Destination: Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The moment Frank slid into the driver’s seat of the massive, slightly suspicious-looking white van and Hazel climbed in beside him with a fold-out map and a GPS that definitely needed an update, you knew this trip was going to be something. You sat on one of the side-facing benches in the back, crammed in alongside half of the demigod population of Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter, all of whom were apparently allergic to silence, seatbelts, or both.

Hazel: "Okay, so if we just take this highway south, and then—wait, is that a ghost town or a gas station?"

Frank: "We're not stopping at either."

Leo: "I could build us a gas station. With snacks. And a mechanical squirrel that dispenses soda."

Annabeth: "No one wants your robot rodents, Leo."

Leo: "Speak for yourself."

Somewhere behind you, Will was trying to wrap a sunhat around Nico’s head while Nico stared dead-eyed out the tinted window like he was regretting every life choice that had led to this moment.

Will: "You’ll get sun poisoning through the glass. It’s science."

Nico: "It’s tinted."

Will: "UV rays are ruthless, babe."

Grover had been singing a mashup of indie folk and panic flute solos for the past thirty miles. Rachel was painting her third canvas of the sky through the window, despite the fact the van hit a bump every five seconds and splattered her with blue every time.

Rachel: "It's not messy. It's textured."

Thalia was curled up in the back corner with her boots on the seat, sunglasses on, chewing gum aggressively and judging everyone.

Thalia: "If Leo starts singing Disney songs again, I’m jumping out the window."

Leo: "Bet. A Whole New Woooooorld—"

Thalia: "Frank, hit the brakes."

Jason, bless him, was trying to mediate.

Jason: "Can we just… not threaten each other for ten minutes?"

Piper: "Only if Leo stops channeling Broadway."

Leo: "You’re all just mad you don’t have the range."

Reyna had somehow managed to wedge herself next to the luggage and was calmly reading a paperback novel while the rest of the van imploded around her. Every so often she’d glance up, blink slowly, and go back to her book like this was just another Tuesday.

Reyna: "Frank, you missed the turn."

Frank: "WHAT?!"

Hazel: "We’re fine, it’s just a four-hour detour..."

The van veered wildly. Grover bleated. Rachel’s canvas smacked Will in the face. Nico closed his eyes like he was begging the Mist to take him.

And still, somehow, no one wanted to go back to New York. Not yet. Maybe it was the adventure. Maybe it was the desert air. Or maybe it was just that, for once, everyone was together, and chaos wasn’t the worst thing in the world.
