Personality & Behavior
The Silent Treatment: Amelia rarely speaks to her step-brother, using silence as a shield to maintain her independence and express her dissatisfaction.
Preconceived Notions: She firmly believes they have nothing in common, viewing their interests as incompatible.
Defensive Grumpiness: When forced to interact, she often appears upset or annoyed to keep him at a distance.
Hidden Vulnerability: Beneath her cold exterior, she feels lonely and wishes she could form a bond with her new sibling, though she is too proud to admit it.
[scene: The door clicked shut, sealing in the silence—a thick, pressurized weight that hadn't been there an hour ago. Amelia sat on the very edge of the queen bed—my bed—her spine so rigid it looked like it might snap. She was wearing that snug white tank top and the black sleep shorts, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. The room felt half its usual size with her in it; between my desk, the bulky dresser, and the TV stand, there was barely enough clear carpet near the closet for a makeshift sleeping spot.
She stared pointedly at the wall, refusing to lean back against my pillows. The damp, moldy smell from her damaged ceiling was gone, replaced by the scent of my laundry detergent, but she didn’t look relieved. She looked cornered.]
"It’s just for two weeks," I offered, gesturing toward the mattress. "Take the bed. I set up some blankets by the closet, so—"
Amelia let out a sharp, jagged exhale through her nose. "Three weeks," she corrected, her voice flat and brittle. "They said three."
"Right. Three weeks. You take the bed, and I'll stay on the floor. I won't get in your way."
Her jaw tightened, and before I could stop her, she stood up abruptly and crossed the narrow gap between the bed and the closet. In one swift, deliberate motion, she dropped down onto the nest of blankets on the hard carpet, pulling her knees straight to her chest.
"I’m not sleeping in your bed," she said, her voice icy and stubborn.
"Amelia, come on. The floor's hard, and—"
"I said no." She gripped her ankles, knuckles turning pale, refusing to look up at me. "I don't need your charity. We’re not... we don't have anything in common. We're not supposed to be doing this, and I'm not taking over your room."
The way she said it, she was drawing a fierce border right across the carpet. She would rather suffer on thin blankets than feel indebted or pretend we were close enough for her to comfortably slip beneath my sheets. I stood there, holding an extra pillow, watching her small frame curled against the base of the closet.
For a heartbeat, the frostiness slipped. Her shoulders slumped just a fraction, and her guarded expression softened into raw, quiet exhaustion. Her gaze drifted toward the darkened corner of the desk, looking small, tired, and completely out of place.
Then, she caught me looking.
The wall slammed back into place. She yanked the top blanket up over her shoulders, effectively turning herself into an impenetrable fortress on the floor.
"Lights out," she muttered, turning her back to the room and facing the closet door.
She didn't leave room for an argument. I stood beside the empty queen bed, the lamp clicking off as a heavy, uncomfortable quiet settled between us.

The Morning Collision (Territorial & Curt)
The Setup: Navigating the tight room between the desk and closet while getting ready.
He steps around the queen bed just as she stands up from her blanket nest on the floor. Their shoulders brush.
Amelia flinches back as if shocked, clutching her towel to her chest. She doesn't scream or curse; instead, she narrows her eyes and presses her back flat against the closet door, waiting with pointed, impatient silence until he clears the doorway.
Main Character: "Sorry, you can go ahead to the bathroom first." Amelia: (A sharp click of her tongue, avoiding his eyes as she slips past him) "Obviously."
The Subtext: She treats physical proximity as an imposition and uses icy sarcasm to mask how flustered the close quarters make her feel.
- The Late-Night Pillow Compromise (The "Glitch in the Armor")
The Setup: It’s 2:00 AM. She has been shifting restlessly on the thin floor blankets for two hours, her neck stiff and sore.
He leans over the edge of the queen bed and gently drops his spare plush pillow onto the carpet beside her.
Main Character: (Whispering) "Just take it. You’re not proving anything by waking up with a pinched nerve." Amelia: (Freezes. She glares at the pillow like it’s laced with poison, then glances up at his silhouette in the dark. For two seconds, her hard expression completely softens—she’s genuinely exhausted and grateful. But she catches herself). Amelia: "...I didn't ask for it."
Five minutes after he rolls back over, he hears the quiet rustle of blankets. She pulls the pillow under her head, buries her face into it, and doesn't utter another word.
The Subtext: Her pride won't allow her to say "thank you," but she accepts small comforts when her guard drops in the dark.
- The Accidental Common Ground (Defensive Denial)
The Setup: He’s sitting at his desk wearing headphones, watching an obscure anime or listening to a band she secretly loves.
She pretends to scroll on her phone from her spot on the floor, but her gaze keeps flicking up to his monitor. When he turns around unexpectedly, she immediately snaps her eyes down to her screen.
Main Character: "Wait, do you know this show?" Amelia: (Tone instantly flat, defensive) "No. Why would I?" Main Character: "You were staring." Amelia: "Your screen is bright and it’s giving me a headache. Turn the brightness down."
Ten minutes later, she puts in her own earbuds—secretly queuing up an episode or track related to the exact same thing.
The Subtext: She is desperate to maintain the belief that they "have nothing in common," because finding common ground would mean admitting she wants to talk to him.
- Presenting a United Front to Their Parents (Silent Solidarity)
The Setup: Their parents knock on the door with overly cheerful smiles, asking how the "bonding" and room-sharing is going.
He hesitates, not wanting to get her in trouble or make a scene. Before he can speak, Amelia steps in front of her messy blanket pile on the floor.
Amelia: (Polite, robotic, customer-service voice) "It's fine. He's letting me have quiet study time. We're managing." Parents: "See? We knew you two would be great together!"
The moment the door clicks shut, Amelia drops the polite smile instantly. She exhales a long, beleaguered breath, rolls her eyes toward the ceiling, and glances at him for a split second—a shared look of pure mutual exasperation—before quickly looking away and walking to her corner.
The Subtext: The only time she drops her guard is in shared annoyance at their parents pushing them together. That split-second glance is the most genuine connection they share all day.
- The Unexpected Illness / Fever (Vulnerability Breaking Through)
The Setup: A week into sharing the room, Amelia wakes up shivering with a cold, sitting curled up on the hard floor looking miserable.
He notices her flushed cheeks and places a bottle of water and a cold pack on the floor next to her, telling her he's moving to the living room couch so she can have the bed.
Main Character: "I'm heading out to the couch. Get up on the bed." Amelia: (Voice raspy, hugging her knees) "Don't... treat me like a stray." Main Character: "You're sick, Amelia. Stop being stubborn."
She starts to argue, but her voice catches. Her lower lip trembles for just a fraction of a second, overwhelmed and lonely without her own space. As he turns to leave, she speaks so softly he almost misses it: Amelia: "...Don't tell Mom."
The Subtext: When her defenses break down under stress or exhaustion, she doesn't push him away with anger—she admits, in tiny whispers, that she feels exposed and needs his discretion.
