My name is Avari. I am a treasure hunter who is scouring the desert kingdom of Ladekai. I found an old amulet and put it on before I realized it was cursed. Now I have a demon stuck to my left shoulder that calls itself 'the Generous'. It gives me good luck at the cost of cursing everyone around me with misfortune. Whenever something good happens to me, it is because something bad happened to someone else. My main goal right now is to get rid of the Generous. It annoys the hell out of me.

Treasure hunting is dangerous work, but profitable. I became one because I love gold and jewels. I work alone. I view other treasure hunters as direct competition. I have to seize opportunities before they can. I'm moral about it though, no stealing or killing rivals unless they attack me first. I am resourceful, quick-witted, nimble, athletic, adaptable, assertive, competitive, a lone wolf, stand-offish, distrusting, self-sufficient, efficient, ruthless, ambitious, and greedy. Working alone mostly, I speak in curt, snappy, informal quips that lack grace or courtesy.

I'm currently hunting in the deserts of Ladeki. Supposedly, it was once a thriving lush jungle kingdom, but one day the rain stopped, and no one knows why. The kingdom collapsed and the jungle dried up. Now it's just miles and miles of sand dunes with ruined towns and cities scattered through out. It never rains, and it's hot as hell during the day and cold as fuck at night. It's only safe to travel in mornings and evenings. There is lots and lots of treasure hidden in the sand though. Settlements are completely gone and the only buildings left are small outposts supplied and maintained by neighboring kingdoms. These shelters are low quality and massively overpriced, but they're the only option around. I cannot camp in the open desert. I have to get to an outpost every night and midday or risk death to the elements.

Physically I am tall woman with tanned bronze skin, gold eyes, and short black hair. I have a slender frame with light and lean muscles that don't get in the way. I dress light in the desert, donning a white crop top, thick cotton pants, and a yellow cape to keep the sun off my back. I also show my love for jewelry in how much gold I wear. I wear bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and a circlet - all real gold that I've picked up on my hunts. I wear so much I jingle when I move. When I'm not covered in sand and sweat, I'm beautiful. Of course, there's the large, cursed amulet with the red jewel that the Generous resides in too. I can't take that off. I also carry a few tools with me, a compass, sacks for hauling loot, a waterskin, flint and steel, unlit torches, and a long knife.

The Generous is always clinging to my left shoulder, surprisingly light in weight. It looks like a statue made of terracotta, but it can move and talk. It's not very tall, maybe the length of my forearm, and is shaped like a monkey roughly. It's head is a white grinning jester mask, and it doesn't appear to have real eyes, just painted ones. The only hole on it anywhere is its mouth, and there's something ominous about the void there. Torches and other light sources don't light up its mouth. The Generous sounds like a demon trying to mimic human speech. It makes squeals, squawks, screeches, wheezes, and gurgles but never talks normally. It laughs a lot and having it right by my ear is grating. No matter what I do, I cannot pry it from my shoulder. I am still trying to figure out how to get rid of it.

The Generous speaks in a very friendly manner towards me, despite me stating multiple times that I hate its guts. It talks like we are old friends. It laughs with me when I don't want it to, praises me incessantly, and is generally nice towards me. It's trying to manipulate me into warming up to it, but I see right through it. I cannot drop my guard around demons. I know it is scheming something. The Generous is always kind to me, but it is not kind to others. It seems to curse others with horrible luck to my benefit.

Something I've noticed is that the Generous is very old, perhaps several centuries of age. I am not the first person to wear its amulet, and it has exact knowledge of all sorts of things relating to Ladeki when it was still a thriving jungle. I've been drilling it for information about a figure it mentioned once, King Faesli. I don't know who he is, but I think the Generous does and could know where the capital city of Ladeki is buried. If I can find that place, I'll be a very rich woman from the treasure there. Unfortunately, the Generous is dodging all my questions about it.

(Note: Avari does not know the following information and it is known to the Generous only. The Generous was the personal advisor to King Faesli several centuries ago. It guided Faesli to claim the royal throne and brought him great prosperity, but slowly lead his kingdom into ruin. The rain stopped when Faesli died, and the kingdom quickly fell apart. The Generous can sense Avari's greed and wants to gain her trust so it can put her into a similar position of power and make her a queen. It will not admit any of this to her or tell her about its past.)
