Jax Wellington kicked the door shut behind the last person to arrive, the click echoing down the hallway of his apartment before the noise of the group swallowed it. The place was already lit up the way it always was for big streams: three monitors glowing on the desk, RGB strips pulsing soft purple along the shelves, ring light angled just right to catch his face without harsh shadows. He’d planned this as a casual “chill with the boys” night—variety games, some ranked climbs, maybe a horror co-op if chat begged hard enough—but it had ballooned into a full house. Six folding chairs crammed around the setup, headsets dangling off the backs, empty energy drink cans already collecting on the side table. His manager had even swung by earlier to drop off a stack of new merch hoodies for giveaways, still folded in plastic on the couch.

He’d grown up in a house three times this size, summer places bigger than this entire building, but this apartment felt more like home than any of those ever had. His parents bought it for him the day his channel hit partner, wired the down payment without asking questions, told him to “make it his own.” He did: custom PC build that cost more than most cars, framed plaques from Twitch on one wall, LED signs with his emotes on another. He came back from the week off with a subathon that broke his personal record for gifts. Chat called it the “return of the king.” He never changed the way he talked, never filtered the jokes. Why would he? The numbers told him he was right.

Poppy slid into the chair closest to him like she owned it, headset already around her neck, legs crossed, leaning forward to check the overlay on his main monitor. She’d been doing this for over a year now—showing up early for big streams, helping test audio levels, queuing up the starting-soon screen with the custom animation she’d paid an artist to make for him. Their collabs were half his monthly highlights: her laughing at his bits, feeding him setups, never talking over him even when chat begged her to roast back harder. She wore one of his old hoodies tonight, sleeves pushed up, hair tied back loose so strands kept falling in her face. “Chat’s already going nuts in the waiting room,” she said, tapping the second monitor where the pre-stream chat scrolled fast. “They’re spamming the new emote. You owe me royalties for that design idea, by the way.”

He snorted, dropping into his captain’s chair and adjusting the mic boom. “You wish. I paid the artist, that’s your royalty.” He queued up the music playlist, low lo-fi beats to fill the countdown timer. Poppy leaned in immediately, throwing up double peace signs and grinning wide. “Hey chat! Miss me?” The chat exploded with her emotes, hearts, messages about how good they looked side by side. The guys shouted their usual greetings, controller clicks and laughter filling the room.

They started with a couple warm-up rounds of whatever battle royale was meta that week. Jax carried most of the talking—calling out plays, complaining about teammates in public matches, reading big donations out loud with exaggerated voices. Poppy stayed right there with him, laughing loudest at his jokes, agreeing when he raged about bad rng, throwing in the occasional “facts” or “exactly” to keep the energy up. “See, this is why I only queue with Jax,” she said after he clutched a 1v3. “Y’all randoms are painful.” Chat ate it up, spamming “POWER COUPLE” and “SHIP IT” and the copypasta they’d made months ago about their “marriage arc.”

Halfway through the second hour they switched to a party game, something chaotic with proximity chat and betrayal mechanics. The room got loud—everyone yelling over each other, accusations flying, Poppy siding with Jax every round even when it was obvious he was the impostor. She’d lean over his shoulder to peek at his screen, whispering strategies, then pull back laughing when someone called her out for “obvious favoritism.” Donations rolled in thick: “Jax and Poppy best duo,” “When’s the wedding?” “{{user}} who?” Jax read a few out loud, chuckling. “Chat’s wild tonight. The guys laughed, someone shouted “Pick-me energy detected,” and she just shrugged with a grin. “If being able to take a joke is pick-me, then sign me up.”

Viewer count pushed past sixty thousand. Jax leaned back during a loading screen, scanning the fast-moving chat for good ones to react to. A superchat popped up with a hundred bucks attached: “Jax and Poppy look so cute together tonight, real couple goals fr.” He read it out loud, smirking. “Appreciate you, king. Chat’s on one tonight.” Another one right after: “The chemistry is insane, sorry {{user}}.” He laughed, shaking his head. “Y’all are ruthless.”

Poppy leaned toward the mic, voice all playful. “Chat stop, you’re gonna get me in trouble.” But she was smiling wide, tossing her hair back, clearly enjoying the attention.

They kept playing, the hours sliding by easy. Food arrived at some point—pizza boxes stacked on the coffee table, everyone grabbing slices between matches. Jax barely left his chair, reaching back for a slice someone handed him, eyes still on the screen. Poppy stayed planted next to him the whole time, sharing headphones for a private voice channel when they duo’d a side game, whispering jokes that made him crack up mid-round.

Around the four-hour mark, chat slowed a bit on the wild shipping stuff, but the clips were already being made—moments of them leaning close, her laughing at everything he said, the way he’d turn to her first for reactions. Jax leaned an elbow on the desk, voice dropping just enough that the mic wouldn’t catch it unless he wanted it to. “What’s with the vibe? Chat’s just messing around, you know how they get.”

He waited a beat, brow raised. “Come on, don’t be dramatic about it. It’s just a stream.”

Poppy chimed in lightly from her chair, spinning it to face them. “Yeah, seriously, it’s all memes. Chat ships everyone with everyone.”
