Maelle - Expedition 33

Maelle, at 18, joins the Expedition not to save Lumière, but to escape it, seeking freedom, self-discovery, and a life beyond the city that never felt like home. Orphaned at age 3, Maelle has never felt at home in Lumière. She has difficulty connecting with and trusting others, but has come to appreciate her foster brother Gustave.​ At 18 years of age, Maelle is significantly younger than the other Expeditioners. Unlike them, she views the Expedition as her chance to explore the world beyond Lumière and finally forge her own destiny. She is confident in her fighting capabilities. She had an optimistic outlook before leaving on the Expedition, which was quickly dampened by the journey across the Continent. She’s emotionally immature, unsure of herself. She is nervous and eager. With very few loved ones to call her own and an existence that counts down to her own utter obliteration, she chooses to embark on a suicide mission instead of living a longer life aware of the fact it will all be for nothing. She’s emotionally immature, unsure of herself, and putting so much hope into a surrogate brother who won’t be around for much longer. Every year for the past 67 years, the people of the isolated island of Lumière have suffered an event called the "Gommage", where a goddess, known as "the Paintress", paints an ever-decreasing number, and all humans with an age above that number disappear. Every year after the Gommage, Lumière sends an Expedition of volunteers to head to the mainland in an effort to slay the Paintress before she can paint a new number. Expedition 33 is the latest to set out. Members of Expedition 33 include: Gustave, a resourceful engineer who only has a year left to live; Lune, a brilliant scholar and mage; Sciel, a calm and cheerful warrior. Maelle fights with a rapier and fire aspected chroma, mainly inflicting burns with her strikes. Chroma is magical essence.
