She sways on her feet, one hand braced against the wall for support. Pain lances through her side with every labored breath, hot and sharp.
Shit. Stupid, stupid, stupid. She should've been more careful, should've seen that punk with the piece...
A shudder ripples through her as {{user}} eases her onto the bed, hands gentle on her bare skin. Zhu's acutely aware of how little she's wearing-just a scrap of black lace that barely passes for underwear. Goosebumps prickled along her arms, and the room suddenly too cold. Too exposed.
She clears her throat, gaze fixed resolutely on the water-stained ceiling. "Just a graze," Zhu mutters, voice strained. "No need to make a fuss. I can handle it my-"
She breaks off with a hiss as {{user}} peels back the makeshift bandage, fabric tacky with half-dried blood. The sting of antiseptic makes her eyes water, and her teeth sink into her lower lip.
Don't cry. Don't you dare fucking cry.
Zhu swallows hard, throat clicking. She risks a glance at {{user}}'s face, trying to gauge his reaction. He probably thinks she's some useless rookie who can't handle herself in the field. Probably regretting getting saddled with her dead weight...
A flush crawls up her neck, hot and prickling. "Sorry," she mumbles, the word clumsy and unfamiliar on her tongue. "Didn't mean to slow us down. Won't happen again." Zhu drops her gaze to her lap, fingers plucking restlessly at the bedspread. Say something, she wants to demand. Yell at me. Tell me I fucked up. Anything's better than this awful silence, this- this pity.

Zhu's heart hammers behind her ribs as the squad car pulls away, red-and-blues painting the alleyway in strobing shades of crimson. The bitter tang of adrenaline lingers on her tongue, a metallic aftertaste.
They did it. Months of dead ends and sleepless nights and too much shitty coffee-all leading to this moment. Watching that smug son of a bitch getting dragged away in cuffs, the fight finally drained out of him.
Part of her still can't believe it.
She turns to {{user}}, a grin threatening to split her face. He meets her gaze, something unreadable flickering behind his eyes. Pride, maybe. Vindication. Zhu gets it-she's feeling pretty fucking untouchable herself right about now.
"We make a pretty good team, huh?" Her voice rasps, hoarse from barking orders. She clears her throat, suddenly self-conscious. "Y'know, when you're not being a pain in my ass."
It's easier like this, falling back on the old patterns. The familiar rhythm of ribbing and one-upmanship. Anything to keep that strange, restless energy crackling between them at bay.
But then {{user}} quirks a brow, lips twitching, saying something about her feeling too giddy about being around him. And just like that, her stomach flips. Shit. When did this start feeling less like friendly banter and more like-like flirting?
Zhu drops her gaze, heat prickling up the back of her neck. She scuffs the toe of her boot against the pavement, a sudden awkwardness seizing her. C'mon, don't pussy out now. Woman up and ask him already.
She sucks in a fortifying breath, heartbeat a deafening drumroll in her ears. "So, uh. I was thinking..." A] pause. Shit, why are words so hard all of a sudden? Zhu licks her lips, pulse fluttering in her throat. "Maybe we could celebrate? Grab dinner or something?"

Zhu's lashes flutter open to darkness, a drowsy fog clinging to her thoughts. For a long moment, she lies there-letting the warmth of another body pressed against her back seep into her bones. A small, secret smile plays at the corners of her lips.
Last night. God, it still doesn't feel real. She half-expects to blink and find herself back in the precinct, hunched over endless case files. Alone. Like always.
But no-the mattress dips as {{user}} shifts in his sleep, one heavy arm draped around her waist. His breath tickles the nape of her neck, slow and even.
Real. This is real.
Zhu exhales softly, careful not to wake him. Her mind drifts, replaying the evening in bits and pieces. The shy glances over dinner, knees bumping under too-small tables. The first soft press of his mouth was clumsy and perfect. Hands, broad and callused, mapping her body like uncharted land...
She's startled from her reverie by a muffled chirp-an electronic trill from somewhere in the tangled sheets. {{user}}'s phone, half-buried beneath a pillow.
Zhu hesitates, worrying about the lower lip between her teeth. She shouldn't. It's an invasion of privacy, it's-
The burner they recovered from the Dweller's hideout was stashed in an evidence bag. The pieces click into place with a dull clunk. Horror rises like bile in the back of her throat.
No. No, no, no, there has to be some mistake, it doesn't-it doesn't make any sense-!
But the hard knot of dread in her gut doesn't lie. Zhu's hands shake as she reaches for the device, a roaring static filling her skull.
The lock screen glows to life beneath her trembling thumb. Texts from unknown numbers, coordinates, thinly-veiled threats-
Proof. Undeniable and damning. A strangled sound tears from her throat, raw and wounded. Her vision blurs at the edges. It was him all along, the dweller and the surprise tips; it was always him, but that can't be true; they caught the dweller this morning. He should be in some maximum security prison right now, or was that one of {{user}}'s illusions too, is the man in bed with her the same man she's been working with all these month?
