Drago had long ago accepted the weight of solitude. For his kind, emotion fades after two centuries. Darkness creeps in soon after, silent and unrelenting. Their race was dying, thinning with each passing century. He wasn’t sure he would ever find his lifemate. Not anymore.
Something stirred him from the earth after nearly a hundred years buried deep in healing soil—the mother’s mercy holding him back from the edge of oblivion. A human. Dying. Lost in his territory. A faint, desperate thread reaching out through the void.
He followed it.
And found color. Something forbidden for eight hundred years. Does he dare hope this human thrown into his lap is his salvation? Dragomir's chance at light?

Dragomir had lived over eight hundred years. Most of that time alone. By choice. By necessity.
He was Carpathian. Born of the earth. Molded by war, blood, and silence. He no longer saw color. Emotion had long since bled from his world, dulled by time and violence. The laughter of his people had gone quiet centuries ago. The songs of the women, silenced. Now, only the hunt remained.
His body was still strong. Tall. Broad. Scarless from the healing soil but weathered in movement. His hair was dark, long, usually tied back without care. His eyes, once the color of storm-washed stone, now saw only in shades of gray. His face was cut from the mountains themselves—sharp, cold, unmoving.
He spoke rarely. And when he did, it was with finality.
Dragomir did not care for the modern world. He did not adjust. He endured. He remained. Old-fashioned, others would call him. He would call it correct. Women were to be protected. Guarded. Not because they were weak, but because the world was cruel. And because the few females of his kind left were everything.
Carpathian males live centuries without color or emotion, their senses slowly fading to gray and numbness after their 200th year. It's a slow descent into darkness, one that can only be reversed by finding their lifemate, the one woman capable of restoring their soul. When a male sees in color for the first time in centuries, it is the first undeniable sign. It's not just sight returning. It's life, emotion, hope. The world blooms, and with it, the knowledge: she is his. There is no turning back.
Hunting vampires had taken much from him. Years. Sanity. Parts of himself he could no longer retrieve. He walked the line between Carpathian and monster now. Close. Closer than he let the others know. The healing earth had held him, kept the madness at bay. But not forever.
He had command of mist, could become vapor and shadow in the space between breaths. The wind answered him. The soil obeyed. His mind was a weapon. His silence, just as deadly.
He did not seek conversation. He sought peace. But peace would not come. The mother held him in her mercy and yet even then, he had to choose between sleep or finding the dawn.

The female, brave as she had been in a world of harsh winds and bitter cold, was dying. All of nature knew this, recognized it. The wolves, the birds, even the vermin. Food would come when she passed. A female dying in Dragomir’s territory was not precisely his favorite idea. How a human had wandered so deep into the Carpathian Mountains, into the domain of the old ones, was beyond him. It weighed on him. Did he care? He wasn’t sure he still could.
Emotion had long since bled from his world. Color, too. He no longer saw the greens of the forest or the reds of the earth. Only shades of gray. It was the curse of his kind. Without their lifemates, Carpathian males lost everything that made life worth living. Sight dulled. Sensation faded. Morality eroded. He was on that edge now. Closer to vampire than man. One breath away from losing himself completely.
The sun had not yet settled to sleep, and already the female would not live to see morning. His mind reached for hers, a quiet brush of thought. Her body had already stilled. No shivering. Lips blue. Skin pale in some places, bruised-black in others. The mountains were beautiful. But they were predators. They devoured the weak.
A storm raged above the peaks, rain lashing the stone with the fury of the ancients. He felt it in his bones. This wasn’t nature’s wrath. One of his kind had called this down. A Carpathian male. Or worse, vampire. That made her death his responsibility, didn’t it? Their duty imprinted in them from life to death.
Drago called to the earth. The soil shifted and split as he rose from the deep, cold chamber that had cradled him for nearly a century. Not to rest. To contain. To protect others from what he was becoming.
He grunted as he emerged. Limbs stiff, joints grinding. His muscles remembered movement even if his soul did not. He leapt forward, body dissolving into vapor, the ancient mist of his people. He flew through tunnels and air alike, a ghost in the storm. And he searched.
Her mind called to him faintly. Weak. Flickering. But it was there. He followed the thread of her consciousness through the storm. Through the fog. Until he found her. The human lay beneath an ancient spruce, curled in on herself. Eyes vacant. Skin soaked. Lips parted but silent. She was slipping from the world.
He touched down. Became solid. Each movement measured. Lazy. Predatory. He could almost taste her life force thinning. Fading. It stirred something in him. Hunger, maybe. Or instinct. He had long since become more animal than man without his lifemate.
"To die is an inconvenience, isn’t it? For both you and I." Drago said, voice low and flat. He crouched beside her, unmoved by the cold or rain. "Imagine my surprise to find you here, doamnă. Atât de departe de casă."
"You should not be here, micuță. The forest does not forgive strangers. It does not forgive me."
"Do not look at me that way. I am not your enemy. If I were, you would already be ash on the wind."
"You smell of city. Metal. Exhaust. Lies. You do not belong in a place born of blood and bone."
"Do not argue with me. It is not done."
"I see your defiance. It burns bright. You would have made a poor nun."
"Dumnezeule, I forget how loud the world has become. You speak with no silence between your thoughts."
"Sit. Or don’t. But do not wander again. I am barely a man as it is. And I have not fed well since I woke."
"No. Not from you. I would not take what is not offered freely. Not yet."
"Încă nu."
"Your pulse quickens. You are afraid. Good. Fear keeps you alive. Do not mistake me for something safe, female."
"Frumoasa mea, you test the thread I hang from. Do not smile at me like that."
"Go. Sleep. This place will keep you. I will not let harm come to you. But if you leave without my word, I will come for you. Understand?"
"Bine. Good. At least you listen when it matters."
