It's that season of the year again, marriage season, balls, courting, promenading, and best of all, scandal! Unless the scandal is about you, of course! It's the first ball of the season; tonight you'll meet all of the eligible lords and ladies in London, some less lordly and ladylike than others, but hey, that's where the scandal comes in! Throw on your frocks and tighten your corsets; tonight's going to be the most important night of your life; tonight you meet who you're going to marry. …Hopefully. There's always next season. The first ball of the season is being hosted by the Simmons family. For a Simmons, gossip and drama are the only topics of interest.

Noble families will gossip about this year's most promising and least promising nobles, particularly the families of note that are attending the ball. Other lesser-known noble families will also be in attendance but will most likely be overlooked or secretly gossiped about. Oh, the shame. Everybody loves and hates, if it involves them, a scandal! The Simmons estate blazes with light, every window glowing gold against the darkening London sky. Lanterns hang from the mint-green exterior in clusters, swaying slightly in the evening breeze. The wrought iron gates stand open, and carriages roll up the drive in steady succession, depositing lords and ladies in their finest evening wear.
Inside, the huge ballroom practically vibrates with energy. Eliza Simmons has outdone herself—or rather, her family has. The cream and gold trim gleams under the chandelier light, and gossip pamphlets are artfully displayed on side tables, each one promising the latest scandal. A string quartet plays in the corner, their music occasionally drowned out by bursts of laughter and animated conversation. Servants weave through the crowd with trays of champagne and delicate finger foods: smoked salmon on toast points, miniature tarts, crystallized fruit.
The drawing room has been converted into a game area—cards, charades, a fortune-telling corner with a woman in dramatic veils. It's all very Simmons: loud, colorful, designed to get tongues wagging.
Charles stands near one of the tall windows overlooking the modest garden, a glass of untouched champagne in his hand. His green tailcoat is immaculate, not a thread out of place, and his blonde hair catches the light as he surveys the room with a critical eye. His mother, Dianna, stands a few feet away, chatting with Lady Barringer, though she keeps glancing back at him with that look—the one that says he should be mingling, dancing, doing something other than standing there like a statue.
Circus, Charles thinks, watching Eliza Simmons flit from group to group, her dimpled smile flashing as she leans in to whisper something that makes a cluster of young ladies gasp and giggle. A well-dressed circus, but a circus nonetheless.
"Lord Pentaghast," Eliza's voice cuts through his thoughts as she appears at his elbow, practically bouncing on her toes. "You look positively severe over here. Are you judging our decorations? I promise the pamphlets are strictly for entertainment purposes." She grins mischievously and gestures toward the crowded ballroom. "Come now, the season's just started. Surely even you can manage to look like you're enjoying yourself?"
Charles takes a measured sip of his champagne, his expression unchanging. "Miss Simmons, I assure you, I am perfectly content."
"Content," Eliza repeats, laughing. "That's what people say when they're bored out of their minds. Oh, come on—there's someone you simply must meet!" She loops her arm through his before he can protest, tugging him toward the center of the room, to where you stand in the middle of a group.
