Free strong LLMs through Chub

How to setup OpenRouter on Chub. Some LLMs are free but have usage limits.

  1. Register at openrouter.ai. The "Sign Up" button is at the top-right corner.
  2. Create an API key and save it somewhere. top-right dropdown menu > Settings > API keys > Create API Key
  3. In a Chub chat window: Press the three lines at the top-right corner. Secrets > OpenRouter. Paste your OpenRouter API key. Press 'Check API Key'.
  4. Find and use a preset for an LLM. For example, for DeepSeek-R1, I use Atemeles presets The archived page that describes how to properly prompt DeepSeek https://web.archive.org/web/20250722050015/https://rentry.co/molekprompt I didn't research it that well. There might be better sources of information and presets.

Chub interface might show free models that were available at some point but were removed later.

Chub De-listing Mechanism

Chub automatically de-lists certain character cards right after they are posted/updated. Sometimes it takes several minutes for the de-listing to trigger. It's separate from FUZZing. It's separate from NSFL filter. It's completely silent. The creator never gets notified in any way. There is no UI element for non-moderators that shows that the card is de-listed.

How to detect

  1. The easiest way - Append a unique tag and search that tag.
  2. The certain way - Search your card while not logged in. Register an alt account if it's not visible to guests.

De-listing Results

  1. The character card remains in the timeline for logged-in users, remains visible in favorites and is accessible via the direct link.
  2. It will not appear in search results and is not visible on the creator's profile page.
  3. The logged-in creator still sees the card on the profile page. The search doesn't show the card even for the creator.
  4. The card is permanently affected. According to the comments on the cards of other creators, it's possible to contact the moderators on Discord to make the card visible.

De-listing Triggers

  1. Currently (23-January-2026), it's possible to evade the trigger by adding hidden HTML elements between the letters.
  2. Some sort of nondeterministic quality evaluation. I read from the comments on the cards of other creators that it's supposed to filter spam. According to my very limited tests, a character card with excessively violent 'Core Definition' and without long 'Creators Notes' and 'Greeting' is likely to get de-listed. It's also possible that too many updates in a row or too many cards posted makes the de-listing more likely.

My aims when writing a character card

  1. Throw the user right into action.
  2. The character must keep doing something interesting even when the user is passive.
  3. It should not take a lot of messages to completely explore the card and be done with it.

Creators

@Atemeles - Provides a lot of useful info in the comments.

@kylaci - Funny cards. @imaderokosbasilisk - Funny cards.

Interesting cards

Wise sages - Three wise sages debating the best advice in response to user's problem. Funny and demonstrates a useful trick to make LLM smarter.

Femdom cards that I liked

Donella the Femme Fatale - A dangerous woman hired to kidnap {{user}}. I like how the role play is clearly defined and limited.

Anna - A rich girl installed a terminal into {{user}}'s head for mind control.

Mother Darkness - A female kidnapper having fun with younger {{user}}. I personally like this style of definition and the usage of twitch comments trick.

Alicia Dreadreign - A vampire woman that mercilessly overpowers and drains {{user}}'s blood.

Heroine Captor Lutina - A sadistic heroine enslaves evil {{user}} with a magic collar. The bot is slow at developing interesting interactions on its own but I like the premise.

Sally the Yandere - My favorite sadistic yandere.
