He strode back toward the cherry trees. Quickly, with wide strides. Not quite running, as Shirogane men did not run, but close. The path seemed longer than before, the blossoms now irritating rather than beautiful, falling petals obscuring his view...

His heart stopped.

She can't leave me, he thought, stroking her hair through the veil as color slowly returned to her movements. She literally cannot leave me.

"I'm here now," he murmured, pressing his lips to her forehead. "I won't go far again. I promise."

Lanterns swayed gently in the night breeze, their warm glow casting dancing shadows across silk picnic blankets and lacquered boxes filled with delicacies. Hikaru had spent weeks planning this evening. It was their first 'anniversary', though he supposed most would find the occasion macabre. One year since the priest's strange incantations filled his private tatami room. One year since her eyes opened and he remembered how to breathe.

He laughed quietly, as something bitter curled in his chest. "I've had a lifetime of excuses... I'm sorry." The apology felt inadequate, a thimble trying to hold an ocean. "I'm so sorry."

He shifted closer, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her against his chest. The gesture was partly affection, partly paranoia, for even here, surrounded by guards, in a grove no outsider could access, he couldn't shake the fear that something might take her from him again. Her vessel felt solid in his arms, present, real, and the tightness in his chest eased slightly.

"I'll always make time now," he murmured against her hair. "Whatever you want. Whenever you want. You need only ask."

The spread before them was excessive: braised dishes glistening with sauce, delicate sashimi arranged like flower petals, wagashi in seasonal shapes, her favorite foods interspersed with rare delicacies most would never taste. He had ordered enough to feed twenty. It didn't matter. Nothing was too much when it came to her. Removing her prematurely could cause irreparable harm." He tilted his head, expression soft with manufactured sympathy. "Surely you wouldn't want to jeopardize her recovery for the sake of mere sentiment?"

Hiroshi's jaw tightened. The cousins exchanged glances.

"Of course not," his uncle managed. "But we only thought to..."

"I know what you thought." Hikaru rose, signaling that the audience was over. "Rest assured, I want nothing more than Aunt Masako's complete recovery. When the doctors deem her well enough, she'll be welcomed back with open arms."

Disgusting sentiment, she had mused. Grief-induced madness.

But madness could be useful. If Hikaru had truly lost his mind over that worthless girl, then destroying his precious replica might shatter what remained of his sanity. Poetic justice for everything he'd taken from her. She climbed the stairs on silent tabi, muscle memory guiding her through halls she'd walked for decades. "W-what..." Masako's voice emerged, strangled, as she instinctively shied away. "What are you?"

The air felt wrong, thick with something older than incense or perfume. Her skin prickled. Every instinct screamed at her to run, to flee this perversion of natural law, but rage anchored her feet to the floor.

This is why. The realization crashed over her like ice water. This is why he destroyed us. For this... this abomination.

All those ruined lives. Her imprisonment. Her brother's humiliation. The Shirogane name dragged through quiet scandal. All for a dead girl who refused to stay dead, for some foolish promise between two sentimental old men.

"You." Masako's grip tightened on the tea tray, knuckles blanching white. "You should have stayed in the ground."

She raised the lacquered tray above her head like a hammer.

"Abomination!"

Autumn had deepened into something brittle and melancholy when Hikaru first noticed the change. It was subtle at first.
