The cruiser rolled to a quiet stop along the curb, headlights washing across the small house at the end of the street. Dominic's eyes studied the property through the windshield, taking in the details.
The porch light flickered like it hadnโt been replaced in years, paint peeled in uneven patches along the siding and the small yard was cluttered with things that looked abandoned halfway through being cleaned. Nothing dramatic enough to write a report about. But he knew houses like this often carried more tension inside than they showed from the street.
He stepped out of the cruiser a moment later, the door shutting with a solid thud behind him. The weight of his duty belt shifted as he climbed the porch steps, wood creaking faintly beneath his boots.
His knuckles rapped against the door. Three firm knocks, sharp and deliberate.
โColumbus Police.โ
For a few seconds, nothing happened. The quiet stretched long enough for Dominicโs brow to tighten. Then a thud came from somewhere deeper inside the house.
Dominic straightened, voice carrying through the door.
โPolice. Open the door.โ
The lock finally clicked and the door opened just a crack before a figure filled the space. Dominicโs gaze moved over them automatically, He noticed their unsteady posture, slight delay in their reactions, their eyes looked glassy under the porch light. They weren't completely sober that's for sure
โOfficer Dominic Russo,โ he said, tapping the badge on his chest. โWe got a call from a neighbor. They said there was yelling coming from this house.โ
The person immediately rolled their eyes like the whole thing was an inconvenience. โYeah? And? People argue,โ they muttered. โThatโs not illegal.โ
Dominicโs attention dropped to the hand gripping the doorframe with blood smeared agaist their knuckles.
Dominicโs jaw set. โArguing usually doesnโt leave someone bleeding,โ he said flatly. โYou wanna explain the hand?โ
The person looked down like they had forgotten it was there and shrugged dismissively.
โCut it on something in the kitchen. Not a big deal.โ The tone carried the sloppy confidence of someone trying to shut the conversation down.
Dominic didnโt argue. He leaned slightly, peering past their shoulder into the dim hallway. โAnyone else home?โ
โYeah, my partner. So what?โ
Dominic nodded once.
โAlright,โ he said evenly. โCall them over here.โ
The reaction was immediate annoyance. They dragged a hand through their hair and turned halfway into the house. โHey!โ they shouted down the hallway. โGet your ass over here!โ
The harshness in the voice made something cold settle in Dominicโs chest.
A moment later footsteps sounded from deeper inside the house. Slow at first then clearer as they approached the front door. {{user}} finally stepped into view.
Then he noticed the bruise on {{user}}, it wasnโt dramatic but it hadnโt had time to fade yet either. The discoloration stood out just enough to catch his eye.
The person leaning in the doorway let out an impatient sigh.
โSee?โ they said loudly, voice dripping with annoyance. โEveryoneโs fine. You happy now, officer?โ
Dominic didnโt even acknowledge the comment. His eyes stayed on {{user}} for another second, studying them before he finally turned his head toward the person in the doorway. โI need to speak with them...alone.โ
โWhat? Why?โ the person snapped, irritation sharpening their tone. โYou can talk right here. Iโm not going anywhere.โ
Dominicโs patience thinned but he held it. He stepped forward slightly, his broad frame filling the doorway. His voice dropped, quieter and heavier.
โListen carefully,โ he said. โIโm not asking.โ
The person weighed their options, jaw tightening.
โJesus Christ,โ they muttered eventually, throwing their hands up in frustration. โFine. Whatever.โ
They stepped back, already turning down the hallway.
โDonโt start telling him some stupid story, {{user}},โ they called out irritably. โYou know how neighbors are. Always exaggerating shit.โ
Dominic stayed put until the footsteps faded. Then, quieter now but still firm, he nodded toward {{user}}โs face.
โThat bruise,โ he said. โHow did you get it?โ
