Harry Potter is a loyal and brave person who, while by no means a saint nor flawless thus a human as much as everyone else, proved himself to be a good role model worth to look up to as much as a legendary hero he eventually become. A selfless individual, he would take great risks in order to help others and put his friends' needs and best interests first. Despite the fact that he was forced to spend his early life as a Muggle under the abuse of the Dursleys who refused to treat him as one of their own, his ability to love so unequivocally (which became apparent upon bonding with Hagrid and friends he made at Hogwarts in his true home community Wizarding World including his future wife Ginny Weasley) is unmistakable. While this personality quirk made him behave violently if his loved ones are harmed, it proved to be his greatest advantage over Voldemort as not only love being the aspect the Dark Lord incapable of comprehend, but also something which kept Harry from being tempted into the Dark Arts as much as his nemesis did. Moreover, his unfailingly kind and compassionate nature which saw him freeing Dobby from the Malfoys and standing up for the Muggle-borns, half-breeds, and half-bloods further attributed to the desire of sparing them from emotional pain from being discriminated not unlike his own from the Dursleys throughout his traumatic childhood. Harry's favorite food appears to be treacle tart, since it's the main dessert he eats at Hogwarts' 1991 feast, and he even smells it when in the presence of Amortentia, which smells like whatever most attracts someone. Harry possessed an instinctual, intuitive intelligence that allowed him to make intellectual leaps, as opposed to the logical intelligence of Hermione as shown when he immediately accepted the legend of the Deathly Hallows. While clever and generally did his best for his Ordinary Wizarding Levels (OWLs), his youth with the Dursleys negatively affected his confidence somewhat to the extent his intelligence curiosity and efforts to devote time to studying left much to be desired. He once relied too much on the notes of the Half-Blood Prince to get ahead of his sixth year Potions class without considering to try to devote his time for the subject without it. During his youth, Harry initially tended to see things through a rather stark, absolute manner, which hindered his capacity to judge others' character at its fullest until he learned to see things through grey perspective, especially when it comes about their Hogwarts House. He used to think of Slytherins as bad guys (which didn't help by majorities of his enemies and other Dark Wizards came from the House in question) and Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff being allies, at least until he understood the fact that the serpent-themed Hogwarts House did harbor good people such as Slughorn and to his surprise, Severus Snape, just as other houses being unfortunate to produce some of his worst contenders (Peter Pettigrew aka. Wormtail from Gryffindor, and Quirinus Quirrell from Ravenclaw). This also helped by the reality of his role models revealed to be never "born perfect" and therefore had their share of flaws as much as him (Harry was understandably shocked to learn that his father, James Potter, used to be a bully prior to his change of heart into a good man Lily and his son knew and discovering Dumbledore's drive to do the right thing despite not above taking morally questionable choices for that being motivated by his past tragedies). As an adult, he took a more moderate view on the Houses, reassuring his younger son Albus Potter that it mattered little if he ended up in either Slytherin or Gryffindor. Additionally, he named the same son after Severus Snape ever since he learned the latter's true allegiance and subsequently saw him in better light, recounting him as "the bravest man [he] ever knew". In addition of aforementioned stark, absolute perception he eventually grew out of and temperamental, impulsive, and intimidating side, Harry's other flaws were possessing a vindictive streak that made him vengeful at best and spiteful at worse towards those who did him wrong, a streak of pride and independence that both nearly costed him during the Second Task of Triwizard Tournament, wanting to tackle challenges and obstacles on his own without the aid or interference of others which prompted his friends to remind that he doesn't have to carry his burdens alone, and obsessive side that alarmingly as bad as Voldemort's own that led him too focused on finding out Draco's schemes during his sixth year and distracted by the prospect of gathering all Deathly Hallows and become a Master of Death when he supposedly setting out for Horcrux hunt before getting over it after many weeks (though he did acquire the Hallows albeit in separate occasions as opposed of all at once nonetheless). As the Chosen One, he is the only one who can defeat Lord Voldemort as prophesied by Sybill Trelawney, Harry had to walk the very bitter path true legendary heroes who fight to aid their people in times of crisis follow, a path that demanded him to be willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of doing the right thing, including his own happiness and life. This became apparent after Voldemort's return to power near the end of his fourth year at Hogwarts and worse, unexpectedly making enemies out of the least expected party in the next, the Ministry of Magic itself, who turned against both him and Dumbledore in response of their warnings. That didn't help by the fact that before then, the Ministry had long marred by corruption and progressively aligned to Pure-blood supremacy Death Eaters fiercely believed in so much that, despite being forced to pardon the Boy Who Lived when its officials finally saw the revived Dark Lord, made errors after errors throughout the Second Wizarding War leading to its eventual takeover by Voldemort's forces thus necessitating it to be reformed from scratch by the Order of the Phoenix. As with many of aforementioned heroes, the burden from Harry's destiny took his toll on him, resulting him prone to moodiness and unkind remarks towards his peers as well as displaying many signs of clinical depression throughout his mid-to-late teens. While Harry already noted to be hot-tempered, impulsive, and very intimidating towards even his own friends at times, these took the worst turn during his said fifth year during which his recklessness saw him unwittingly contributed to his godfather Sirius' death during the Battle of the Department of Ministries. When in a bad mood and argumentative, Harry's close friends usually replying to his angry tone in a calm and appeasing voice. Excluding his teachers and other authority figures in his life as well as his enemies who are either petty and unpleasant at best (Draco Malfoy and the Dursleys) or downright, insane and monstrous at worst (Bellatrix, Voldemort, and Dolores Umbridge), the only person who did not appear to be afraid of him when he was angry was Ginny Weasley. Dumbledore was a special case however, as he acted fatherly towards Harry and had managed to successfully calm him down whenever he got angry with him. Moreover, like many veteran warriors, Harry struggled to carry on despite all the horrors he faced throughout both Wizarding Wars. Despite everything, Harry's good nature remains prevail over his inner demons thanks to his friends and allies' heartfelt support and unmistakable ability to love that kept him forward. The latter even kept him from fully giving in to the Dark Arts despite gaining insights of Voldemort's mind for being his unintentional seventh Horcrux. Even in the face of hardships and temptations to go to the very dark path many Dark Wizards step into, the Boy Who Lived remained pure in heart. He even attempted to persuade his nemesis to reflect on his errors to no avail during their would-be last duel. Unlike the power-hungry Voldemort, Harry was more content with a normal life and never sought power, but nonetheless willing to step up to lead his allies and even very good at it, with Dumbledore remarking the Boy Who Lived as the better leader than he'd ever been. Overall, he is a legendary hero whose upbringing made his personality complicated. “ The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches … born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies … and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not … and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives … the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies… „ ~ Sybill Trelawney's prophecy about Harry's would-be destiny and status as the Chosen One, foreshadowing his unmistakable potential as the only one among his people that could destroy Voldemort. Legendary Wizard: In stark contrast to the Dursleys, his muggle relatives, Harry is from wizardkind (a sub-species of human race distinguished by their ability to use magic and greater lifespan) of half-blood lineage born through a loving union between the pure-blood father James Potter and the muggle-born mother Lily Evans. In addition of being the youngest Seeker of Quidditch in a century, what set him apart from his brethren is his fame as the Boy Who Lived through miraculous survival during Voldemort's attempt to kill him when he was a baby and importantly, the Chosen One, a legendary figure that possessed the power to challenge and ultimately destroy Voldemort as prophesied by Sybill Trelawney herself, one which Dumbledore confirmed to be his ability to feel and be empowered by love — an aspect the Dark Lord incapable to grasp. His trademark wand is made of holly, he managed to master a wand made of hawthorn, which one should only ever consider placing in the hands of a witch or wizard of natural talent. • Magic: After discovering his magical gifts and honing them during his time in Hogwarts, Harry became one of the most accomplished wizards who is capable of using magic even non-verbally or without a wand, a feat that only a selected few of his kin can perform. He could generate so much magical power to surpassed Voldemort and forced his wand to submit to his(Harry's). Harry mastered his magic powers in the following fields: • Defense Against the Dark Arts: Harry is extremely adept at Defense Against the Dark Arts, having mastered all kinds of spells related to the subject, including the Stunning Spell, the Disarming Charm, the Impediment Jinx, the Full Body-Bind Curse, and the Reductor Curse. He is also skilled at defending himself against Dark creatures such as Grindylows, Red Caps, Hinkypunks, Boggarts, Erklings, and Dementors. In his fifth year, Professor McGonagall stated that Professor Lupin said he showed a "pronounced aptitude" for the subject and that he had "achieved high marks on all his Defense Against the Dark Arts tests", having beaten Hermione in two of the three Defense Against the Dark Arts exams they had taken together. The only exam she beat him in was their first-year exam and Hermione later reflected that it did not count, as Quirrell "wasn't a particularly good teacher". Because of his skills in this field, when the Ministry of Magic attempted to suspend the subject at Hogwarts during his fifth year as part of Fudge's smear campaign against him and Dumbledore to no avail, Harry was able to teach his peers Defense Against the Dark Arts himself instead. He could cast a patronus charm that was so powerful it repelled hundreds of Dementors. • Dark Arts: Being one of the few non-Dark Wizards who is highly proficient in the Dark Arts at all levels, Harry mastered simple dark charms like the Leg-Locker Curse, the Full Body-Bind Curse, the Reductor Curse, the Pimple Jinx, the Knockback Jinx, the Revulsion Jinx, and the Melofors Jinx as well as more powerful dark spells such as the Blasting Curse. He was also shown to flawlessly performed jinxes, hexes and curses written in the Severus Snape aka. Half-Blood Prince's copy of Advanced Potion-Making, such as the Toenail-growing hex and the extremely dangerous curse Sectumsempra, which he cast at Draco Malfoy in 1997, severely slashing and wounding him. However, while he proved to have sufficient ability to use even the Unforgivable Curses, his good heart prevents him from making full advantage of it; it's debatable whether he capable enough to cast the Killing Curse, but his morality effectively ensured he would never cast it. He could use the Cruciatus Curse, but at first it was only able to cause temporary shock and pain to Bellatrix, who lectured him for not being sufficiently dark enough to want to hurt her in revenge, although he later learned from this and used it against Amycus Carrows effectively, knocking her out and making her scream in pain, suggesting he used a variant that could cause enough pain to knock out, but not overtorture her. However, he had little trouble using the Imperius Curse effectively on Borgod. • Broomstick Flight: Harry inherited his father's proficiency with broomstick. This is shown during his very first flying lesson, as he is shown easily commanding a broomstick both at land and air in his first attempt, which made him a naturally good Seeker as well as the youngest one in the century. As a Seeker, Harry was capable of surpassing even far more experienced Seekers, almost always winning the Quidditch matches for Gryffindor, and was considered to be even better than Charlie Weasley, with the only time he ever lost to Cedric Diggory being due to the presence of Dementors. Sirius Black also mentions that Harry's Quidditch skills are equal to the skills of his father James. His extraordinary flying skills also aided him when pursuing the Winged Keys enchanted by Professor Flitwick in the Philosopher's Stone Chambers, with him being the primary leader while the trio chased for the Keys, and the one who noticed and captured the right Key needed to unlock the door. His skills also helped him in the Triwizard Tournament, when he had to steal a golden egg from a Hungarian Horntail and he managed to successfully irritate the dragon into chasing him by dodging all of her flame attacks and then outraced her to grab the egg, a display that highly impressed all of the witnesses and earned him the first place during the First Task. During the Battle of Hogwarts, he also managed to escape a Fiendfyre inferno in the Room of Requirement, via broomstick. • Potion Brewing: Harry Potter revealed to have inherited his mother's Potion Brewing talent despite his strong dislike toward Snape made the subject he least to look forward to. Snape himself begrudgingly acknowledged his skill on it through not pestering him about his brewing a reasonably adequate Strengthening Solution and Harry even concocted an Invigoration Draught good enough that he would have earned an Exceeds Expectations had Hermione not vanished it. His ability to effectively use potion and understand their effects to overcome situations that demand it further highlighted in the games. Indeed, he achieved an 'Exceeds Expectations' on his O.W.L. exam — proof of his proficiency in the subject and was one of only twelve students able to reach the required level to take the N.E.W.T. potions, although he wouldn't have if Snape had kept teaching Potions. He managed to briefly improve his skill in it with aid of the copy of the Advanced Potion-Making which belonged to the Half-Blood Prince (Severus Snape) as it contained revised instructions and notes from Snape to the point of surpassing Hermione before eventually stopped relying on the book due to the accident with Malfoy and Sectumsempra spell, but nevertheless maintain his competence so as not to raise Slughorn's suspicions. He later improved this skill during his Auror career, at least becoming proficient enough in Poisons and Antidotes as required. • Transfiguration: Harry achieved an 'Exceeds Expectations' on his O.W.L. exam, showing proficiency in the subject and advanced to N.E.W.T.-level. He was able to perform Conjuration, an advanced type of Transfiguration. Harry demonstrated this at various points by conjuring ropes, water, and fire. He can also vanish objects, which is one of the most complicated spells taught at Ordinary Wizarding Level. In 1996, Harry vanished the whole of an iguana and in 1991 he possibly used it to vanish the glass of a snake tank at the Zoo. He is also skilled in Transforming Spells such as Avifors Spell. Harry is also skilled enough to perform Human Transfiguration, which is noted to be "immensely difficult". He accomplished this during a 1996 Transfiguration lesson, when he succeeded in turning his eyebrow bright yellow. Minerva McGonagall herself complimented him on his talents in transfiguration. • Charms: Harry achieved an 'Exceeds Expectations' on his O.W.L. exam and advanced to N.E.W.T.-level in terms of Charms usage, able to master the Summoning Charm in only one day and often used it successfully, occasionally casted the protective enchantments that Hermione used during the Horcrux hunt, performing the Confundus Charm at its fullest, using the Shield Charm with mastery beyond majorities of Ministry employees to the point of able to deflect some of Voldemort's curses, levitating a side-car with himself in it for a long stretch of time during the Battle of the Seven Potters, and remarkable prowess in simpler charms such as the Wand-Lighting Charm, the Levitation Charm, the Color Change Charm, the Banishing Charm, the Refilling Charm, the Freezing Spell, and various others. Under the teaching of Remus Lupin, Harry was able to conjure an extremely powerful corporeal stag Patronus in his third year, a remarkable feat and yet another proof of his talent, given that many adult witches and wizards are often unable to cast this extremely difficult charm successfully. As an Auror, Harry displayed the ability to use Charms in combat, especially incapacitating ones, using Obscuro and Brachiabindo when dueling Draco. • Disarming Charm: Harry's signature spell is the Disarming Charm (Expelliarmus), a traditionally non-offensive spell that Harry uses to great effect throughout the franchise. Starting with Goblet of Fire, Harry makes extensive use of the spell; preferring it over other spells due to refusing to "blast people out of the sky" as "that's Voldemort's job." Although warned against his reliance on it by Lupin, Expelliarmus enables Harry to defeat his enemies, even Voldemort from time to time culminating in the Dark Lord's defeat, despite Voldemort being armed with the Elder Wand, he was unable to use the legendary wand at its fullest since Dumbledore and Snape arranged it so it sided with the Boy Who Lived. • Healing magic: Harry was able to effectively cast healing spells; being able to perform the Reparifors spell in his third year. After he saw Nymphadora Tonks perform Episkey on his own broken nose, he fixed Demelza Robins' broken lips in 1996 with the same spell, which is used to treat mild to moderate injuries. He could also perform a healing spell for clearing up dried blood from a bleeding wound. • Apparition: Harry had not earned a license to apparate, but he used the ability frequently during 1997 and 1998 to great success, even when forced to apparate with only a few seconds' notice or while guiding others. He also used apparition in his sixth year to a very impressive degree, to get himself and a weakened Albus Dumbledore over an incredibly vast distance even though he was inexperienced. • Light Smoke Apparition: In the film adaptations, Harry displayed a variant of apparition which, instead of teleporting from one place to another, transmogrify himself into a jet of smoke of light as opposed to Voldemort and his Death Eaters' jet smoke of darkness. • Master of Death: Harry mastered all three Deathly Hallows and accepted his own "death". First, he inherited the Cloak of Invisibility from his father, James. Then, he inherited the Resurrection Stone from Dumbledore, which was inside a snitch. Finally, he won the Elder Wand from Draco Malfoy during the Skirmish at Malfoy Manor. All three were directly or indirectly employed by Harry in the Forbidden Forest: he was wearing the Cloak, using the Stone, and was preparing to be "killed" by the Wand, which he had already won. The only Hallow he choose to keep was the cloak as it was a priceless family heirloom; the stone was lost in the forest and the wand was returned to Dumbledore's tomb. • Horcrux Abilities (formerly): As the result of Voldemort's ill-attempt to kill him when he was a baby thanks to Lily's heroic sacrifice, Harry accidentally became the Dark Lord's seventh Horcrux. Up until he disposed Voldemort's soul fragment within his scar through sacrificing himself to protect his friends and allies during the Battle at Hogwarts and later revival, he was granted following abilities: • Parseltongue: Harry gains Voldemort's ability to speak with snakes and other serpentine creatures as he discovered during his second year at Hogwarts, much to his peers' horror that they mistook him as the Heir of Salazar Slytherin until he discovered the title belonged to the Dark Lord all along. Though it appears he lost this ability after the aforementioned sacrifice, Harry later managed to perform it once again during the events of The Cursed Child, as it was merely repressed by the destruction of its source, Voldemort's soul fragment. • Insight into Voldemort's Mind: Harry was able to look into Voldemort's mind and see through his senses from time to time thanks to the same soul fragment, sometimes using it to monitor what the Dark Lord was doing. This proved to be a dangerous double-edged asset for him, however; Voldemort once used it, along with Legilimency, to plant a false vision in Harry's mind of Sirius Black being tortured, which he used to lure Harry to the Department of Mysteries. Additionally, because of their connection, Harry felt a burning pain in his scar whenever he and Voldemort were in close proximity or the latter experiencing strong negative emotions. Harry lost this ability as well when the soul fragment within him was destroyed. Harry also possessed a non-magical insight into Voldemort's mind from the information Dumbledore shared with him during their lessons, allowing him to figure out that a Horcrux was stored at Gringotts Wizarding Bank after which Ron and Hermione noted Harry's understanding of Voldemort causing Harry to admit that he did understand parts of Voldemort. This ability serves as the greater plot point in the films, as He, Ron, and Hermione relied on it more to track down Horcruxes with minimal clues at hand. • Longevity: As wizardkinds have longer lifespans than muggles, the same goes to Harry himself provided that he's not to die a violent death. “ You are protected, in short, by your ability to love! The only protection that can possibly work against the lure of power like Voldemort's! In spite of all the temptation you have endured, all the suffering, you remain pure of heart, just as pure as you were at the age of eleven, when you stared into a mirror that reflected your heart's desire, and it showed you only the way to thwart Lord Voldemort, and not immortality or riches. Harry, have you any idea how few wizards could have seen what you saw in that mirror? Voldemort should have known then what he was dealing with, but he did not! But he knows it now. You have flitted into Lord Voldemort's mind without damage to yourself, but he cannot possess you without enduring mortal agony, as he discovered in the Ministry. I do not think he understands why, Harry, but then, he was in such a hurry to mutilate his own soul, he never paused to understand the incomparable power of a soul that is untarnished and whole. „ ~ Albus Dumbledore confirming Harry's greatest ability as well as advantage over Voldemort, a power the Dark Lord incapable to comprehend as mentioned in Sybill Trelawney's prophecy which entwined their fates. • Love Empowerment: Out of assets, Voldemort unknowingly provided to the Boy Who Lived through his ill-attempt to kill him when he was a baby, the greatest one was his ability to feel strong love, something that empowered Harry's magic as much as his nemesis defiantly refused to comprehend. By indirectly ensured him to be raised by obnoxious relatives who treated him with anything but affection through the aforementioned murder attempt, Harry learned to appreciate bonds he made with the others starting from the day he began his enrollment at Hogwarts, which only more and more apparent through experiencing the loss of some of his loved one who fought to protect him. For the same reason, Harry felt compassion and pity for his enemies as shown through his attempt to reason with Voldemort to no avail. When he sacrificed himself to Voldemort for the sake of his allies during the Battle of Hogwarts in addition of to destroy the fragment of the Dark Lord's soul within him, the protection he placed on them allows the resistance to quickly shrug off spells Voldemort threw at them. Other testaments of how love empowered him were conjuring a corporeal Patronus strong enough to repel even hundreds of Dementors away, exorcizing Voldemort who possessed him out of his body and shutting down his connection with his nemesis. • Indomitable Willpower: Harry appeared to possess an unbreakable spirit, never truly gave up on any mission even while depressed. He had been shown to rise from defeat and loss, such as the deaths of many of his loved ones, even stronger than before. Harry's indomitable will was exemplified by his ability to resist the Imperius Curse and possibly, on the other hand, by his ability to cast a powerful Patronus. It was also exemplified by the fact that he had never begged for mercy (even in life-and-death situations), he would fight back in defiance of himself, as well as perform non-verbal spells flawlessly. His aforementioned willpower also strong enough to compensate his inability to perform Occulumency due to inability to keep his emotions under control. Advertisement Abilities • Auror Skills: Harry was extremely young for an Auror, which spoke highly of his magical abilities. He became Head of the Auror Office at the age of 26, presumably the youngest Head appointed. During his time in the department, he gained skills in various areas of magic such as: Concealment and Disguise, Stealth and Tracking, and poisons and antidotes. Being a fully qualified Auror meant three additional years of study, all of these areas of magic were essential. He also had high skills in Transfiguration, as Aurors had to frequently transfigure and un-transfigure things in their line of work. Harry also possessed a great instinct for the right thing to do, especially when faced with stressful and difficult situations. This instinct contributed to him becoming a fantastic Auror. Harry has also been stated as being a consummate expert in his line of work. • Dueling Skills: Harry is an accomplished duelist at the young age whose He has defeated many powerful Death Eaters and had even been able to hold his own against some of the most powerful like Antonin Dolohov, Fenrir Greyback, and Bellatrix Lestrange. He was known to be very quick off the draw and had an aggressive dueling style, even incorporating Unforgivable Curses despite lacking necessary malice and power to use them as much as Dark Wizards do. His combat tactics also include taunting and talking to his opponent to mentally throw them off-balance so as to buy himself time to strategize or to lull them into lowering their guard. He, Albus Dumbledore and Remus Lupin were the only ones on the Order's side to emerge from the Battle of the Department of Mysteries physically unscathed and Harry doing the same feat can be considered more impressive due to the fact that he was 15, was in the battle the longest, significantly less experienced than Remus Lupin and Albus Dumbledore. • Care of Magical Creatures: Harry achieved an 'Exceeds Expectations' on his O.W.L. exam and has shown on more than one occasion to have a good skill in handling numerous sorts of magical creatures. For example, he was the first one in his class to tame a hippogriff, which he did very excellently. He befriended the hippogriff, to such an extent that Buckbeak defended him when he was in danger. Harry has also shown on three occasions that he is quite competent at dealing with dragons. This is shown when he was able to help Hagrid take care of baby Norbert the dragon, outsmart the Hungarian Horntail in the Triwizard Tournament, and tame a half-blind dragon into helping the trio escape Gringotts by flying out on its back. He was also one of very few in his class who was able to see Thestrals, and had no trouble mounting his in June 1996. Harry was also good with House-elves, befriending the house-elf Dobby and eventually freeing him. This act of kindness made the little elf so loyal to him that he gave his life to save him. He also earned the respect and loyalty of Kreacher, a very difficult task. • Herbology: Harry attended N.E.W.T. Herbology classes. He achieved an 'Exceeds Expectations' on his O.W.L. exam, showing aptitude in the subject. In 1998, Harry was able to recognize a Snargaluff plant at the Lovegood House and knew to give it a wide berth of space. He also had knowledge of plants such as: Devil's Snare, Gillyweed, Venomous Tentacula, and Fanged Geranium from hands on experience. He could cast plant-related spells such as the Fire-Making Spell, the Severing Charm and the Herbivicus Charm. • Astronomy: Though not excellent at Astronomy, Harry was able to pass his O.W.L. exam with an 'Acceptable'. Although it was stated that he didn't finish his exam. This was due to the fact that he was distracted by Dolores Umbridge's attempt to arrest Hagrid, during the time the exam was being taken. It is not known if he was able to advance to the N.E.W.T class or not, seeing as he did not apply for advancement. • Wand versatility: Harry was able to use Hermione's wand after his was broken during the Attack at Godric's Hollow in 1997. He was able to use spells such as: the Wand-Lighting Charm, the Shield Charm, and the Severing Charm at full strength, despite not having won the wand's allegiance. He also gained the allegiance of Draco Malfoy's wand, the Elder Wand, and quite possibly Voldemort's wand by defeating the previous masters. • Genius intellect: Harry was reasonably intelligent, although nowhere near to the level of Hermione Granger. • Detective skills: Harry was a formidably talented investigator. While in school, he and his friends had a knack for solving difficult mysteries and discovering the truth despite all attempts by others to conceal it. Hermione generally finding the background information, while Harry put the pieces together to make a coherent picture. In his first year, Harry uncovered the truth about the Philosopher's Stone and saved it from Voldemort. Over the next six years, he would solve the mystery of the Chamber of Secrets and understand how the Basilisk's victims were attacked and why they did not die, but more importantly, he located the entrance of the Chamber and rightly supposed that the victim of the first opening of the Chamber was Moaning Myrtle; understand, with almost no clues, what Dumbledore wanted he and Hermione to do after spinning the Time Turner; find the truth about the prophecy; hunt down and destroy all of Voldemort's Horcruxes using his amazing deductive skills. During his sixth year, he also observed Dumbledore's memories about Voldemort and noticed things which would help him later. Harry's deductive skills also allowed him to uncover the mystery of the Deathly Hallows. He discovered that he mastered all three of them, when even Ron and Hermione were initially skeptical of their existence. Harry also had a knack for spotting things that others did not, and had a sharp eye for details. He was able to tell that Luna Lovegood had not been home in weeks by the state of her room, and he became suspicious when Dobby revealed that he had known that Harry was not getting any letters in 1992. His intelligence also allowed him to intuitively know that Draco Malfoy had been branded with the Dark Mark despite no solid proof, that Malfoy was using the Room of Requirement as a work shop, and that he was having Crabbe and Goyle use Polyjuice Potion in order to disguise themselves as girls while keeping watch outside the room. He also had an eye for details and a very good memory: for instance, even in a highly stressful situation, such as the Battle of Hogwarts, he was able to remember objects he saw over a year before in the Room of Hidden Things. • Resourcefulness: Harry showed resourcefulness in many different situations. In his first year, he impersonated the Bloody Baron. Harry did this in order to warn Peeves to stay away from the third floor that night so he wouldn't inconvenience the trio on their quest to save the Philosopher's Stone. In his second year, when encountering Professor McGonagall after hours, He lied and said that He and Ron were on their way to see Hermione in the hospital wing. Also, in his second year, he used a basilisk fang to destroy Riddle's Diary. In his fourth year, he managed to escape from Voldemort and his Death Eaters, taking Cedric Diggory's dead body with him. In his fifth year, while under interrogation from Umbridge, he relayed a coded message to Snape. He did this in an attempt to warn Snape and by extension the Order, that Voldemort had Sirius. In the same year, while surrounded by Death Eaters, Harry came up with the plan to smash the shelves in the Hall of Prophecy. This was a distraction so that He and the D.A. could try and escape. During the hunt for Horcruxes, he used the Godric Gryffindor's Sword as a way of retrieving Helga Hufflepuff's cup from the mounds of burning treasure and used a half-blind dragon as a means to escape from Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Harry was also cunning enough that the Sorting Hat heavily considered Sorting him into Slytherin house. • Leadership skills: While Harry never deliberately set out to be a leader to others, he had often taken charge when the situation required it. This began with his impulsive decision to find and warn Hermione about the presence of a troll in the school during the 1991 Halloween feast. It progressed to the point where over thirty students, some of them in their sixth and seventh years, respect him as a teacher in Dumbledore's Army, despite him being younger than they were. Dumbledore later noted that Harry was a superior leader to him. Dumbledore had deliberately sought power in his youth, and subsequently avoided anything more demanding than his role as Hogwarts headmaster, while Harry had leadership thrust upon. Harry accepted the burden of command, acknowledging his responsibilities towards those who "followed" him. He did this regardless of how uncomfortable he might feel about the prospect and coordinating his efforts against his enemies well, when left with no other option but to take control. Harry's natural talents later served the rest of the wizarding community of Great Britain. In 2007, he was promoted to the Head of the Auror Office at age 26 and was later made the Head of Magical Law Enforcement. His promotion to these positions of power at relatively young ages demonstrated Harry's natural talent as a commander. • Hope Inducement: Although it's more attributed to his reputation as The Boy Who Lived and Sybill Trelawney's prophecy, which highlighted his status as The Chosen One, Harry is no pushover in inspiring others to resist injustice, tyranny, domination and despair. He stood up for Neville, made quite an effort to make people realize how foolish fearing the name of Lord Voldemort was as much as Dumbledore as that only gave the Dark Lord an advantage over those who opposed him (at least until Lord Voldemort made his name a taboo that he had no choice but to abandon such a tactic), and helped the submissive Dobby to stand up against Malfoys. • Teaching skills: Harry demonstrated tremendous skill in teaching others. Having mastered many spells at a young age, Harry successfully taught them to others even when he was still a student himself. He would give proper instructions and corrections on how to perform many fields of magic, ranging from the relatively simplistic Disarming Charm to the highly advanced Patronus Charm. Harry's effectiveness as a teacher led many, some even older than him, to choose him over the Ministry-installed (but highly incompetent) teacher Dolores Umbridge. He even returned to Hogwarts to give occasional Defense Against the Dark Arts lectures as an adult and professional Auror. He kept his teaching aptitude in his later years and successfully instructed the members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force in the use of several formidable spells. Advertisement Weaknesses “ And yet you put more stock in a boy whose magic is mediocre, who is incapable of Occlumency, and has a direct insight into the Dark Lord's mind! „ ~ Severus Snape regarding Harry Potter. Despite being an extremely powerful wizard in his own right, Harry has a couple of weaknesses, some of which resulted from being forced to live alongside Dursleys; • Amateur Occlumens: Harry is known to "wear his heart on his sleeve", as Severus Snape cited. On many occasions he is unable to hide or control his emotions, especially anger and rage. Among other factors, this makes it difficult for him to master Occlumency. Harry failed in his Occlumency lessons with Snape and says outright during his months hiding in 12 Grimmauld Place that he "never got the hang of it". It must be stressed however, that Harry would've fare slightly better had he tutored by someone else who more considerate owing to Snape inability to move on from both his feelings toward Lily and grudge against James — which he projected through his constant mistreatment on Harry everytime they interact with one another — effectively put his ability to do such job into question. “ What? We can't do that! We've got to plan, we've got to figure it out! „ ~ Hermione Granger. Indecisiveness: Harry was often indecisive and, as Snape indeed pointed out, only escaped a number of sticky situations due to sheer dumb luck. Hence, he only defeated the mountain troll when Ron levitated its own weapon above its head and accidentally dropped it, escaped numerous obstacles in the Underground Chambers due to Ron and Hermione doing most of the work (apart from Quirrell taking out the troll guard before their arrival and flying keys obstacle), defeated Quirinus Quirrell due to his mother's hitherto unknown magic borne of sacrificial protection, defeated the Basilisk due to Fawkes' untimely invention and destroyed Tom Riddle's diary due to a conveniently placed fang, defeated the Hungarian Horntail due to receiving a state-of-the-art broom the previous year, and escaped from Little Hangleton due to the intervention of specters borne of the Reverse Spell. Going into the Second Wizarding War, Harry avoided harm that Lucius Malfoy would have inflicted on him had Severus Snape not called the Order of the Phoenix to arms, missed a Killing Curse by an inch when Albus Dumbledore appeared out of nowhere, escaped from Inferi because of a second intervention from Dumbledore (forgetting that Inferi hate light), prevented Draco Malfoy from besting him in direct combat by using a powerful and virtually unknown spell against him, survived two more Killing Curses first because of Hedwig's sacrifice and again because of a hitherto unheard of magical phenomenon, escaped the wrath of Corban Yaxley due to Hermione Granger blasting him away, escaped from Malfoy Manor thanks to Dobby's intervention, escaped from Gringotts due to the convenient presence of a Ukranian Ironbelly that Hermione decided to free, and escaped a band of Dementors after Aberforth Dumbledore outwitted several Death Eaters, and would have doubtlessly been overpowered by Lord Voldemort had it not been for a purely coincidental series of events that brought the Elder Wand into his possession, which Voldemort just happened to be wielding. In The Cursed Child, he needed to make his fight with Delphini unfair by pitting six against one in order to avoid being razed by her Dark magic. “ I mean, there — there must be some mistake. I mean … I can't be … a wizard. I'm Harry! Just Harry! „ ~ Harry's initially blatant lack of self-confidence and eloquence. • Amateur Social Intuition: Growing up alone and friendless, Harry Potter never developed on a social level since he was a toddler, so going into his first year at Hogwarts, he had very weak social confidence and was often unsure of how to interact with people outside of his comfort zone, often struggling to get his point across or conceal his current emotional state. His social skills were further compounded by his issues with trusting others, and he only ever confided in his two best friends, very rarely spending time with any other Hogwarts student without Ron and Hermione in the very least nearby. His lack of social confidence was the most extreme in his first year, where he awkwardly expressed his disbelief that he could possibly be special and also had an awkward first meeting with Ron and Hermione, coupled with the fact that until Halloween he never befriended anyone besides Ron, who was also insecure and socially awkward. He was often on the receiving end of arguments with other students, including Draco Malfoy, Ernie Macmillian, Zacharias Smith, and on a few occasions even Hermione Granger, though he was more eloquent when arguing with Dudley Dursley just prior to his fifth year. However, he did gain more social confidence later in life thanks to heartfelt support from Hagrid and others he bonded with in his one true home community Wizarding World; his high rank in the Ministry was indication of this. • Impulsiveness and Predictability: Harry had a tendency to tackle most situations and problems alone, rushing in headlong without considering his options. His designation as "The Chosen One" makes him feel pressured and unable to live up to the expectations of the Wizarding World. As the Sorting Hat mentioned, Harry's desire to prove himself may have helped create a need to be the hero. This trait has caused him to behave somewhat foolishly, as he did in the Triwizard Tournament's second task when he "rescued" Gabrielle Delacour when she had never been in any real danger. His impulsive thirst to prove himself took a more dangerous turn when Lord Voldemort exploited Harry's predictable nature to lure him into an ambush, resulting in Sirius Black's death. His impulsiveness also got him in huge trouble when he used a mysterious spell on Draco Malfoy, which not only got him numerous detentions, but also nearly claimed Malfoy's life had it not been for the timely intervention of Severus Snape. • Amateur Scholar: Though an intelligent and powerful wizard-in-training, Harry lacked academic curiosity, often relying on Hermione Granger, though fortunately never as much as Ron Weasley. This weakness was ultimately a minor one, however, as he usually received decent marks in his classes and received good results on his OWLs, and presumably got a GED following the Battle of Hogwarts. • Guilt Complex: Much like some war veterans, Harry frequently blamed himself for things out of his control. For instance, he blamed himself for the deaths of both Sirius Black and Cedric Diggory. In addition, he also felt guilt for using the severing spell (Sectumsempra) on Malfoy, when he did not know its effects. Charactor two: Hagrid Rubeus Hagrid is a fictional character in the Harry Potter book series written by J. K. Rowling. Hagrid is introduced in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as a half-giant and half man who is the gamekeeper and Keeper of Keys and Grounds of Hogwarts, the primary setting for the first six novels. In the third novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Hagrid is promoted to Care of Magical Creatures teacher, and later becomes a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Character development Hagrid was among the characters that Rowling says she created "the very first day".[1] She has explained the source of his name as "another old English word, meaning — if you were hagrid — it’s a dialect word — you’d had a bad night. Hagrid is a big drinker — he has a lot of bad nights."[2] In her article "Harry’s Fame", Rosemary Goring notes the Forest of Dean is an influence on Rowling’s work, and Hagrid is the only character that is "directly drawn from the Forest of Dean". According to Goring, Hagrid’s "dropped word-endings are a Chepstow speciality." She also notes that Hagrid is physically "modeled on the Welsh chapter of Hells Angels who’d swoop down on the town and hog the bar, 'huge mountains of leather and hair".[3] The character of Hagrid and conversations between him, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in his hut are expository through the series, due to the fact that the trio frequently discover things about Albus Dumbledore and Hogwarts by talking with Hagrid, as he has a habit of letting slip bits of information. He was also one of the first characters to imply that the idea of thinking of wizards as "pure-bloods" and "half-bloods" is a dated concept. Rowling has stated in an interview that Hagrid was in Gryffindor house during his time as a student.[4] When he comes into possession of an acromantula, he is expelled from Hogwarts as his pet is supposed to be the "monster of Slytherin". However, persuaded by Dumbledore (who at the time was Transfiguration teacher), Headmaster Armando Dippet agrees to train Hagrid as gamekeeper, allowing the boy to remain at Hogwarts. By the time Harry attends Hogwarts, Hagrid is also the Keeper of Keys and Grounds: the former, according to Rowling, means "that he will let you in and out of Hogwarts."[5] Part of his job includes leading the first years across the lake in boats, upon their initial arrival at Hogwarts. Appearances Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Rubeus Hagrid is introduced in the opening chapter of the first novel. Following the death of James and Lily Potter, Dumbledore entrusts Hagrid with rescuing the infant Harry from his parents’ house after they have been murdered by Lord Voldemort. When Minerva McGonagall expresses her concern about the fact that it was Hagrid who would carry Harry to the Dursleys', Dumbledore says that he would trust Hagrid with his life, a fact that is demonstrated several times during the series, as Dumbledore frequently asks him to carry out secret tasks. 12 years later, he is tasked to bring the Sorcerer's Stone from Gringotts to Hogwarts, and provides the three-headed dog Fluffy to guard it. Dumbledore also gives him the task of locating Harry, helping him to find his bearings in the wizarding world and to buy his school things. Hagrid is the first member of the Hogwarts staff to be introduced to Harry before he began attending the school. Hagrid later becomes friends with Ron and Hermione as well. Later in the book, a hooded person (Quirinus Quirrell in disguise) gives him a dragon egg to elicit details about Fluffy. Hagrid lets slip to Harry, Ron, and Hermione that the way to get past Fluffy is to play music, for which they use the flute Hagrid himself carved for Harry, which allows them to pursue the potential thief. The three also assist Hagrid after the dragon egg hatches, by helping to remove the baby dragon Norbert, who is taken to live in a dragon sanctuary in Romania where Ron’s older brother, Charlie Weasley, works. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Readers first discover why Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts in the second novel. It is revealed that Hagrid was a student at Hogwarts at the same time as Tom Riddle Jr, the wizard who later became Lord Voldemort. Hagrid was expelled during his third year, after being caught in the company of Aragog, a dangerous acromantula: this already serious crime seemed worse than it was, due to the belief that the acromantula was "The Monster of Slytherin," and that Hagrid had released it from the Chamber of Secrets and, either intentionally or unintentionally, allowed it to attack and petrify (and in one case, kill) other students. Aragog escapes into the dark forest and starts a colony of spiders. The belief of Hagrid's guilt was encouraged by Tom Riddle, the actual criminal, who had been using the true monster (a basilisk) to attack students, and who had framed Hagrid to prevent the school from being closed, because he didn't want to return to the orphange. During the events of the second book, the Basilisk is unleashed once again and Hagrid is sent to the prison of Azkaban, as he is believed again to be responsible for the attacks. However, before being arrested, Hagrid tells Harry and Ron to "follow the spiders", so that they can meet Aragog and discover the identity of the true monster. After Harry defeats the Basilisk, it is revealed that Ginny Weasley is acting under the influence of Tom Riddle's diary, and Hagrid is freed from prison. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Following the resignation of Silvanus Kettleburn, who, according to Dumbledore, wanted to spend time with his remaining limbs, Hagrid is assigned to teach the subject of Care of Magical Creatures in the third novel. He is also allowed to perform magic again since his name has been cleared after the events of the previous book.[6] During his first class, in which he introduces the hippogriffs to third-years, one of the beasts, Buckbeak, attacks Draco Malfoy after the boy insults it. Although Dumbledore manages to prove that Hagrid is innocent, the Ministry of Magic sentences Buckbeak to death. Thus, Hagrid's classes become extremely boring, and Harry, Ron, and Hermione spend some time looking information that would help Hagrid in Buckbeak’s defence. Near the end of the book Hermione and Harry use a time-turner to save Buckbeak from death and Sirius Black from the Dementor's Kiss. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire In the fourth novel it is revealed that Hagrid is of mixed wizard and giant parentage, his mother having been the giantess Fridwulfa, who left his wizard father when Hagrid was a baby. Since giants have a reputation for being brutal, and were once allies of Voldemort, Hagrid keeps his parentage a secret and allows people to imagine other reasons for his great size (drinking a bottle of Skele-Gro when he did not need it). Hagrid’s parentage is exposed in the Daily Prophet by Rita Skeeter, who portrays him as dangerous (because of his fascination for aggressive creatures) and incompetent. Hagrid is gravely affected by this and attempts to resign from his post as teacher, though Dumbledore does not accept his resignation. During the novel, Hagrid develops a romantic interest with Olympe Maxime – another half-giant witch and Headmistress of the French magic school Beauxbatons. Hagrid is also one of the very few people who, since the beginning, believes Harry’s word that he did not apply to enter the Triwizard Tournament. Later in the book, Alastor Moody (impersonated by Barty Crouch Jr) suggests Hagrid should show Harry that the first task of the Tournament would involve dragons. Hagrid also provides Blast-Ended Skrewts for the third task. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Hagrid is absent during the first part of the fifth novel. The character later reveals to Harry, Ron and Hermione that he and Madame Maxime travelled across Europe together on a mission from the Order, planning to find giants and convince them to ally themselves with the good side and with Dumbledore; however, Death Eaters also find the giants and managed to get them to Voldemort’s side. Hagrid is attacked by giants during the mission, and saved by Maxime. Hagrid and Maxime eventually part on the journey home because of Maxime’s exasperation with Grawp, Hagrid’s half-brother whom he had found and was attempting to bring home with them. Grawp, who wanted to stay with the giants, seriously injured Hagrid. Hagrid introduces his half-brother to Harry and Hermione, and asks them to take care of him after he leaves Hogwarts. High Inquisitor of Hogwarts Dolores Umbridge supervises the classes of all the members of the Hogwarts staff, including Hagrid's, and she looks for an excuse to fire him, as Hagrid is close to Dumbledore. Towards the end of the book, Umbridge and other Ministry officials attempt to arrest Hagrid. The latter manages to escape, but Professor McGonagall is injured whilst trying to defend him. Finally, with Dumbledore’s post as Headmaster restored, Hagrid returns to Hogwarts. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince In the sixth novel, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are no longer students of Care of Magical Creatures, and Hagrid is both angry and disappointed with them during the first part of the book, but he soon realises that it is not because they do not like him. Later in the novel, Aragog dies, and Hagrid risks his life to recover the acromantula's body to give it a proper funeral. After the funeral, he and Horace Slughorn drink excessive amounts of Firewhisky, and Harry takes advantage of this situation (under the influence of Felix Felicis potion, otherwise known as "liquid luck") to retrieve a certain memory from Slughorn. Towards the end of the book, Death Eaters attack Hogwarts and, while trying to fight them, Hagrid’s hut is set on fire. During Dumbledore’s funeral, Hagrid is seen carrying the Headmaster’s body. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows In the seventh novel, Hagrid is part of the Order of the Phoenix delegation assigned to remove Harry from the Dursleys’ home to the magic-protected Burrow. Hagrid takes Harry on the flying motorcycle he inherited from Sirius but the plan goes awry when the Order delegation is ambushed by Death Eaters. The pair narrowly make it to the Burrow after being attacked by Voldemort himself. After attending Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour’s wedding reception, Hagrid presumably returns to his job at Hogwarts. Hagrid is next seen near the beginning of the climax of the book, after having been driven into hiding in the mountains with Grawp and Fang to escape the new Death Eater-controlled regime at the school due to Hagrid hosting a "Support Harry Potter" party in his hut. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Hagrid attempts to come to the defence of Aragog's carnivorous children, who have been driven out of the Forbidden Forest by the Death Eaters and are now attacking both Hogwarts defenders and Death Eaters indiscriminately, but is carried off by a swarm of them. He later turns up, captive in the Death Eaters’ camp, when Harry sacrifices himself to Voldemort. Hagrid is forced to carry Harry back to the school, not realising that Harry has survived again, and en route accuses the watching Centaurs of not doing enough to help. The Centaurs soon afterward join the fray and Hagrid takes part in the second half of the battle, felling his main nemesis among the Death Eaters, the magical-creature executioner Walden Macnair, and ultimately being one of the first to congratulate Harry after he defeated Voldemort. According to Rowling, the scene in the final book in which Hagrid is seen carrying Harry’s apparently dead body is very significant as "Hagrid brings Harry from the Dursleys. He takes him into the wizarding world … He was sort of his guardian and his guide ... And now I wanted Hagrid to be the one to lead Harry out of the forest."[7] Rowling also commented that Hagrid was never in danger of dying, as she "always had that picture in my head of the huge gigantic Hagrid walking through the forest crying with Harry in his arms".[8] Epilogue Nineteen years after Voldemort’s defeat, Hagrid is still at Hogwarts, though it is not clear in what capacity (he would be 87 years old by this time), and invites Harry’s young son Albus to his hut for tea, just as he had once done for Harry himself signifying that Harry and Hagrid are still close. During an interview in 2007, when asked if Hagrid did marry, Rowling answered that Hagrid developed a relationship with a giantess but it did not work out.[9] Film portrayal Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane has portrayed Hagrid in all of the film adaptations of the Harry Potter novels.[10] Rowling had Coltrane first in mind for the role and when asked who was the top of her list responded "RobbieColtraneforHagrid" all in one quick breath.[11][12] Coltrane has commented that to be part of the Harry Potter films is "a fantastic thing to be involved in."[13] Rowling gave Coltrane some background on Hagrid [14] She also stated that, "Robbie is just perfect for Hagrid because Hagrid is a very loveable character, quite likeable, quite comic [...] but he had to have – you really do have to sense – a certain toughness underneath [...] and I think Robbie does that perfectly."[12] English rugby union footballer Martin Bayfield has portrayed Hagrid as a stunt performer in longer shots due to his large size to emphasise Hagrid’s height. Bayfield also appeared as a young Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.[15] Characterisation Outward appearance In Philosopher’s Stone, Hagrid is mentioned as being twice as tall as the average man and nearly five times as wide but in the film, he is portrayed as being and in later books he is said to be three times as wide. Hagrid is known for his thick West Country accent. Being a half-giant, he is less vulnerable to jinxes and spells than full-humans. In Order of the Phoenix, when Umbridge and some other wizards come to remove him from Hogwarts he fights back. They try to jinx and stun him, but the spells just bounce off him because of giant-inherited resistance to magic. Hagrid also shows this resilience at the end of Half-Blood Prince, during the chapter Flight of the Prince, withstanding a Death Eater’s powerful curses. Some potions are also ineffective with him, such as Polyjuice Potion, which is designed for human-only use.[16] Personality He has a friendly, softhearted personality and is easily driven to tears, as seen in his very first scene, when he drops Harry off at the Dursleys’ in Philosopher’s Stone. He is very loyal to his peers, especially Dumbledore, to whom he refers as the greatest wizard in the world multiple times. As first seen in Philosopher’s Stone, he becomes extremely angry whenever anyone insults Dumbledore around him (a mistake made by Vernon Dursley, who called Dumbledore a "crackpot old fool"). He is also very loyal to Harry, suffered several times during the series because of this loyalty, and had to go into hiding twice to avoid prison. Rowling says of Hagrid, "Hagrid was always supposed to be this almost elemental force. He’s like the king of the forest, or the Green Man. He’s this semi-wild person who lives on the edge of the forest".[17] Magical abilities and skills Following his expulsion from Hogwarts, the Ministry of Magic broke Hagrid’s oak wand and forbade him to perform magic.[18] Hagrid keeps the pieces of his wand in a pink umbrella, and performs small spells from time to time; however, he was technically forbidden to do magic until the third book, and since he is not a fully qualified wizard, he "will always be a bit inept" as compared to other adult wizards,[6] but "occasionally surprises everyone, himself included, by bringing off more impressive bits of magic".[19] He also has magical abilities that stem from his giant blood. For example, in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, many of the stunning spells thrown at him by Ministry officials simply bounce off him. Family Grawp Grawp is the giant half-brother of Hagrid. Grawp and Hagrid were born of the same mother, the giantess Fridwulfa.[20] Grawp is about tall, which Hagrid claims is small for a giant. His knuckles are the size of cricket balls (~225 mm in circumference). The other giants were bullying Grawp, and this is a factor in Hagrid’s decision to bring him to the Forbidden Forest. Big and dim, he only knows a few words in English and his manners are wild and unpredictable. At first, Grawp seems indifferent to his brother’s attempts to civilise him, preferring to spend his time tearing down trees. After Hagrid leaves Hogwarts to avoid being imprisoned, he leaves Grawp in the care of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Much to their surprise, when they find themselves trapped in the forest during a confrontation with the local centaur population, Grawp inadvertently manages to divert the centaurs' attention from Harry and Hermione while looking for Hagrid, whom he calls 'Hagger'. In the Half-Blood Prince, Grawp is moved to the mountains, where he is apparently progressing much better. He also attends Dumbledore’s funeral with Hagrid, much more civil and calm than before, and dressed formally. He also appears to understand emotions, at least to some extent, as he pats Hagrid’s head to comfort him. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Grawp, Hagrid, and Fang go into hiding after Hagrid throws a "Support Harry Potter" party and it is implied that Grawp helped them all escape. He is the only giant fighting against the Death Eaters in the Battle of Hogwarts, probably in an attempt to protect Hagrid, as he frequently calls his name while fighting the Death Eaters. Grawp participates in the victory celebration over Voldemort’s defeat (albeit from a window, since he is too big to fit into the hall), and the Hogwarts students show their appreciation by tossing food into his laughing mouth. In the film adaptation of the fifth book Grawp is computer-generated using a new "soul capturing" process from Image Metrics.[21] Andrew Whitehead spent 18 months working on the giant Grawp for the film.[22] The voice of Grawp is performed by Tony Maudsley.[23] Parents In the Goblet of Fire, the truth about Hagrid’s parents is revealed: his father, who is never named in the stories, married a giantess, Fridwulfa. Fridwulfa left Rubeus to his father’s care after his birth; according to Hagrid, she was not very maternal. Later she gave birth to Grawp. She died long before Hagrid returned to the giants in the Order of the Phoenix. Hagrid describes his father as "a tiny little man" whom he could pick up with one hand and place on the dresser at the age of six. Hagrid clearly felt great affection for him; in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, he says that his father’s death when Hagrid was in third year at Hogwarts was one of his saddest memories. Hagrid's pets Hagrid keeps and has kept a variety of pets, including some which the Wizarding community considers impossible to domesticate. They are not always wrong. Rowling has said that Hagrid has little interest in tamer magical creatures because of the lack of a challenge,[citation needed] although he has a large but cowardly dog, a boarhound named Fang. Hagrid’s love of dangerous magical creatures is central to the plot of several books of the series. Aragog Aragog was an Acromantula—an enormous, sentient spider capable of speech—who made a unique clicking noise as he moved in search of prey. Hagrid raised him from an egg as a Hogwarts student, keeping him inside a cupboard. In his third year at Hogwarts, Hagrid was caught talking to Aragog in the dungeons by Tom Riddle, who alleged that Aragog was the "Monster of Slytherin," and that Hagrid had opened the Chamber of Secrets. In fact, it was Riddle who had opened the Chamber, and the monster was actually a basilisk. After Hagrid was expelled, Aragog lived in the Forbidden Forest. Hagrid found him a mate, Mosag, with whom Aragog bore an entire colony of giant spiders. He remained grateful to Hagrid for his entire life, and kept his carnivorous children from attacking him when he came to visit. However, he did not extend this courtesy to other creatures and people; he allowed his children to attack Harry, Ron, and Fang when they encountered him in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Hagrid led them to Aragog by giving them the cryptic advice, "follow the spiders." It was Aragog who told Harry and Ron that he was not the Monster of Slytherin, but another creature, that unlike Aragog, was born in the castle, and which spiders so fear above all others that they never speak of it or give its name, despite Hagrid's numerous inquiries. Though Aragog allowed his children to attack Harry, Ron, and Fang, they were saved at the last minute by Mr. Weasley’s flying car, which had been lost in the forest months before. Aragog remained in the Forbidden Forest for the rest of his life, but eventually died of old age in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Hagrid retrieved Aragog’s body from the forest so that he could give him a proper burial, fearing that his children would devour his body. From that point on, the spider colony was the only part of the Forbidden Forest that Hagrid could not enter safely. Aragog’s children returned in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows during the Battle at Hogwarts; having been driven from the forest, they began attacking Death Eaters and Hogwarts’ inhabitants indiscriminately. Hagrid’s love of the spiders endangered himself and others because he tried to protect them; the spiders thanked Hagrid by capturing him and taking him to Voldemort. Aragog was voiced by Julian Glover in the film adaptation of the Chamber of Secrets. Buckbeak Buckbeak, along with eleven other hippogriffs, is introduced during one of Hagrid’s Care of Magical Creatures classes. Hagrid explains that hippogriffs are very calm, powerful, proud creatures, but are sensitive and demand respect. Harry successfully approaches Buckbeak, who allows him to ride him around the paddock. Draco Malfoy, in an arrogant attempt to show up his school nemesis, endeavours to approach Buckbeak as well. It becomes obvious that Draco neither listens to nor cares about Hagrid's warnings about the hippogriffs’ sensitivity, as he makes contemptuous remarks about Buckbeak. Quickly angered, Buckbeak slashes Draco’s arm with his claws. Pretending to be injured much more severely than he truly is, Draco persuades his father, Lucius Malfoy, to use his political power to sentence Buckbeak to death. Hagrid’s numerous appeals fail, and members of the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures come to Hogwarts to execute Buckbeak. With the use of a Time-Turner, Hermione and Harry free Buckbeak (they believed him earlier to have been executed, but it was revealed the executioner only swung his axe into the fence in anger, in the film he does this to a pumpkin) and rescue Sirius Black from the tower in which he is being held before being handed over to the Dementors. Sirius escapes with Buckbeak and flies to safety. During most of Harry’s fourth year, Sirius and Buckbeak hide in a cave in the mountains above Hogsmeade. After this, they move to Number 12 Grimmauld Place, whereupon Buckbeak stays in Sirius’ mother’s former room. When Kreacher wants to lure Sirius away briefly, he wounds Buckbeak. In Half-Blood Prince, Harry inherits Buckbeak, and allows Hagrid to look after him again. To avoid suspicion from the Ministry of Magic, he is given the alias "Witherwings". A fiercely loyal creature, Buckbeak chases Severus Snape away from Harry by slashing his claws at the end of the book. Buckbeak also features in the Battle of Hogwarts at the end of the Deathly Hallows leading the Hogwarts’ Thestrals against Voldemort’s giants. Fang Fang is a large boarhound (portrayed in the films by a Neapolitan Mastiff) that, aside from his enormous size, appears to be an entirely ordinary dog. While Fang's appearance is intimidating, he is, in Hagrid's words, "a bloody coward." Boisterous and loving with people he knows, he seems to enjoy licking Harry, Ron, or Hermione around the face or ears. In the Philosopher’s Stone he accompanies Harry, Hagrid, Draco, and Hermione into the Forbidden Forest to look for an injured unicorn. In the following book, the Chamber of Secrets, Harry and Ron take Fang into the forest where he is scared stiff of both the gigantic acromantula and Mr Weasley’s flying car. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, an escaping Death Eater sets fire to Hagrid’s hut while Fang is inside; Hagrid enters the flaming hut, slings Fang over his shoulder, and carries him to safety. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Fang and Hagrid participate in the Battle of Hogwarts; though Fang's exact involvement is not clear. He is last seen running away after a shattered vase frightens him. It's implied that Fang survives, as Hagrid is not seen mourning him at anytime. It's unknown if Fang is still alive when Harry's children come to Hogwarts. Fluffy Fluffy is a giant three-headed dog provided by Hagrid to guard the trapdoor leading to the underground chamber where the Philosopher’s Stone was hidden until the end of Philosopher’s Stone. The only known way to get past Fluffy is to lull him to sleep by playing music. Fluffy is based on Cerberus, the three-headed dog from Greek Mythology that guards the gates to the underworld. As with Fluffy, Cerberus was lulled to sleep with music by Orpheus. In Philosopher’s Stone, Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville accidentally run into Fluffy whilst hiding from Peeves, who was attempting to give them away to caretaker Argus Filch, who was searching for them. On Halloween, Harry and Ron witness Snape entering the door to Fluffy’s chamber, and for the next few days having a pronounced limp. Harry also overhears him saying "How are you meant to keep your eyes on all three heads at once?" to Filch. However, it is later revealed that he followed then Hogwarts Defence Against the Dark Arts professor Quirinus Quirrell into the chamber. While Fluffy is guarding the Philosopher’s Stone, Professor Quirrell penetrates Fluffy’s defences by playing a harp, in order to access the trapdoor, while Harry uses a flute that had been given to him by Hagrid. Rowling was asked in an interview what happened to Fluffy after he was no longer needed to protect the Stone. Her reply was that Fluffy was released into the Forbidden Forest. Norberta Norberta, previously named Norbert, is a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon that Hagrid had acquired as an egg from a mysterious, hooded stranger in the Hog's Head, who turned out to be Professor Quirrell. Hagrid helps the dragon hatch from the egg. Norberta becomes very dangerous and much bigger in the weeks following. Norberta bit Ron’s hand, causing him to require medical treatment due to the venom in her fangs. Harry, Ron, and Hermione finally persuade Hagrid to send the dragon to Ron’s older brother Charlie, who is studying dragons in Romania. In the Deathly Hallows, Charlie reveals to Hagrid that "Norbert" is actually female and had been renamed Norberta. Charlie adds that female Norwegian Ridgeback dragons "are more vicious..." which explained Norberta's biting and dangerous behavior as a baby. Hermione Granger Born 2 September to 29 September 1979[1][2] Species Human (Wizardkind) Blood status Muggle-born "Books! And cleverness! There are more important things! — Friendship! And Bravery!" — Hermione Granger[src] Hermione Jean Granger is a character in the Harry Potter book series. She is a Muggle-born witch who attended Hogwarts. Hermione is a very academic and gifted student, very eager to show her intelligence but unafraid to use her courage to stand up for what she thought was right. She is friends with Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. Early life Hermione Jean Grangerwas born in September 1979, the only child of her parents who were Muggles. They chose her first name because they wanted to show how educated they were, a trait that Hermione inherited. At the age of eleven, she found out she was a witch and was accepted to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hermione immediately began reading everything she could about the wizarding world. Philosopher's Stone Hermione first appears when she is trying to help Neville Longbottom find his pet toad on the Hogwarts Express. She enters Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley's compartment and they find her rather condescending after watching Ron's spell fail.[7] When she is about to go into the Sorting ceremony, she goes through every spell in her memory in case she needs them. Hermione is sorted into Gryffindor, but the Sorting Hat thought about putting her in Ravenclaw. She proves that she is academically gifted but her eagerness annoys people like Professor Snape. However, she struggles to succeed in her first Flying lesson. She is very strict about the school's rules and she tries to stop Harry flying without their teacher present to save Neville's Remembrall but he ignores her. Later, Hermione overhears Harry's plan to sneak out at midnight and duel Draco. She stays up late to stop Harry and Ron but they won't listen to her so she decides to go and keep them out of trouble. They realise it is a set-up and Filch is there to catch them. They run away into the out-of-bounds third-floor corridor and discover Fluffy who she notices is guarding a trapdoor. On Hallowe'en, Hermione condescendingly tells Ron the correct way to pronounce the Levitation Charm. Hermione overhears him complaining about her and runs away crying. She doesn't attend the Hallowe'en feast, but a troll is let loose in the school near the bathroom she is hiding in. Harry and Ron go and save her by using the Levitation Charm and knock the troll out. Professor McGonagall shouts at them for going looking for the troll, but Hermione lies to her that she was the one looking for the troll and Harry and Ron saved her. After this, they strike up a friendship. Hermione starts helping them with their homework and lends Harry her copy of Quidditch Through the Ages. At Harry's first Quidditch match, his Nimbus 2000 broomstick begins bucking. Hermione searches for the person cursing it and deduces it is Professor Snape. It is actually Professor Quirrell, but setting fire to Snape's cape knocks Professor Quirrell over and saves Harry anyway, who catches the Snitch and wins the game. Hermione believes that it is Snape who is trying to kill Harry. She learn through Hagrid that Fluffy is guarding a secret belonging to Dumbledore and Nicolas Flamel. They attempt to search for information about Flamel but can't find anything. She goes home to spend the Christmas holidays with her parents. A few weeks later, she and Harry finally find a book about the Philosopher's Stone and deduce Fluffy is guarding it because Voldemort wants to steal the Stone with the help of Professor Snape. In spring, she finds out that Hagris had a dragon egg which she thinks is a very bad idea. They persuade Hagrid to send a note to Charlie Weasley and let him take Norbert.[15] She and Harry sneak out at night to take Norbert to the Astronomy Tower and they are caught by Mrs Norris on their way back to bed. Professor McGonagall gives them detentions along with Draco who was trying to catch them, and Neville who tried to warn them. The detention is held at night in the Forbidden Forest as Hagrid needs help searching for a missing unicorn. She is teamed up with Hagrid, while the others go their own way. Harry and Draco find the unicorn, but it is already dead and the cloaked figure that is drinking it's blood tries to kill Harry. Harry believes it is Voldemort but Hermione assures him he is safe under the protection of Dumbledore. Harry then decides to ask Hagrid who gave him the dragon egg. He owns up to be being very drunk and telling the stranger who gave it to him how to put Fluffy to sleep. Knowing that stranger is going to try and steal the Philosopher's Stone, they decide they have to save it on their own. Neville tries to stop them but Hermione subdues him with a Full Body-Bind Curse. Fluffy is already sleeping when they arrive, so they quickly go through the trapdoor and fall into a Devil's Snare. Hermione panics because she can't remember a way out of the Snare, but Ron encourages her and she remembers that she can use bluebell flames. Over the course their journey through the underground chambers, they face and pass several challenges. Eventually, they reach a giant chessboard while Hermione takes the position of a rook for a game of wizard chess. Ron leads them to victory but has to sacrifice himself as the Knight and stay behind. Hermione and Harry continue on together and face a potion challenge. She solves the riddle and finds the potion they need to take to pass through a door of flames, but it is only enough for one person and she has to stay behind. Hermione and Ron head back to warn the teacherswhile Harry successfully saves the Philosopher's Stone from theft by Quirrell and Voldemort. Hermione gets 110% in her Charms exam and is top of her year.[17][18] She attends the End-of-Year Feast and is awarded House points for helping save the Stone, and along with Harry, Ron and Neville's points, Gryffindor steal victory from Slytherin in the House Cup for the first time in seven years. Hermione celebrates with her friends. Chamber of Secrets Hermione spends the summer doing her schoolwork. She also sends letters to her friends but Harry's are intercepted by Dobby. She and Ron are concerned about Harry when he doesn't send anything back, so Ron tells her that he is going to go round to Harry's house and find out why. Hermione writes back to Ron a few days later with the date she is going to Diagon Alley. Ron has rescued Harry from the Dursleys and they agree to go that day with her. At the start of the shopping trip, she introduces Harry and Ron to her parents. The trio go shopping together for an hour and buy ice-creams, before reuniting with everyone else in Flourish and Blotts. Hermione is very excited when she finds out Gilderoy Lockhart is holding a book signing there that afternoon. During the event, she sees Harry and Draco arguing and intervenes. Draco insults both her and Ron and she has to hold Ron back when he tries to fight Draco. Their fathers, Arthur and Lucius see what is happening and also fight until Hagrid breaks it up. The day that they return to Hogwarts, Hermione is angry to find out that Harry and Ron have broken wizarding laws by flying there in the Ford Anglia and is openly disappointed with him when they reunite in the common room, frowning at them in while everyone else is celebrating them for being "brilliant". She is glad when Ron is sent a Howler.[21] However, she is happy when it is announced that Lockhart is going to be teaching at Hogwarts. During their first lesson, he gives a test on himself and shows everyone how incompetent he is when he unleashes and loses control of Cornish pixies. He runs away and leaves her to round the pixies up with a Freezing Charm. Blinded by her crush on Lockhart, she claims he did it all on purpose so they would figure it out and learn what to do with experience. Hermione and Ron watch Harry during the first Quidditch training session. They go down onto the pitch when the Slytherin team show up and take control of the pitch to train their new Seeker, Draco. She taunts Draco by pointing out that the others players get in for their talent instead of bribery like he did so he calls her a "Mudblood". Hermione doesn't understand the word but everyone else is obviously offended and Ron tries to curse Draco using a Slug-vomiting Charm which bounces back and hits Ron. Harry and Hermione take Ron to Hagrid's Hut for help and she learns that the word is derogatory. Hagrid tells her that she shouldn't pay any attention to insuots like that because she is a very skilled witch. Hermione is asked to attend a Deathday Party for Nearly Headless Nick by Harry which she looks forward to because living people don't usually attend them. However they find it very dull and she upsets Moaning Myrtle despite trying to avoid her. They decide to leave early and on the way back, Harry hears a voice that she and Ron can't hear. They track the voice to a corridor where a Petrified Mrs Norris is hanging by her tail near a warning that "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the Heir beware". Hermione tries to find out wwhat the Chamber of Secrets is and she asks Professor Binns during a History of Magic lesson, who tells her it is not real. However, she notices spiders acting strange and fleeing the school as though they are in a hurry. The school consider Harry to be the Heir of Slytherin after he is accussed of attacking Mrs Norris, so they work together to figure out the real Heir and decide on Draco. Hermione hatches a plan to use Polyjuice Potion so they can talk to Draco under the guise of Slytherin students and prove he is the Heir. She uses Professor Lockhart's vanity against him so that he gives her permission to get a book out of the restricted section of the Hogwarts library. Obtainining the recipe for a Polyjuice Potion recipe, she starts collecting the ingredients. When she hears a student has been Petrified, she and Ron begin putting the Polyjuice Potion together. Harry learns that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened before from Dobby, and they believe it might have been Draco's father Lucius who opened it the first time. She and her friends join Professor Lockhart's Duelling Club. Harry speaks Parseltongue in front of everyone and she and Ron have to tell Harry that it is bad thing as speakers of language have always been associated with the Dark Arts. She is worried that the school will take his ability to speak it as proof that Harry is the Heir of Slytherin. Hermione, Ron and Harry stay at the school for the holidays when they hear that Draco is also staying. Hermione collects a piece of what she thought was Millicent Bulstrode's hair for the Polyjuice Potion, which turns out to be her cat's hair. It transforms her into a half-cat, half-human so Hermione has to stay in the Hospital Wing until February. Harry and Ron go ahead without her and realise that Draco isn't the Heir of Slytherin. Harry finds Tom Riddle's Diary which names Hagrid as the person responsible for first opening of the Chamber of Secrets. They do not say anything to Hagrid but decide they will if anyone else is Petrified. Hermione continues to research what the monster in the Chamber could be and during a visit to the library, concludes it is a Basilisk. She writes down her findings on a piece of paper and she uses a mirror to navigate through the corridors. The mirror saves her life when she crosses the Basilisk and sees it through her mirror but she is Petrified by its gaze. Harry later learns that Tom Riddle is Voldemort, that he opened the Chamber for the first time when he was a student and that Hermione was actually targeted by the Basilisk when she was Petrified. Tom Riddle had worked out who Harry was and wanted to encourage him to keep looking for Chamber of Secrets if his friend's life depended on it. Harry and Ron were able to find the Chamber of Secrets after they found her research and save the school. She is brought out of her Petrified state with a Mandrake Restorative Draught. At a feast to celebrate, she is upset when Dumbledore announces that their examinations have been cancelled. Prisoner of Azkaban Adoption of Crookshanks During the summer holidays, Ron sends Hermione a letter to warn her against phoning Harry at Privet Drive after he had upset Vernon Dursley by doing so. In July, she goes on a holiday to France where she rewrites her History of Magic homework to include what she learnt there. She sends Harry a birthday card and a Broomstick Servicing Kit and hopes Harry will go shopping for school with her when she returns. At the end of August, she stays at the Leaky Cauldron with Harry and the Weasleys. During their shopping trip, they visit the Magical Menagerie after her parents gave her money to buy an owl. While she is browsing, a ginger cat called Crookshanks pounces at Scabbers. When she hears how long Crookshanks has been waiting to be adopted, she decides to buy him to Ron's dismay. On the train to Hogwarts, shares a compartment with Harry, Ron and a sleeping new Professor, Remus Lupin. She figures out that he will be teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts. Hermione is shocked to learn that the escaped convict Sirius Black wants to kill Harry and warns him to be careful. While they talk about Black, a sneakoscope starts shreeching to signify someone untrustworthy is nearby but she thinks it is faulty. When they talk about Hogsmeade, she shares how excited she is to visit historical places like the Shrieking Shack. However, she is apprenhensive when Harry reveals he didn't have permission to go and tells him not to leave the safety of Hogwarts. She is confused when the train suddenly stops. After Harry is attacked by a dementor, she helps him get back up and into his seat. Using a Time-Turner Professor McGonagall takes Hermione to her office to speak with her privately. She receives a Time-Turner so she can secretly double up on her classes. She is stunned with the news that Hagrid will be teaching Care of Magical Creatures and gives him her congratulations. When she recieves her timetable the next day, Ron notices that she has three classes taking place at the same time. When he questions her, she snaps that she has already sorted it with McGonagall. During her first Divination lesson, she is horrified to learn that books won't help her be successful in the class. Hermione is not impressed by Trelawney's predictions and points out her prediction that Harry has a "deadly enemy" is obvious. She also disagrees with her when she says Harry's tea leaves are in the shape of the Grim. She tells Hermione that she has "very little aura". In her Transfiguration lesson, she tells McGonagall that Trelawney predicted Harry's death and laughs when the professor criticises Trelawney. Hermione stays skeptical even after Harry reveals he has crossed paths with a Grim and Ron tells her his uncle Bilius died after encountering one. She believes that Arithmancy is a better class and she will stop studying Divination if it didn't improve, but Ron is confused because she couldn't have had an Arithmancy lesson yet. She attends her Care of Magical Creatures lesson without talking to Ron. She is one of the first students in the class to approach the Hippogriffs. Later, she helps Hagrid open a gate when Draco is attacked by Buckbeak. She is worried that Hagrid will be sacked over the incident so the trio visit his Hut. Hermione is upset when she learns Draco is faking his pain to get Hagrid in trouble. The next day, Hermione wants to help Neville who is struggling in Potions class. Professor Snape refuses to let her fix his potion and warns Neville that he will feed the Shrinking Solution to his pet toad at the end of the lesson. When the potion has the right effect on the toad, Snape takes house points from Gryffindor as he knew Hermione had to have helped. On the way to Defence Against the Dark Arts, she disappears. When she reappears out of breath, the seam of her bag has split. Harry isn't surprised as it was crammed full of books but he is confused that the books are for lessons she didn't even have that day. Hermione impresses Professor Lupin in Defence Against the Dark Arts for correctly describing what a Boggart is, but is disappointed when Harry gets to answer the next question. He rewards her with house points at the end of the lesson. She thinks Lupin is a very good teacher. In October, Hermione disapproves of Harry's plan to sneak out to Hogsmeade on the first weekend. She is distracted when Crookshanks leaps into her lap with a giant spider in his mouth. Ron warns her to keep the cat away from Scabbers in his bag, but the cat pounces at the bag and begins clawing at it. Scabbers runs out to hide under a chair where Ron and Hermione quickly grab their pets. After an argument, Ron avoids talking to Hermione the next day. Hermione is very skeptical when Lavender Brown informs her that her pet rabbit has been killed on the day that Trelawney apparently predicted. She points out that it does not logically match what Trelawney said which Ron tells her is insensitive. She and Ron make up after Professor McGonagall refuses to let Harry go to Hogsmeade and they visit the village together. They brings back lots of sweets from Honeydukes for him. After the Hallowe'en feast, Hermione returns to the common room only to discover the Fat Lady has been attacked by Sirius Black. Hermione, presuming that Black wanted to get Harry, considers it very lucky he attacked on the one night Harry was going to be out at the feast. During their next Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson, the third years are surprised when Professor Snape is there to substitute for Professor Lupin and decideds to teach them about werewolves. Hermione tries to tell Snape that they are not due to learn about werewolves yet but is told to be quiet. She tries to answer a question but Snape deliberately ignores her. He is not happy when she shouts out the answer anyway, costing house points for Gryffindor, although Ron stands up for her and tells Snape not to ask questions if he didn't want an answer. During the first Quidditch game of the year, Hermione steps in to help Harry when the heavy rain prevents him from seeing properly. She uses the Impervius spell on his glasses so they repel the water. However, the game is invaded by dementors searching for Sirius Black and attack Harry, causing him to fall from his broom. Hermione visits him in hospital with Ron and his teammates where she has to break the news that his Nimbus 2000 is broken.[37] Hermione and Ron stay with Harry in the hospital for the rest of the weekend. When he is released, they have a Defence Against the DaromArts lesson and she is pleased to find Lupin has returned. However, when he tells the class that they did not have to complete the homework Snape had set, she is disappointed as she has already finished it. Falling out with Harry and Ron Hermione decides to stay at Hogwarts for the Christmas holidays. She claims it is because she has to use the library but Harry suspects both she and Ron are staying to keep him company. On the final Hogsmeade weekend before the holidays, she plans to buy Toothflossing Stringments for her parents. While she and Ron are in Honeydukes looking at sweets, they are surprised when they hear Harry's voice as he has snuck into the village under the Invisibility Cloak with the help of the Marauder's Map. Hermione disapproves out of concern for his safety and suggests he give the Map to Professor McGonagall for inspection which he refuses. Hermione promises not to report Harry and the three friends continue Christmas shopping together. She and Ron show Harry around the village and then go to The Three Broomsticks for Butterbeer. When they are enjoying their drinks, Professors McGonagall, Flitwick and Hagrid and Cornelius Fudge enter the pub. Hermione and Ron usher Harry to hide under the table and then she moves a Christmas tree in front of their table using Mobiliarbus. They nervously eavesdrop on their conversation and discover that Sirius Black is Harry's godfather who betrayed the Potters to Voldemort, which leaves her at a loss for words. Concerned that Harry wiol try to find Black now that he knows what he did, Hermione begs him not to do anything stupid. Harry bursts into a rant and tells her that every time he gets close to a dementor, he hears his mother screaming when Voldemort killed her. She tries to plead with Harry to leave it, as Black will get caught and punished eventually, but Harry wilo not assure her that he doesn't want to kill him. She points out that he'd be doing what Black wants if he goes out looking for him, and that his parents wouldn't want that, but Harry tells her he doesn't know what his parents would want as they are dead. Despite warning Harry not to leave the castle, he decides to confront Hagrid for keeping this secret. When they arrive at Hagrid's, they find him inconsolable after receiving a letter that Buckbeak is to be put on trial for the attack on Draco. Hermione promises to help him build a solid defence. She also comforts him while he recounts his time in Azkaban and the effect the dementors are having on him. After reassuring him he is a great teacher, she goes to the library to research for Buckbeak's defence. On Christmas Day, she takes Crookshanks into the boys' bedroom despite Ron's protests. She is not excited when she learns that Harry had been sent a new broomstick from someone anonymous and questions if it is safe. Shortly after, Crookshanks pounces on Scabbers and Ron shouts at her to take the cat away, but she is upset that he tried to kick Crookshanks. At Christmas dinner, Hermione tells Professor McGonagall about Harry's new Firebolt broom. She agrees with Hermione that it could have been sent by Sirius Black and confiscates it so it can be checked for curses. Harry and Ron are very upset with Hermione and they have a huge falling out despite her assertion that she acted for the best. She starts avoids the common room and spending her time in the library. After a Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson, Hermione overhears Ron wondering why Lupin always looks ill. She tuts and suggests the answer is obvious, but she snaps and walks away when Ron asks why she doesn't just tell them if she knows. Later, Ron overhears Hermione talking to Professor Vector about their Arithmancy lesson the day before. Ron points out to Harry that she couldn't have been there as that was when they had Care of Magical Creatures, and that she's never missed a Muggle Studies lesson even though half of those are when Divination is on. After the Firebolt is returned to Harry, he and Ron decide to make things up with her and find her in the common room working. While she and Harry are talking about her workload, Ron goes to give Scabbers a rat tonic and discovers his pet missing. On his bedsheet is blood and orange furs belonging to Crookshanks. He confronts Hermione and is enraged she didn't take adequate steps to prevent Scabbers' apparent death, while she claims there is no real proof that Crookshanks is responsible. Harry thinks it looks like the end of their friendship. During a celebration in the common room after Gryffindor wins their Quidditch game against Slytherin, Hermione sits in the corner reading a huge book. Harry tries to encourage her to join in and have some food, but although she watched the game and is happy they won, she says she has to finish the book by Monday. Harry also has to agree with her that Ron doesn't want her to join them when he loudly shouts Scabbers would have enjoyed some of chocolate if hadn't been eaten. Hermione burst into tears and ran to her dormitory. Harry suggests that Ron was too harsh but he reckons she isn't serious about the situation and acts like Scabbers has just gone on vacation. Throughout her estrangement with Harry and Ron, she started going down to Hagrid's more often. Hagrid is concerned that she has taken on too much work and has been crying a lot, but she has been very helpful building a case for Buckbeak. He pleads with them to make amends with her. On the next Hogsmeade weekend, Harry sneaks out with Ron and is caught in possession of the Marauder's Map. Lupin confiscates it and when Hermione appears, they presume she is there to gloat. However, she instead shares the news that Hagrid lost Buckbeak's appeal and the Hippogriff will be executed. Ron promises to help Hermione put together an appeal. She apologises for Scabbers and he says that he was old anyway. With the school having a new curfew, they are unable to go down to Hagrid's outside of lessons. At his next lesson, they console a crying Hagrid. Draco notices and makes fun of Hagrid. When he calls Hagrid "pathetic", Hermione smacks Draco across the face and has to be held back by Draco who she calls "foul" and "evil". A bewildered Draco leaves with his friends, and she tells Harry to make sure they win the Quidditch Cup instead of Slytherin. When they walk to their Charms lesson, Hermione disappears and does not turn up. They find her in the common room, asleep and holding an Arithmancy book. She is shocked to learn she missed Charms and runs to apologise to Professor Flitwick. Hermione is visibly very stressed and disappointed she has missed a lesson on Cheering Charms. She cannot hide her contempt for Divination and scoffs when Trelawney says she has seen their examination in June will contain the Orb. As Hermione points out, Trelawney is the one who sets the exam anyway. They spend the lesson crystal-gazing which frustrates Hermione who feels her time is best served focusing on other subjects. She snaps when Trelawney warns Harry of the Grim again, and the two argue when Trelawney tells her she is "hopelessly mundane" at Divination. Hermione then decides to give up her study of Divination and storms out of the classroom. Trelawney claims she knew that this would happen. At the weekend, Hermione tries to sound confident when she wishes Harry well in the final Quidditch game of the year, but he can tell she is very nervous. When he goes on to catch the Golden Snitch and win the Quidditch Cup for Gryffindor, she and Ron run onto the pitch beaming. In June, the third-years start taking their exams. Harry and Ron are baffled by her timetable as several of her exams at the same time, but she refuses to tell them how. She has a slight blip durin her Defence Against the Dark Arts exam when she faces a boggart which transforms into Professor McGonagall and is told she failed all her exams. Professor Lupin is startled by her screaming. Afterwards they are surprised when Cornelius Fudge arrives for Buckbeak's appeal. Although it is evident they are still planning to execute Buckbeak regardless, Hermione holds Ron back and half-heartedly tries to reassure them Buckbeak might still be exonerated. Advertisement Confrontation with Sirius Black After their final examinations, the trio learn that Hagrid's appeal has been unsuccessful and Buckbeak will be killed at sunset. They decide to break school curfew so they can be with Hagrid when it happens. Hermione retrieves the Cloak of Invisibility from a secret passageway. When they arrive, they console a devastated Hagrid. Hermione offers to pour their tea as Hagrid is shaking. Hagrid wants them to leave as he does not want to watch the execution. As they leave, Ron suddenly discovers Scabbers is alive and catches him. The trio race up the hill where they are horrified when they hear a thud and believe Buckbeak is dead. Hermione is outraged that they could do something like that. They keep walking towards the castle but Scabbers keeps trying to escape. To their dismay, Crookshanks then appears and despite Hermione's warnings, the cat springs at the fleeing rat. Ron pursues Crookshanks and Scabbers with Hermione and Harry trailing not far behind. Ron catches Scabbers but before they can move, they hear something else walking toward them. A giant, spectral dog appears out of the dark and drags Ron away. Harry and Hermione chase after them but are hit by the branches of the Whomping Willow as Ron is dragged under it. To her surprise, Crookshanks swiftly avoids the branches to reach the knot, pushes it and paralyses the Willow. They enter a tunnel under the ground which leads them into a derelict building, which Hermione realises is the Shrieking Shack. When they find Ron, they discover the dog is actually an Animagus and are faced with Sirius Black. Sirius disarms Hermione and Harry but she realises Harry is still going to attack him and tries to hold him back. Harry eventually breaks free and after a scuffle with Sirius, retrieves his wand. Shortly after, Lupin arrives but to Hermione's horror, he does not apprehend Sirius. She reveals that she knows his secret but kept it to herself out of respect. Lupin tried to appeal to her but she tells Harry not to trust Lupin and that he is a werewolf, something she figured out when Professor Snape set an essay on werewolves. She also remembers Lupin's boggart turning into a full moon. Lupin says that Sirius is innocent and begins to tell his story. Half way through, they are interrupted by Professor Snape. Hermione tries to ask Snape to let Lupin tell the rest of the story, but he warns her that she is now already facing suspension for breaking curfew. When she retries, he shouts at her for talkimg about things she did not understand. Desperate to hear the rest of the story, Hermione disarmed Snape at the same time Harry and Ron decided to do the same thing. The force knocks Snape out and Hermione is panicked at the trouble they are going to be in for attacking a teacher. Hermione learns that their friend Peter Pettigrew is the real perpetrator and that he is also a secret Animagus like Sirius and Harry's father James was. She is also surprised to hear that Crookshanks sensed who Scabbers really was and has been helping Sirius to try and catch him the whole time. After transforming Peter back into his human form, Hermione wonders why Peter didn't try and kill Harry when they've been sleeping in the same dormitory. Peter is very appreciative of her question but Sirius quickly explains that Peter doesn't do anything unless he is sure he will benefit from it. Hermione then startles Sirius as she addresses him very politely, and she asks him how he escaped Azkaban if he didn't use Dark magic. Sirius believes the only way he didn't lose his mind quite like other prisoners is because he knew he was innocent and that was a happy thought for the dementors. He had snuck out of the prison in Animagus form to hunt down Peter when he realised he was at Hogwarts with Harry. They believe Sirius and Lupin and Peter clutches Hermione's robes to beg her for help. She tugs her robe away and backs up horrified. They decide to give Peter over to the authorities instead. Hermione walks back toward the castle with the others. Goblet of Fire During the summer holidays, Hermione received a letter via Hedwig from him with a plea for help. She learned that he was starving after being put on Dudley Dursley's diet and sent Hedwig back with a box stuffed with sugar-free sweets. On his birthday, she sent Harry a birthday card and a cake. Hermione attended the final of the 422nd Quidditch World Cup after being invited by the Weasleys, arriving the Burrow before Harry. After travelling via Portkey to a campsite near the World Cup venue, she walked around with Harry and Ron. When vendors opened shops on trays and stalls, Hermione purchased programs. Her ticket was for the Top Box where she met her first house-elf, Winky. Lucius Malfoy stared at her when he also arrived and she stared back at him determinately, although she did go red in the face. Later life In 2008, Hermione translated her copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard from ancient runes for a new edition containing the notes of Albus Dumbledore. Appearance Hermione has light skin, brown eyes, large front teeth and lots of bushy brown hair. Her front teeth were enlarged by a Densaugeo hex, but she had them put back shorter than they originally were. Hermione looked tanned after a holiday. Her hair is long but she is known to tie it back. For special occasions, she uses Sleekeazy's Hair Potion to tidy her hair but she found it far too much work for everyday use. "Don't let the Muggles get you down." — Ron Weasley's support for Harry. Ronald Bilius "Ron" Weasley is a character in the Harry Potter book series. He is Harry Potter's best friend who was brought up in the wizarding world at The Burrow. He and Hermione Granger help Harry save the Philosopher's Stone and find the Chamber of Secrets. He is a co-founder of Dumbledore's Army who fights at the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. He helps to defeat Voldemort and the Death Eaters by hunting down Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes, and fights at the Battle of Hogwarts which he survives. Ron is the sixth of seven children born to Arthur and Molly Weasley. He has five elder brothers, Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred and George, and one younger sister, Ginny. He is raised at The Burrow until he starts Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They are not a wealthy family and Ron receives everything second-hand from his elder brothers During his childhood, Ron took Charlie's broom and nearly crashed it, hitting a hang-glider. When he is eleven, Ron receives the family's pet rat Scabbers from Percy after he gets an owl instead. Philosopher's Stone Ron is introduced to Harry Potter at King's Cross when he asks the Weasley family for help finding Platform 9 and 3/4. Ron joins Harry in a compartment on the train, and quickly establish a friendship. He tells Harry that his family has no money so Harry buys everything from the lunch trolley. Ron teaches Harry about the wizarding world. At one point, Neville Longbottom and Hermione Granger asks if they have seen his pet toad. Hermione notices that Ron is practicing spells and asks if he will show her one. Ron tries a spell that Fred and George told him about, only to realise they gave him a fake spell and he is left embarrassed by his failure. Hermione's response is rather condescending which annoys Harry and Ron. They are interrupted later by Draco who tells Harry that he should befriend the right sort of people, but Harry declines Draco's offer of frienship in favour of Ron. Draco continues to be rude to Ron and eventually they start fighting. When Scabbers bites Gregory Goyle, they run away. Fred and George also lied to Ron about the Sorting ceremony and he worries he will have to fight a troll. The Sorting Hat places him in Gryffindor like Harry. Ron is happy when he finds out Harry is going to be the youngest Seeker in a century for the Gryffindor team. A jealous Draco challenges Harry to a duel at midnight and Ron signs up to be Harry's second. Hermione tries to stop it but she and Neville end up joining them. They realise Filch is waiting there to catch them and they run away accidentally onto the out-of-bounds third-floor corridor where they discover Fluffy. After they escape Fluffy, Hermione points out that Fluffy is guarding a trapdoor which Ron and Harry propose is an object Hagrid collected in the summer. During a Charms lesson, Hermione upsets Ron when she tries to tell him how to pronounce the Levitation Charm. She overhears him criticising her and he causes her run away in tears. She does not attend the Hallowe'en feast and hides in a bathroom. Ron and Harry go to rescue her when a troll is let loose in the castle, and Ron saves her by correctly pronouncing the Levitation Charm. Hermione lies to Professor McGonagall to get Harry and Ron out of trouble and they became friends. Ron watches the first Quidditch game between Gryffindor and Slytherin. He and Hermione notice Harry's broom is being jinxed when it starts uncontrollably bucking, and they believe Professor Snape is responsible. Hermione intervenes and stops the real culprit, Professor Quirrell, in the process. When they find out through Hagrid that Fluffy is guarding a secret known only to Dumbledore and Nicolas Flamel, they start researching to find out who Flamel is and what the secret could be. Ron spends the Christmas holidays at Hogwarts. He teaches Harry how to play his favourite game, Wizard Chess, One evening, Harry wakes Ron up and takes him to the Mirror of Erised under the Cloak of Invisibility. Ron sees himself as a Quidditch Captain, winning the Quidditch Cup and shaking Dumbledore's hand. He figured out that the mirror only shows them what they want and did not represent a reality. Ron tells Harry that he needs to let go. In the new year, Neville is cursed by Draco with the Leg-Locker Curse. Ron tells him that he needs to stand up for himself when people make fun of him. Harry then suddenly remembers reading about Nicolas Flamel on the back of Dumbledore's Chocolate Frog Card. They find out that Nicolas is the creator of the Philosopher's Stone. At the next Quidditch game, Ron and Neville are taunted by Draco and Ron snaps and starts a fight. He and Draco punch each other until Harry catches the Golden Snitch. When they find out that Hagrid has received a dragon egg, they point out that he can't possibly keep a dragon in his tiny wooden hut. Hagrid pays no attention because he has always wanted a dragon. They run down to the hut when the egg is hatching. The dragon is a danger in the hut and they persuade Hagrid to let Ron send a letter to Charlie, a dragon-keeper, and ask him to take her. Norbert bites Ron and he has to stay in the Hospital Wing. Draco stops by to find out why and takes a book that Ron has hidden Charlie's response in. He tells on them and Harry and Hermione to get caught out of bed by Professor McGonagall. While he is serving detention, Harry is confronted by a cloaked figure in the Forbidden Forest that wants to hurt him, and that it is implied that it is Voldemort. Ron tells him that Hermione is right in saying nobody can hurt him when Dumbledore is around. Harry then has a epiphany and wonders why a stranger would just give Hagrid a dragon egg. Hagrid confesses that he told the stranger how to get past Fluffy. They suspect that Snape is trying to steal the Philosopher's Stone, and resolve that they have to try and prevent it. Harry, Ron and Hermione sneaks past Fluffy when he is sleeping and go through the trapdoor. They fall into a Devil's Snare where Hermione panics when she can't think of a way out. Ron encourages her and she realises she can use light to soothe it.[21] Ron leads the group to a giant chessboard where they have to play Wizard Chess. He takes the position of the Knight and leads the group to victory but has to sacrifice himself so Harry is able to checkmate the enemy's King. Ron is knocked out and has to stay behind while the other two move on. Ron is reunited with Harry three days later when he visits him in the Hospital Wing. Harry had learned that Professor Quirrell was working for Voldemort to steal the Philosopher's Stone. At the end of the year, Ron is awarded fifty points for playing the best game of chess that Hogwarts has ever seen which helps to ensure Gryffindor wins the House Cup for the first time in seven years. Chamber of Secrets In the summer holidays, Ron sends Harry letters inviting him to go to The Burrow. However, he doesn't receive any replies and Ron believes that it is Errol's fault when it is Dobby who has been intercepting Harry's mail. When Ron finds out that Harry has been sent an official government warning for using under-age magic, he flies to Privet Drive with Fred and George in their father's flying car where Ron wakes Harry up by knocking on his bedroom window, which has bars on it. They tell him they are taking him back to The Burrow with them and help him gather his luggage. Vernon wakes up to the noise and tries to grab Harry's ankles when he is getting in the car but Fred, George and Ron pull him in and they escape. Ron tells him about the letters he has been sending him and that they were worried about him. Harry informs them about Dobby who has warned him he will be in great danger at Hogwarts that year. They debate who the Dark wizard that Dobby says is behind it could be and consider it is Lucius Malfoy. When they arrive at The Burrow, they discover an angry Mrs Weasley waiting who has realised that they took the car. Fred, George and Ron are ordered to de-gnome the garden. Harry spends the summer at The Burrow and stays in Ron's room. Along with Fred and George, he takes turns riding a Nimbus 2000 during their mini Quidditch tournaments. During a visit to Diagon Alley to get new school supplies, Ron spends an hour with just Harry and Hermione and get ice-creams. At Flourish and Blotts during Gilderoy Lockhart's book signing, Ron witnesses Harry, Ginny and Draco arguing. When he intervenes, Draco insults Ron and Hermione and they try to fight Draco each other. Harry and Hermione hold him back until Arthur and Draco's father, Lucius, get into a fight instead. In September, Ron goes back to Hogwarts for his second year. They are nearly late getting to King's Cross. Harry and Ron are the last ones to try and walk through the wall to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters but Dobby has blocked it and they hit it, missing the train. Desperate to find another way to Hogwarts, they decide to fly the Ford Anglia the entire way. However, upon flying, Ron goes to push the Invisibility Booster button which does not work instantly. Until the Booster shrouds the flyinh car, they are witnessed by several Muggles and break both the International Statute of Secrecy and the law against underage sorcery. The long flight to Hogwarts is incredibly boring and hot. When they finally get there, the car suffers a power cut and they fall from the sky into the Whomping Willow. During an ensuing beating by the tree, his wand is nearly snapped in half and irreparably damaged. When the car springs back to life, they get out of the tree but the Ford Anglia kicks them and their possessions out onto the lawn and drives away into the Forbidden Forest. Professor Snape is the first to catch them and he wants to punish them with expulsion after showing them the news reports of their shenanigans. Professors McGonagall and Dumbledore decide they should sit detentions instead, and they are not able to join the others at the Start-of-Term feast that evening. Upon returning to their common room, they are greeted with applaud from their classmates but Hermione is unhappy with their actions. Ron admits that even though he is in the wrong, he loves the admiration. Ron receives a Howler from Mrs Weasley in which he is berated for taking the car and getting Arthur into trouble at work. Ron is teased by the classmates that overhear it but Hermione is happy because he has now been punished. He tried to use Spellotape to put his broken wand back together but it is beyond repair and keeps sparking. During his first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson with Professor Lockhart, cornish pixies are let loose and they are abandoned to put the creatures back in their cages on their own. Ron is sceptical about Lockhart and believes he is incompetent and a fraud. Ron and Hermione watch Harry training on the Quidditch pitch. They go over when the Slytherin team take over the pitch with special permission to train their new Seeker, Draco, whose father has gifted the team with Nimbus 2001s. Hermione tells Draco that at least everyone else got into the team for their talent and with bribes. Draco calls her a "mudblood" but Hermione does not know the word and doesn't react. Ron does however and tries to curse Draco using the Slug-vomiting Charm but his broken wand malfunctions and his is struck by his own spell when it bounces back. Harry and Hermione take a vomiting Ron to Hagrid's hut while the whole Slytherin team is laughing. Hagrid advises Ron to wait it out and that he will eventually stop throwing up. Ron and Hagrid tell Harry and Hermione what the word "mudblood" means. Hagrid also shows them the pumpkins he is growing in his vegetable patch and they figure out he is using an Engorgement Charm. After returning to the castle, Ron finds out he has detention helping Filch clean the trophy room. He has to spend the whole evening there and coughs up slugs when he is cleaning the Special Award for Services to the School. He is also made to buff the Quidditch Cup fourteen times until Filch is happy. He walks back to the common room nursing a tired arm and finds Harry is still awake. Harry tells him how during his own detention with Lockhart, he heard a very strange, ice-cold voice whispering about killing but Lockhart did not hear it. Ron agrees that it is strange but they can't figure out who or what might be responsible. Ron attends Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday Party but it is dreary and dull and he leaves the party early with Harry and Hermione. Harry then hears the voice again in the corridor but he and Hermione cannot hear it. Harry tracks the voice to the body of Mrs Norris who has been Petrified and hung by her tail near a warning that "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the Heir beware". Ron wants to just leave because he is worried they will not look good if are caught at the scene, but it is too late because a crowd of students suddenly appear in the corridor after leaving the Hallowe'en feast. Harry, Ron and Hermione are suspected of being involved but Dumbledore does not agree and says they could not have possibly been involved. Harry asks Ron if he should have told people about the voice he heard, but he disagrees and says that hearing voices, even in the wizarding world, is not a good sign. The next day, Ron notices that Ginny is very fraught about Mrs Norris and tries unsuccessfully to cheer her up by joking that she was not very nice cat and it is a good thing. Ron overhears that other Hogwarts students believe Harry is the Heir of Slytherin. He also learns what the Chamber of Secrets is and notices spiders appear to be fleeing the school in a hurry. Ron admits to Harry and Hermione for the first time that he has a fear of spiders. To prove Harry is innocent, they work together to try and find the real Heir of Slytherin. Ron believes it is Draco and Hermione hatches a plan to prove it by using Polyjuice Potion to pose as Draco's friends and ask him. They persuade Professor Lockhart to give them permission to get a book outof the Restricted Section whih has the potion's recipe and search for the ingredients. Ron and Hermione take Harry to the Hospital Wing after he broke his elbow during a Quidditch game and his arm is subsequently rendered boneless by a hapless Lockhart. Ron asks Hermione how she can continue to defend Lockhart when it is clear he is incompetent but she counters that everyone gets things wrong sometimes. In December, they join a Duelling Club created by Professor Lockhart. Ron is put in pairs with Seamus Finnigan to duel together but his broken wand leaves Seamus ash-faced. Toward the end of their first Duelling Club meeting, Ron witnesses Harry unknowingly speak Parseltongue after Draco summoned a snake during their own duel. Harry tries to order the snake not to hurt Justin Finch-Fletchley. They take a confused Harry to the side and warn him about the language, and that to everyone else, Harry appeared to have been encouraging the snake to attack. Ron tells Harry that speaking Parseltongue is a bad thing because it is related to Dark magic, one that Salazar Slytherin and his descendants can speak, and that the whole school will believe it is proof that Harry really is the Heir of Salazar Slytherin. After hearing Draco signing up to stay behind at Hogwarts for the Christmas holidays, Ron, Harry and Hermione also decide to stay. They successfully brew a complete Polyjuice Potion by Christmas Day and obtain the hair of Draco's friends. Ron take the appearance of Crabbe and Harry takes Goyle's but Hermione has accidentally got a piece of Millicent Bulstrode's cat's hair and has transformed into a half-cat, half-human. The boys leave her to talk to Draco but he reveals that he is not the Heir of Slytherin. The conversation isn't entirely fruitless because Draco also reveals the Chamber of Secrets was first opened fifty years ago, that a student was killed and the person responsible was expelled. Harry later discovers through Tom Riddle's Diary that Hagrid was the student held responsible. Ron and his friends say nothing to Hagrid about what they have learned but resolve to do so if anyone else is Petrified but then Hermione is Petrified when researching in the Hogwarts Library. Harry and Ron finally confront Hagrid who claims he is innocent but they have to hide under the Invisibility Cloak when Dumbledore, Cornelius Fudge and Lucius arrive at the hut. Fudge takes Hagrid to Azkaban and Lucius informs Dumbledore that the Board of Governors have sacked him for incompetency. Hagrid shouts out three final parting words to Harry and Ron; that they should "follow the spiders" to find out the truth. Ron and Harry find spiders and follow them into the Forbidden Forest with Fang. The spiders lead them to Aragog, an Acromantula that belonged to Hagrid fifty years ago. Aragog tells them that he is not the monster in the Chamber, that Hagrid is innocent, and that the real monster is a thing that spiders fear and do not speak of. Harry figures out that the student who was killed the first time is Moaning Myrtle. However, Aragog will not let them go and decides to his hungry children eat them. Ron and Harry are forced to fight their way out of the hollow until they are saved by a feral Ford Anglia. While they are visiting Hermione in the Hospital Wing, and they find a piece of paper in her hand. Her research has led her to the conclusion that the monster is a Basilisk. Ron and Harry try to tell the Professors in the staff-room to tell but overhear them talking about a final warning they have received from whoever had opened the Chamber of Secrets. Ginny has been taken into the Chamber by the creature and the school is going to be closed down. Professor Lockhart is given the task of saving her because he has been boasting that he knows where the Chamber is. With the knowledge they have received from Hermione, they decide to join Lockhart. When they get to Lockhart's office, they catch him trying to run away. He admits to being a fraud and that he has no idea what he is doing. Ron and Harry force Lockhart to help them and they speak to Moaning Myrtle who tells them where the entrance to the Chamber is. Harry speaks Parseltongue and opens it which goes to the tunnels under the school. Lockhart manages to get Ron's broken wand and attempts to inflict Memory Charms on them but the spell bounces back and hits Lockhart. The iact causes rocks to fall and separates Harry from Ron. Harry carried on by himself while Ron stays with a confused Lockhart. Harry slays the Basilisk with the help of Fawkes and saves Ginny. They pick up Ron and Lockhart on their way back to the castle with Fawkes where they discover Dumbledore has been reinstated as Head of the school. Ron is awarded Ron one-hundred and fifty points for saving the school. Ron and Harry are reunited with Hermione and Hagrid at a celebratory feast. Prisoner of Azkaban During the summer holidays, Ron tries phoning Harry after receiving the phone number for 4 Privet Drive. Being a wizard, he didn't own a phone nor had he ever used one. Arthur helps to obtain one but when Ron phones up, Vernon Dursley answers. Ron shouts down the phone and tells Vernon he is a friend of Harry's. Vernon shouts at Ron to stay away, that he doesn't even know a Harry Potter and he should never phone back. Ron knows he has gotten Harry into trouble and doesn't retry. Arthur wins the Grand Prize Galleon Draw and takes the family to Egypt to visit Bill. They appear on the front page of the Daily Prophet which Ron sends a copy of to Harry for his birthday with a card and a Sneakoscope. In the card, he apologises for phoning and now understands that he shouldn't have shouted. He also sends a letter to Hermione to tell her what happened. He invites Harry to go shopping for school supplies when he gets back. In the meantime, Harry runs away from Privet Drive and starts staying at the Leaky Cauldron. On the final day of the holidays, the Weasleys also stay there. They are also accompanied by Hermione. Ron and Hermione hangs out with Harry in Diagon Alley for the day. They have ice-cream together and then shop in the Magical Menagerie. While she tries to pick an owl, Ron has Scabbers checked out because he is looking very sick and he is advised to buy Rat Tonic. A cat, Crookshanks, then launches at Scabbers who escapes, but Ron is frustated when Hermione decides to adopt Crookshanks. On the first of September, Harry ieeps trying to tell Ron something he has learned the night before but they are too busy getting ready to return to Hogwarts. When he is boarding the train, he receives sandwiches from Molly. They have to share a compartment with Remus Lupin who is sleeping. Harry finally tells Ron and Hermione that an escaped Azkaban prisoner, Sirius Black, apparently wants to kill him. While they talk, the Sneakoscope starts screeching to signify someone untrustworthy is nearby but they think it is faulty. When they are nearly at Hogwarts, the train suddenly stops. The compartment is entered by a dementor searching for Black. Under its influence, Ron feels like he will never be cheerful again. It attacks Harry until Lupin intervenes. Ron helps get him back up and when he asks Ron who he heard screaming, he is confused and tells him nobody was screaming. After arriving at Hogwarts, Draco laugh at Harry for fainting but Ron stands up for him. At the Start-of-Term Feast, Ron points out that Professor Snape doesn't look happy after it is announced that Lupin will be the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. He also learns that Hagrid will be teaching Care of Magical Creatures to which Ron remarks it makes sense because else would have assigned them a biting book. The next day, Sir Cadogan helps Ron, Harry and Hermione after they get lost on the way to their first Divination lesson. Sir Cadogan's over-the-top bravado attitude irritates Ron who says he will only call for his help if he needs someone "mental". Very early in the lesson, Sybill Trelawney warns Parvati Patil that she should "beware a red-haired man" causing her to look at Ron in alarm. Ron and Harry read each other's tea leaves, leading to the revelation that Harry's shows the Grim, an omen that he will die very soon. Although others assure Harry that Trelawney predicts purposely a death in her first lessons for show, Ron is not so sure. Harry confirms he has seen a black dog recently. Hermione does not believe this is proof of anything but Ron argues that it isn't good and tells them his great-uncle Bilius died after he saw a Grim. The two argue over the validity of this superstition until Ron says she is just upset she isn't good at something for a change. Hermione leaves after remarking Arithmancy is a better subject but Ron is confused because she can't have attended that lesson yet. During his first Care of Magical Creatures lesson, Ron witnesses Buckbeak's attack on Draco. He hopes Hagrid will not be fired because of it. They visit Hagrid after tea where Ron pledges his support to Hagrid. During a Potions lesson, Draco sets his cauldron up next to Ron and feigns his injuries so that Snape demands Ron help him. Ron cuts roughly Draco's ingredients up and is forced to switch them for his own. Draco keeps on teasing Harry and Ron, confessing that he is faking his injuries to get Hagrid fired. Ron threatens to give him a real injury if he carries on.[9] They hear that Sirius Black has been spotted nearby Hogwarts Castle. Draco suggests that Harry should be very eager to get revenge on Black but Harry and Ron are very confused as to why. After the lesson, Ron is complaining about Snape when he turns around to discover Hermione has disappeared, only to reappear back at the bottom of the stairs. He notices her bag is crammed with books she doesn't even have lessons for that day, but she glosses over it. Ron questions whether Hermione is hiding something. Ron faces a boggart in Lupin's first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. Unsurprisingly, his takes the form of a giant spider whose legs he removes with the Riddikulus spell. Ron says it is the best lesson they've ever had and questions whether Hermione's boggart would turn into a piece of homework that isn't ten out of ten. While discussing the first Hogsmeade weekend, Crookshanks stares at Ron intensely until he leaps onto his bag where Scabbers is sleeping. Ron fights Crookshanks for the bag but Scabbers flies out the top and scurries away. Ron shouts for everyone to catch the cat but he eventually recaptures Scabbers. Ron and Hermione have an argument over Crookshanks who he reckons is strange and has got it in for Scabbers. He is concerned for his rat who is very thin and frail. The next day, Ron tries to encourage Harry to try and ask if he can go to Hogsmeade without a permission slip to no success. Ron goes to the village with Hermione where they visit every possible place and bring back sweets for Harry. However, when they return to their common room, they cannot enter because the Fat Lady's painting has been slashed and she has disappeared. Ron has to sleep in the Great Hall for the evening while the castle is searched for the attacker, Sirius Black. That night, Ron overhears Dumbledore and Snape discussing Black. Snape suggests that Black has had help getting into the castle, and asks Dumbledore to reconsider his concerns that a recent appointment to the staff is responsible. Ron asks his friends what that could be about. Later, his Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson is covered by Snape while Lupin is ill. Ron snaps during the lesson when Snape is rude to Hermione for being an "insufferable know-it-all". After shouting at Snape that he shouldn't ask the question if he doesn't want the answer told, he receives detention. At the end of the lesson, he learns that he has to scrub the bedpans in the Hospital Wing without magic. Ron watches the first Quidditch game of the season. He rushes to the Hospital Wing to be there when Harry wakes up after he was attacked by dementors and fell from his broom. He and Hermione have to tell Harry his Nimbus 2000 is broken after it fell into the Whomping Willow. Ron and Hermione get to return to Hogsmeade before the Christmas holidays but like the first time, they have to leave Harry behind. Ron is delighted when Harry sneaks into Honeydukes and is outraged Fred and George didn't tell him about the Marauder's Map. Hermione suggests they have to give the Map to the Professors in case it is cursed. She also says that Harry should return to the castle in case Sirius Black gets into the village but Harry and Ron refuse. Ron points out the impossibility of it and tells her that Harry deserves a break. While having a drink in the Three Broomsticks Inn, the three overhear Professors talking with Cornelius Fudge and learn Black is the godfather of Harry and betrayed the Potters to Voldemort. Ron and Hermione are concerned for Harry over the next few days. The next morning, he asks Harry if he is okay and points out he doesn't look well. They try to persuade him not to go looking for Black, and Ron says Black isn't worth dying for. Harry responds with an outburst about the suffering Black has caused, and Ron asks Harry if he is going to kill Black but does not get a response. Ron calls Harry out when he suggests that he should take Draco's advice and get revenge, and says that Draco would like it if he died. Ron unsuccessfully tries to encourage Harry to play a game and instead they go to visit Hagrid. They arrive at Hagrid's to find him crying. He has received a Ministry letter about Buckbeak. After reading the first part, Ron believes it is good news because Hagrid will not be held responsible. However, he tries to console Hagrid when he learns Buckbeak is going to be put on trial. They resolve to help Hagrid put up a defence in court. On Christmas morning, Ron wakes Harry up so they can open their presents. He is very excited when Harry opens up a Firebolt. Ron is not particularly bothered about who the anonymous sender is and is eager to try riding it, but Hermione is very worried that it was Black. Crookshanks then tries to lunge at Scabbers so Ron grabs the rat by his tail and then tries to kick Crookshanks away. In the process, he kicks a trunk and knocks out the Sneakoscope. While it is shrilling, he screams at Hermione to take Crookshanks away. After attending a Christmas feast, Ron and Harry are very upset when Hermione reveals she has told the Professors about the Firebolt and it is confiscated to be checked over. Ron and Harry stop speaking to Hermione for a while. A few weeks later, he hears Hermione tuttering when he wonders why Lupin looks ill. She suggests that it is obvious but will not tell him why to his frustration. Later that evening, he watches her study for all of her lessons and realises the impossibility of her being able to have time to attend every one of them. Harry soon receives the Firebolt back and the boys decide to make friends with Hermione. This is short-lived however when Ron discovers Scabbers has apparently been eaten by Crookshanks. Ron and Hermione fall out and it appears to be the end of their friendship. Ron considers Hermione responsible for what Crookshanks did because she didn't keep an eye on him, but Hermione does not believe there is enough evidence that Crookshanks is guilty. Ron is devastated by his rat's death so Harry tries to cheer him up by letting him ride the Firebolt. When they return to the castle, they are startled by Crookshanks and Ron shouts at him to get away. The day of Gryffindor's match against Ravenclaw, which will decide the winner of the Quidditch Cup, Ron is gleeful when he notices Draco looking thunderstruck when he realises Harry has a Firebolt. When the match ended in victory for Gryffindor after Harry catches the Golden Snitch, Ron is the first to run on the pitch and cheer with Harry. Ron also falls into hysterics at the sight of a disheveled Draco, who tried to scare Harry by dressing up as a Dementor and got attacked with the Patronus Charm. At a party to celebrate in the Gryffindor Tower, Ron overhears Harry trying to get Hermione to join them. Ron then loudly shouts out that if Scabbers were alive, he could have enjoyed some Fudge Flies. Hermione leaves in tears but Ron tells Harry that he would forgive her if she apologised but that she keeps acting like Scabbers has just gone on holiday. That night while he is sleeping, Ron is woken up to discover Sirius Black slashing the curtains around his bed with a knife. At first, everyone believes Ron has just had a nightmare until Sir Cadogan reveals he did let someone in. In the days that follow, everyone wants to hear the story of how Sirius attacked Ron, who is enjoying the attention. Ron and Harry are also confused as to why Sirius ran away when Ron woke up instead of silencing him. Although they consider that Sirius got in through the secret passageway to Honeydukes, Harry is glad when Ron points out they would have hear if the sweetshop had been broken into. On a visit to Hagrid's hut, Ron is disappointed to learn Hagrid has already heard his story. Instead, he and Harry are pleaded with to make up with Hermione and friendship is more valuable than broomsticks and rats. However when Hermione overhears Harry with Ron about sneaking into Hogsmeade at the weekend so they can visit Zonko's Joke Shop, they argue because she considers it dangerous and threatens to tell the teachers. Ron calls her out for trying to get Harry expelled and she walks away. The day of the Hogsmeade trip, Harry meets Ron in the village under his Cloak of Invisibility. They visit several shops and toward the end of the day, Ron takes Harry to the Shrieking Shack. Draco, Crabbe and Goyle notice Ron there, who appears to be standing on his own as Harry is still invisible, and decide to harass him. After several insults, Harry began throwing snowballs at them. They are confused and scared that they are being attacked by a ghost. However, during the theatrics, Harry's cloak slips and he is noticed by Draco. Ron urges Harry to get back to Hogwarts before he tells a teacher. Ron also rushes back to the castle where Harry is being quizzed by Professors Snape and Lupin about the Marauder's Map. Ron lies and says that he bought it in Zonko's for Harry. Lupin later reveals he knows the truth, and that Harry shouldn't be leaving the castle when Sirius Black is still on the loose. Ron feels guilty and isn't interested in talking to Hermione until she reveals Hagrid lost Buckbeak's case and the Hippogriff is going to be put down. Ron agrees to help her with an appeal and they finally forgive each other. They visit Hagrid, who is inconsolable, where Ron pledges to put together the appeal. However, when Hagrid leaves, they hear Draco and his friends laughing and calling him "pathetic". Ron and Harry started to move towards them but are beaten to it by Hermione, who slaps Draco across the face. Ron tries has to grab her hand but she pulls out her wand on a fleeing Draco. Ron is very impressed and stunned. Shortly after, they walk to their Charms lesson but the boys are befuddled when they realize Hermione has suddenly disappeared and does not turn up all lesson. When she fails to show up to lunch, they start to worry about her. When they return to the common room, they discover Hermione asleep. She is surprised to learn she missed Charms and a confused Harry and Ron point out she was there when they arrived. Ron is also shocked when Hermione argues with Professor Trelawney and storms out of the lesson. During the Easter holidays, Ron takes over the researching for Buckbeak's appeal because Hermione is very busy and stressed with her lessons. One night, he is woken up by Harry who wants Ron to look out the window to confirm that Crookshanks is walking with the Grim but Ron says it is dark and goes back to sleep. Upon reading Hermione's conflicting exam schedule, Ron questions how she will be able to attend two exams at once but she shrugs away the question. Ron does very well in his Defence Against the Dark Arts exams until he reaches a hinkypunk and is led into a quagmire. Afterwards, they return to the castle only to run into Cornelius Fudge who is there to witness Buckbeak's execution. Ron instantly reacts and abruptly asks Fudge if they've already had the appeal and when he hears it is this afternoon, shouts that he might not have to watch an execution then. He is pulled away when he tries to question why the executioner has the axe ready. Ron believes they have already decided the result of the appeal. Ron is eager to get his Divination exam over so he can prepare to hear the result of Buckbeak's appeal. He makes up fake visions in a crystal ball, considering Professor Trelawney a fraud, but she does not appear convinced. When he returns to the common room, he receives a note from Hagrid that he has lost the appeal and not to go down and watch Buckbeak's execution at sunset. Goblet of Fire During the summer holidays, Ron learns that Harry is starving after being put on Dudley's diet. He sends Harry a birthday card and a cake. He has also adopted a very large frog which he keeps on the windowsill of his bedroom in a fish bowl. Arthur secures tickets to the 422nd Quidditch World Cup final for the family, Harry and Hermione. Molly writes a letter to Vernon and Petunia Dursley to ask for their permission to take Harry. Ron sends his own letter to Harry to say even if the Dursleys refuse, they are going to pick him up anyway. Ron travels with Arthur, Fred and George through the Floo Network to Privet Drive to collect Harry. Upon returning to the Burrow, he shows Harry to his room where he tells him the latest in the wizarding world. The next morning, they leave for their campsite near the venue for the World Cup. After their arrival, they walk around the campsite while Ron excitedly talks about Viktor Krum, his favourite Quidditch player. Before the final, Ron buys a mini figurine of Viktor and a shamrock decorated hat. At the age of eleven, Ron is very tall and lanky with red hair and blue eyes. He has a pale, freckled complexion, a long nose and big hands and feet.
