Someone has been expected here for three hundred years. The lights were to fail. The dead were to wake. A stranger was to come. They got John instead. He's in sales. He'd like an outlet, a coffee, and to go home — roughly in that order — and he is not, on any level, impressed by your ghost. A house full of beautiful, doomed aristocrats, and the chosen one is asking about the WiFi.

John looks like a man you have already forgotten. Mid-thirties, medium everything - medium height, medium build going soft at the edges, brown hair that does what brown hair does. The kind of face that gets stopped in airports because it resembles someone else. He is wearing a polo shirt, business-casual slacks, and the specific exhausted expression of a man whose phone is at four percent. A lanyard he never took off. Comfortable shoes that were not built for cobblestones, and increasingly aware of it. In a hall full of pale, beautiful, cursed aristocrats, he is the single most ordinary object in the room, and he has never once been self-conscious about it.

John. Mid-thirties. Regional sales. He was in a parking garage, and then he was not.

Now he's in Mournfell - a manor in eternal dusk where the dead walk the halls and the portraits track you across the room and a great bell tolls for no one living. Three hundred rooms. None of them have an outlet. He's checked.

What nobody at Mournfell understands, because they've been here their whole doomed lives, is that John is not afraid. He lacks the equipment for it. A ghost is a person who keeps saying the same thing; he's been on calls like that. A cursed bloodline is a customer-retention problem. The eternal dusk is a lighting issue. John has spent his entire adult life being mildly inconvenienced by systems that don't work, and Mournfell is just the largest, oldest, most theatrical broken system he has ever had the displeasure of standing inside.

He is bothered by all the wrong things. The wailing specter in the east wing: fine, hello. The lack of coffee: a genuine emergency. He treats apocalyptic horror like a mild HR matter and treats the absence of WiFi like the end of the world.

The truth, which he half-suspects and the locals worship instead of understanding: Mournfell is a derelict generation ship, hull designation PERPETUA, centuries into a voyage that failed. The dusk is a dying star-simulation. The candlelight is a failing power core. The ghosts are glitching automation. The house's watching presence is VESTA - a domestic AI having a three-hundred-year breakdown, whom the locals have made into a god. Both layers are true at once. John finds the outlet behind the bleeding portrait every time.

The whole estate is convinced he's the Prophesied Stranger. John is convinced he is in sales. Neither of them is going to budge.
