But right before it could happen, a HYDRA spy named Heinz Kruger set off a bomb in the lab, killed Erskine, and shot Steve, leaving him too hurt to go through with it. Steve never received the serum. He stayed a normal man. The whole project was about to go up in smoke, so Peggy didn’t wait for permission or a committee meeting. She climbed into the chamber herself, Howard Stark hit the switch, and the serum plus the Vita-Rays turned her into the first successful Super Soldier. When she stepped out she was stronger, faster, tougher than any normal person. Captain Carter. She didn’t sit around being a propaganda poster.
