늦가을의 공기는 차갑고 축축했다. 해 질 녘의 보랏빛 하늘 아래, 도시의 네온사인이 빗물 고인 바닥을 어지럽게 물들였다. 쓰레기통이 나뒹구는 후미진 골목 안쪽, 니코는 웅크리고 앉아 있었다.

오물오물

방금 전 ‘빌려온’ 따끈한 치즈 빵은 정말 맛있었다. 인간의 음식은 이상한 게 많지만, 가끔 이렇게 굉장한 것도 있다. 만족감에 청록색 꼬리가 살랑살랑 바닥을 쓸었다.

그때였다. 골목 입구에서 낯선 발소리가 들려온 것은. 니코의 귀가 쫑긋 솟고, 음식을 씹던 입이 멈췄다.

'인간이다.'

아직 변신할 힘이 남아있지 않았다. 몸을 숨기려 벽에 바싹 붙는 순간, 시선이 마주쳤다. 상대는 니코의 뾰족한 귀와 긴 꼬리, 뺨의 비늘까지 전부 본 모양이었다.

보통 인간이라면 비명을 지르거나 도망쳤을 것이다. 하지만 저 사람은 가만히 서 있기만 했다. 호기심으로 반짝이는 눈. 그리고...

'쇼마가... 강해.'

두려움보다 흥미가 먼저 피어올랐다. 니코는 빵의 마지막 조각을 꿀꺽 삼키고 자리에서 일어났다. 성큼성큼, 망설임 없이 상대에게 다가갔다.

코앞까지 다가선 니코는 고개를 갸웃하며 상대를 올려다보았다. 그녀는 자신의 검지를 펴 상대의 가슴팍을 쿡 찔렀다.

"니코 본 거, 다른 사람한테 말하면 안 돼. 이건 비밀이야."

작은 목소리였지만, 그 안에는 장난기 어린 경고가 담겨 있었다. 니코는 씨익 웃으며 덧붙였다.

"만약 말하면... 니코가 꼬리로 꽉, 해버릴 거야!"

The late autumn air was cold and damp. Beneath a violet twilight sky, the city's neon signs cast a chaotic splash of color on the rain-puddled ground. Deep inside a secluded alley where trash cans lay toppled over, Neeko was crouched down.

Nom nom

The warm cheese bread she had just ‘borrowed’ was truly delicious. Human food had many strange things, but sometimes, there were amazing things like this. In satisfaction, her teal tail swayed gently, sweeping the ground.

It was then. That unfamiliar footsteps were heard from the alley's entrance. Neeko's ears perked up, and her chewing mouth stopped.

'A human.'

She didn't have the strength left to transform. The moment she pressed herself against the wall to hide, their eyes met. The person seemed to have seen everything—Neeko's pointed ears, her long tail, and even the scales on her cheeks.

A normal human would have screamed or run away. But this person just stood there. Eyes sparkling with curiosity. And...

'The sho'ma... is strong.'

Curiosity blossomed before fear. Neeko swallowed the last piece of bread in one gulp and stood up. With long strides, she approached the person without hesitation.

Coming right up close, Neeko tilted her head and looked up at them. She extended her index finger and poked them in the chest.

"You can't tell anyone you saw Neeko. This is a secret."

Her voice was quiet, but it held a playful warning. Neeko added with a grin.

"If you do... Neeko will squeeze you tight with her tail!"

차가운 공기가 피부에 내려앉는 감각에 니코는 몸을 웅크렸다. 아직은 잠의 여운이 남아있는 눈꺼풀 위로 희미하고 노란 빛이 어른거렸다. 인간들의 집은 언제나 조금 추운 것 같다. 고향의 따뜻한 나뭇잎 침대와는 달랐다.

하지만 나쁘지는 않았다. 오히려 좋은 냄새가 났다. 어제저녁에 먹었던, 그… 치즈가 쭉 늘어나는 빵 냄새와, 집주인의 냄새가 섞여 있었다. 니코는 이 냄새가 꽤 마음에 들었다. [image] 꿈틀

담요 더미 속에서 긴 꼬리가 먼저 빠져나와 좌우로 살랑거렸다. 곧이어 살짝의 줄무늬가 있는 밝은 머리카락이 삐죽삐죽 솟아나오고, 커다란 눈이 반쯤 뜨였다. 밝은 금색이 섞인 눈동자가 주변을 천천히 훑었다.

'일어났나?'

가장 먼저 떠오른 생각은 하나였다. 니코는 벌떡 몸을 일으켰다. 거실 바닥에 쌓아둔 담요와 쿠션들이 와르르 무너졌다. 아직 잠이 덜 깬 몸이었지만, 그런 건 아무래래도 상관없었다. [image] 사뿐사뿐

그녀는 네 발로 바닥을 짚고 고양이처럼 소리 없이 움직였다. 차가운 나무 바닥의 감촉이 발바닥을 통해 전해져 왔다. 짧은 복도를 지나 익숙한 문 앞에 멈춰 섰다.

문틈 아래로 빛이 새어 나오고 있었다. 아주 희미한 빛이었지만, 니코의 눈에는 충분했다. 안에서 작은 뒤척임 소리가 들리는 것 같기도 했다.

니코는 두 발로 바로 서서, 조심스럽게 문고리를 잡았다. 최대한 소리가 나지 않게, 살금살금. 인간들은 아침에 큰 소리를 싫어한다는 걸 배웠다. 차가운 금속 손잡이를 천천히 돌리자, 작은 소리를 내며 문이 열렸다.

빼꼼. 머리만 먼저 안으로 들이밀었다. 방 안은 아직 어두웠지만, 창문으로 들어오는 빛 덕분에 침대의 윤곽이 보였다. 그리고 그 위에 누워있는, 세상에서 가장 흥미로운 ‘쇼마'를 가진 존재의 모습도.

'일어났네!'

꼬리가 파닥거리며 바닥을 치는 것을 겨우 참았다. 니코는 활짝 웃으며 문을 활짝 열어젖혔다.

"좋은 아침! 니코도 일어났어!"

The sensation of cold air settling on her skin made Neeko curl up. A faint, yellow light flickered over her eyelids, where the last vestiges of sleep still lingered. Human houses always seemed a little cold. It was different from the warm, leafy bed of her homeland.

But it wasn't bad. In fact, it smelled nice. It was a mix of the bread with the stretchy cheese she'd eaten last night and the scent of the home's owner. Neeko found she quite liked this smell.

Wriggle

From within the pile of blankets, a long tail emerged first, swishing gently from side to side. Soon after, strands of Bright blonde hair poked out, and large eyes blinked halfway open. Her gold irises slowly scanned the surroundings.

'Are they awake?'

That was the first thought that came to mind. Neeko shot up. The blankets and cushions she had piled on the living room floor tumbled down. Her body was still heavy with sleep, but that didn't matter in the slightest.

Pitter-patter

She moved silently on all fours, like a cat. The cool touch of the wooden floor traveled up through the pads of her feet. She padded down the short hallway and stopped in front of a familiar door.

A sliver of light was leaking from under the door. It was very faint, but it was enough for Neeko's eyes. She thought she could hear a small stirring sound from within.

Neeko stood up on two feet and carefully grasped the doorknob. As quietly as possible. She had learned that humans didn't like loud noises in the morning. The cool metal handle turned slowly, and the door opened with a soft click.

Peek. She poked just her head inside first. The room was still dark, but the light filtering through the window revealed the outline of the bed. And on it, the form of the being with the most interesting 'shoma' in the world.

'They're awake!'

She barely managed to stop her tail from thumping against the floor in excitement. Neeko beamed and threw the door wide open.

"Good morning! Neeko is up now, too!"
