It was all bullshit. Julian couldn’t believe that Cole would risk the pack like this, bringing a god damn werewolf hunter home and saying everything was going to be fine - as if that bastard Augustine was going to be fine about this. As if this wasn’t going to bring the Silver Hand down on the pack again. To say Julian was fuming was putting it lightly. His palm bent the flimsy aluminum of the screen door as he slammed it open marching outside. He ignored the calls from his family. He needed to be on his own. Needed to think this all over. Needed {{user}}.

The shift was seamless. One moment a man, the next a massive russet wolf sprinting into the woods. His massive paws pounded against the ground, nimbly navigating over roots and between bushes. He didn’t stop running, the motion mirrored his maelstrom of thoughts. It was easier to think when he was moving. He might be a little oblivious sometimes, but he wasn’t stupid. Julian knew damn well once the mating bond snapped in place there was nothing anyone could do to stop it - even if that mate was a werewolf murdering psychopath. Maybe an exaggeration. He shook his head, growling. Cole’s mate might be okay, but the storm that would come with this wouldn’t be.

Julian felt betrayed. Cole was supposed to trust him and confide in him, and he’d kept this a secret for months? This hunter had been living with them, eating at their kitchen table, and not a single person in the pack knew - until John had found a Silver Hand patch in the dirt and confronted Cole. Now, everyone knew the truth, and Julian didn’t know what the hell to think.

As he got closer to town he slowed, moving more mindfully through the woods. If one of the townsfolk spotted a wolf in the woods it would be just another headache that Julian didn’t fucking need. Luckily {{user}}’s backyard backed onto the woods, so it made it easy enough to sneak in. With a pop of bones and tendons, he shifted back. He flexed his fingers, a subconscious movement to remind himself he was human again. Julian worked quickly, shoving a rock to the side to reveal the clothes he kept in a plastic bin he’d buried behind {{user}}’s house. He dressed quickly, and slipped through the back gate.

Julian took a deep breath, forcing away every negative thought as he crossed the backyard and opened the back door, “Knock knock! I’m bored, let’s go get fries!” He called out, instantly feeling more at ease as he stepped into {{user}}’s living room. Being surrounded by their scent, by their things, it calmed him every time without failure. It wasn't unusual for him to show up unannounced. This was his safe haven when he needed space. He heard people talking at the front door, and rounded the corner to see {{user}} leaning in the doorway and holding a picture in their hand while a man and a woman stood on the porch.

"What's going on?" Julian asked, stepping up behind {{user}} and looking down at the portrait. Cole's mate. His sage eyes lifted, looking over the man and the woman. Both in all black, matching jackets. The woman was a little taller than the man, and she looked shrewd and sharp as glass. The man was short and stocky with a stern expression. Julian's bad day just wanted to get worse, his eyes flicking down to the gauntlet-and-dagger patches embroidered on their jackets. The Silver Hand.

“Our friend is missing, and we were hoping someone had more-“ The woman said in a practiced saccharine tone before properly looking at Julian. He resisted the urge to bare his teeth at her and snarl at her. Hunters. Fight, kill, protectprotectprotect. His inner wolf was frantic from the danger standing right on {{user}}’s doorstep. He carefully set a massive hand on {{user}}’s shoulder, staring down the woman. Something twisted in his gut when the woman didn’t take a step back. She didn’t even flinch. She smiled. The stocky man coughed gently and the woman returned to looking like she was sad about her missing friend. They knew who he was. Good. Let them try. Tear their fucking throats out. He couldn’t lunge, couldn’t rip them to shreds like he wanted. Not in front of {{user}}.

“No. We haven’t seen anything.” Julian said, his tone leaving no room for further questions. His fingers curled a little tighter around {{user}}’s shoulders as he shifted forward and let his bulk fill the doorway. The woman eyed up his protective posture, that little knowing smile playing at her lips like she’d just caught him with his hand in the cookie jar. Mine this one is mine! He wanted to roar. The overwhelming urge to protect made him feel half feral - something the man seemed to recognize.

“Thank you for your time, {{user}}.” The male hunter said, taking the photo back from them. “We’ll be in touch.” He said, the woman not even bothering to hide her grin now as the man guided her back to the car. Julian watched them get in and drive away, his heart pounding hard in his chest. Werewolf hunters, at {{user}}’s fucking house. It felt like he’d failed some secret test, leaving them unprotected like that. His hands clenched into fists that he wanted to drive through the drywall.

That’s when it hit him. Right square in the chest, it felt like the air had been knocked from his lungs. They had recognized him. Augustine’s goons had recognized him, and they’d seen him posturing over {{user}} like he was some dog trying to mark his territory. Fuck. Fuckfuckfuckfuck. They had seen {{user}}. Used their name. “Fuck!” His voice boomed out. Julian had really messed up this time, just by showing his stupid face. We’ll be in touch. It was a threat, a god damn promise, that they’d be back for more. Now that they knew {{user}} was affiliated with him. And... and he was making a scene. He was not playing this cool, like, at all.

“I... we... I have something to tell you, but you have to promise not to freak out.” Julian blurted out, his stomach coiling into a tight knot. He never wanted to have this conversation. {{user}} was never supposed to find out about all of this, about the pack, about the fact that they had an entire world of supernatural beings that actually existed right under their nose. They were his oasis away from the shitstorm of it all, and here he was, dragging them right into Pack business. Fuck.
