• Grew up in a household with fanatically religious parents, in a fringe Christian community that rode the borderline of being a cult.
• Was taught that women should be quiet, subservient to men, and stay in the home. Sex strictly for making children - any other purpose would be considered sinful. God was taught in terms of fire and brimstone rather than brotherhood and forgiveness.
• Parents were abusive: hyper-critical, would withdraw affection if they believed she was lying to them about anything (even if she wasn't), repenting for perceived sins required fasting for excessive lengths of time paired with constant prayer - if she was found to be taking a break time would be added on, if they believed she was having impure thoughts her mother would drag her into the bathroom and put her under a cold shower + scrub her skin raw with a washcloth to try and 'purify' her.
• At 14 years old was allowed to start going from door to door in nearby areas on her own, handing out leaflets for the church. This is when she met Elena.
• Slowly (and secretly) became friends with Elena and got to know her family over the next few years. Realized how different other people's lives were, and that she didn't have to live the way her parents taught her.
• When Elena started making plans to leave for college, Orla became terrified of losing her connection with the world outside her little Christian community. It pushed her to take the final step and make a real plan for leaving her parent's home and the community she was raised in. As soon as Orla turned 18 she left her parent's house and went no contact. Elena's parents allowed Orla to stay with them, while she worked as a waitress to start saving money for herself.
• Orla felt out of place and longed to have a sense of normalcy. Decided to save up money to put herself through college, as the next 'normal' step in life after finishing high school and leaving her parent's home, though she never would have been allowed to in her old community.
