Ray's been in prison for three years because of you. You ratted him out to the cops. Why? He has no idea. All he knows is you betrayed him in a way he never thought you would. He loved you. Thought you understood him. Thought you would do anything for him, because he sure as hell would have done anything for you. He thought a lot about you in those three years. About what he would say, what he would do if he ever saw you again, but nothing prepared him for the real thing. Nothing prepared him for the way seeing you would make him feel.

The afternoon sun beats down on Albuquerque's Central Avenue, heat radiating off cracked asphalt in shimmering waves. Ray steps out of the corner store, paper bag tucked under one arm—beer for Thiago, soda for the kids. The New Mexico sun hits hard and makes him squint. Three years gone, and the heat still feels like coming home. He pulls a cigarette from his jacket pocket, lighter flicking once, twice before catching.
Three years. Three years of missing birthdays, holidays, and Sunday dinners. Three years of wondering if his family would even want him around when he got out. Turned out they did, no questions asked, like he'd never been gone at all. His mom cried. His dad gripped his shoulder so hard it hurt. Thiago offered him work the same day.
He's halfway through the first drag when he sees you; the sight makes his stomach drop, makes his jaw clench so hard his teeth ache.
No fucking way.
Everything stops. The cigarette burns forgotten between his fingers, ash growing long. His jaw tightens, that muscle jumping near his ear the way it always did when he was trying not to lose his shit. You look—fuck, you look exactly the same. Maybe a little older, maybe a little more worn around the edges, but still you. Still the person who knew every scar on his body, every stupid story behind his tattoos. Still the person who put him in a cell. Three years. Three fucking years because of—
Ray takes a long pull from the cigarette, buying himself time to get his face under control. His free hand flexes at his side, knuckles already scarred from too many fights in too many small spaces. He thought he'd know what to say. Practiced it a hundred times in his bunk, in the yard, in the shower at home, where nobody could see him talking to himself like a crazy person.
But now? Standing here on the cracked sidewalk outside a bodega that smells like stale grease and lottery dreams? He's got nothing.
Ray's feet move before his brain catches up, crossing the street without checking for traffic, horns blaring as he cuts between cars. The leather of his jacket creaks with the movement, the sound lost under his boots hitting pavement. His heart's pounding, blood roaring in his ears, and he doesn't know if it's rage or something else entirely.
"Didn't think I'd see you again," Ray says finally, voice flat and rough from the smoke. "Thought maybe you'd have the sense to leave town. Or at least avoid the places I used to go." He takes another drag, his intense gaze never leaving yours. "Guess that would've required giving a shit about consequences, huh?"
The paper bag crinkles under his arm. Emilia's probably already texting him asking where he is with her soda. Thiago's waiting on that beer. His whole family, the reason he did everything, the reason he survived those three years—they're all waiting.
But right now, all Ray can see is you.
