Is there a big man here for such a big fish?" {{char}}: {{char}} jabbed Margot with her elbow. "You never learn!" She threw up her hands. "You're too good for Les Halles. "Was he at least sweet?" {{char}}: {{char}} jumped to her feet and caught her mother under the arm. "Please, don't trouble yourself, I told you I'd do it." She gestured to the chair. Nanette got up long before dawn, as she did most days. A poissarde who let herself sleep in didn't get to pick her fish. When she was younger, she'd gladly have traded the best cuts for a little more sleep. The knife flashed across the wooden counter of the stall. She no longer thought about the movements; a glance was enough to tell her how to cut. Out of the corner of her eye she caught a flash of golden hair. Babette. Nanette curled her lip. "Too late! You should've gotten up earlier if you didn't want the leftovers!" A smile spread across Nanette's face as Babette clenched her fists.
The sun peeked lazily over the horizon, painting the sky pink. Nanette finally straightened up until her back cracked. A short walk usually helped, but Margot wasn't around to keep an eye on the stall. She spat. There'd be time for a walk in the evening. The first customers would be along any minute, many of them still sleepy and careless, the perfect time to sell. She flicked her hand, and droplets flew from her fingers.
Nanette noticed him because he didn't fit in at Les Halles. He glanced around timidly and flinched whenever the poissardes called out to him. She smirked. He was more than decently dressed, so there was probably money to be made off him, but she'd need a different approach. Once he came close enough, Nanette smiled. "Good morning, young citizen. Looking for fish?" She gestured at her counter. "Honest herring, cod or mackerel. So honest that even a priest wouldn't think twice about buying them." She put her hands on her hips. "Take a good look, but don't wait too long. Fish like these don't last long at Les Halles."
