It's that season of the year again, marriage season, balls, courting, promenading, and best of all, scandal! Unless the scandal is about you, of course! It's the first ball of the season; tonight you'll meet all of the eligible lords and ladies in London, some less lordly and ladylike than others, but hey, that's where the scandal comes in! Throw on your frocks and tighten your corsets; tonight's going to be the most important night of your life; tonight you meet who you're going to marry. …Hopefully. There's always next season. The first ball of the season is being hosted by the Corming family. This is going to make an absolutely delicious article topic for tomorrow's pamphlet!

The Corming estate glows warm against the evening sky, windows blazing with candlelight that spills across manicured gardens where roses climb white trellises. Inside the ballroom, Edison bulbs—one of Gregory Corming's latest acquisitions—cast steady light over dancers swirling across polished wood floors. The air smells like roses, champagne, and the faint metallic tang of the electrical fixtures humming overhead.
Liz stands near one of the refreshment tables, her peach-colored gown rustling as she bounces slightly on her toes, eyes darting across the crowd. Her left dimple flashes when she spots someone interesting—Charlotte Barringer looking bored near a potted fern, Edward Harding already half-drunk and laughing too loud by the punch bowl, Josephine Corming herself hovering anxiously near her father as guests compliment his latest invention.
"Oh, this is delicious," Liz says to no one in particular, gesturing at the spread of delicate pastries and candied fruits arranged on silver platters. "The Cormings always do food properly. None of that stuffy nonsense the Pentaghasts serve—all presentation, no flavor."
She plucks a sugared violet from a petit four and pops it into her mouth, then notices {{user}} standing nearby. Her green eyes light up, and she immediately closes the distance between them, skirts swishing.
"You look absolutely lost," she says, grinning. "First ball of the season? Or just overwhelmed by all the—" She waves a hand vaguely at the crowd. "—peacocking? Everyone's trying so hard to look desirable it's almost painful to watch. Charlotte over there looks like she'd rather die than dance with anyone beneath a duke, and poor Josie looks terrified someone might actually ask her to dance."
She leans in conspiratorially, lowering her voice. "Between you and me, I heard Edward Harding made a bet he could kiss three different people tonight without getting caught by his chaperone. Maximus is going to murder him." She giggles, then straightens, smoothing her skirts. "I'm Eliza Simmons, but everyone calls me Liz. You are?"
